It's June, which is close enough to the season to start preseason content, at least in my mind. We're bringing back one of my favorite series from last season, but this time it's a bit earlier in the summer. Here, we're looking at several conferences to predict one player per team as their team MVP. Let's look at the Big East 5A/6A Conference.

Editor's Note: Since we started these much later in the offseason, we rolled these into conference previews. We'll preview conferences in the future, but here, we're just focusing on team MVPs.

I haven't yet looked at any 5A schools, even though that's an intriguing class. So, here I'm breaking down one of the best 5A/6A classes in the state. Last year, the conference title race went into the last week of the season, and while 6A Northern Nash finished undefeated to win the conference, it was 5A Hunt that made the deepest playoff run. We'll get to some of that in a future preview. Here, we're focused on the plethora of returning talent.

Aycock Golden Falcons

[player_tooltip player_id='2226284' first='Caleb' last='Jackson'] | WR/DB

Aycock had a weird season last year in that the Golden Falcons simply didn't play many close games. In general, if they could match up physically, their speedy guys on the outside were free to win. Jackson is an impressive player with good size, length, and speed. If the Golden Flashes can get him the ball even slightly more this season, good things should happen.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='2104417' first='Jakarri' last='Johnson'] (DB/RB)

Fike Demons

[player_tooltip player_id='2142468' first='Sam' last='Finch'] | QB

When a roster has a top quarterback, it makes the decision fairly easy, regardless of what the rest of the team looks like. There's plenty of talent returning on this roster, and given the lack of returners on several other top teams in the Big East, this could be the year Fike makes a run. The top three receivers return, and if a now veteran defense can improve just a bit, the Demons will have a winning record in 2026.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1616207' first='Braylen' last='Loftin'] (WR), [player_tooltip player_id='1953798' first='Darryl' last='Loatman'] (WR), [player_tooltip player_id='2146056' first='Trevlan' last='Devaughan'] (TE/LB)

Hunt Warriors

[player_tooltip player_id='1970795' first='Doryan' last='Jones'] | RB

The Warriors lose arguably their top two players, one on each side of the ball, to transfer in 2026, but the rest of the roster is still stacked, especially defensively. While the defense returns five of its 11 leading tacklers, the offense is a bit less experienced. That makes Jones the easy pick, as the 1,800-yard rusher as a sophomore is the main weapon returning on that side of the ball. Expect him to get the ball early and often. If the secondary comes together around a strong front seven, the Warriors will be right in the thick of it next year.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1610537' first='Randy' last='James'] (LB/Edge), [player_tooltip player_id='1106602' first='Judah' last='Harris'] (Edge/LB)

Rocky Mount Gryphons

[player_tooltip player_id='2106448' first='Kayden' last='Durham'] | RB

There's some projection here for a well-coached Rocky Mount squad, as the Gryphons lose a ton of talent to graduation. There are a couple of really talented underclassmen on the roster, but we'll have to wait until the season to see if they can perform at a high level as their roles increase. Durham played well down the stretch, though he only played five varsity games. The four leading rushers in front of him graduate, though, so he'll be called upon a lot in 2026.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='2142467' first='Jason' last='Battle'] (QB)

Southern Nash Firebirds

[player_tooltip player_id='2226281' first='DJ' last='Baker'] | RB/LB

The Firebirds lose their top two running backs from last year to transfer, one within the conference. That means there's some pressure on Baker to step up. I've heard he's added some weight to his frame this offseason, and he's a powerful runner, even if he's not the biggest guy. Baker averaged over seven yards per carry, and if he can do that as his volume increases, the Firebirds will be just fine.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='2158958' first='Jeremiah' last='Battle'] (DB/WR), [player_tooltip player_id='2142469' first='Isaiah' last='Battle'] (QB)

Southern Wayne Saints

[player_tooltip player_id='2106463' first='Jhonte' last='King'] | WR/DB

A two-way player, King isn't the biggest guy, but he can fly. Southern Wayne lacks the size that some of the other teams in the physical Big East have, so they'll need to rely on speed to the edge. King can provide that, and he flashed excellent potential last season. Southern Wayne had a tough non-conference schedule before the Big East gauntlet, and I'm interested to see what they can do before hitting that brutal stretch this year.

Others Considered: Monte Kornegay (Ath.)

Northern Nash Knights

[player_tooltip player_id='618689' first='Myles' last='Eatmon'] | RB

There's a ton of talent on this Northern Nash team, one of the few in the conference not devastated by transfers and graduation. Freeman is the top prospect at the skill positions, but Northern Nash has the offensive line and the patience to impose its will, especially in conference. Eatmon slowed a bit down the stretch last season, so this year, I'm expecting some load management early before his volume ramps up down the stretch.

Others Considered: [player_tooltip player_id='1665255' first='Kamren' last='Freeman'] (WR), [player_tooltip player_id='1361375' first='Jessie' last='Wade'] (LB/RB)
