Our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp was last Friday, and we had over 70 athletes across multiple classes out to compete. I was impressed with the level of competition, especially with some of our younger players. In this piece, I'm breaking down some of our youngest athletes and looking at promising players from the 2029 and even 2030 classes.

Testing Winners

Typically, younger players struggle during the testing portion of camps, simply due to inexperience and lack of technique. But that wasn't the case for most of our 2029s on Friday night.

North Mecklenburg QB [player_tooltip player_id='2152133' first='Ashton' last='Jones'] and WR [player_tooltip player_id='2152134' first='Alec' last='Jones'] were impressive, with Ashton finishing atop the class in the Broad Jump (9'3") and 5-10-5 (4.32), and finishing just behind Alec in the 40 (4.63). Southeast Raleigh defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1163065' first='Exavier' last='Allen'] won the L-Drill (6.96) while ALA-Johnston's [player_tooltip player_id='2128796' first='Tyler' last='Worthington'] had a sub-4.7 40 and 4.32 5-10-5.

West Forsyth QB [player_tooltip player_id='1151256' first='Levi' last='Morales'] had a 4.53 shuttle, 7.06 L-Drill, and 9'3" broad jump. Mooresville receiver Coby Wise-Smith measured in at six feet with a 74-inch wingspan and 10" hands. Then, he was among the leaders in the 40 and Pro Shuttle.

The Time is Now For Young Quarterbacks

When we got into drill work, I was immediately impressed by a couple of guys I was familiar with, but who I didn't necessarily circle heading in. East Forsyth QB [player_tooltip player_id='2123450' first='Ahmad' last='Francis'] looked crisp as a passer, way more technically sound than I recall seeing from his limited freshman film. He's moving from a run-heavy scheme to a more balanced East Forsyth attack, and I think he could do some damage with his arm.

SouthLake Christian's [player_tooltip player_id='2145782' first='Christian' last='Waller'] made some nice throws, driving the ball without too much extra motion. Morales also showed some improvement with his throwing motion and accuracy. ALA-Johnston's Ronnie Jame Cattelona made a few solid throws and was always willing to be one of the first up for a drill.

2030 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1590808' first='Pierce' last='Giles'] isn't even a student at Providence High School yet, but I came away impressed. I invited him without really knowing much about him other than the fact that he was highly recommended by several coaches whom I respect. I caught myself mutliple times saying, "Whoa, nice throw by 46" (his camp number). He's got easy velocity, even at his size.

Skill Position Promise

A.L. Brown's [player_tooltip player_id='2070653' first='Jamaree' last='Russell'] made a couple of highlight-worthy plays as a receiver out of the backfield and in some one-on-one drills. We've heard he's one to know for the future. Hickory Grove Christian's [player_tooltip player_id='2155410' first='Liam' last='Watson'] showed some nice burst in testing that carried over to the drill portion. Cannon's [player_tooltip player_id='2092465' first='Jaiden' last='Colon'] grew into the camp, getting better as it went on and culminating with a few clean wins in one-on-ones.

The receivers showed plenty of promise. [player_tooltip player_id='2196432' first='David' last='Evans'] thrived where he was allowed to show his quickness. His mesurements were impressive. At 5'10," 180 pounds, he had a 76" wingspan and 10" hands, which show why he's able to play bigger than his size.

I'm familiar with a lot of the talent at West Stokes, but [player_tooltip player_id='2155238' first='Na'Zir' last='King-Chiles'] snuck up on me. He tested well, then made some really nice catches in one-on-ones.

[player_tooltip player_id='1657464' first='Cayden' last='Millsaps'] of South Caldwell showed some promise, too, with a nice broad jump and some nifty routes.

Trenches

Rolesville has plenty of young talent that might not see the field early, but [player_tooltip player_id='2199082' first='Caleb' last='Freeman'] may be an exception.

He measured in with a 76" wingspan and 10" hands before dropping a 5.01 40 and a 4.66 5-10-5, both excellent for a defensive lineman.

Wake Christian's [player_tooltip player_id='2005526' first='Maddox' last='Laws'] is one of the top 8-man players in the state and a dominant edge rusher. He'll obviously need to add a bit of weight before playing at the college level, but his 76" wingspan and 8'1" broad jump are promising. In drills, he looked right at home with guys from bigger schools.

Our top-ranked player in attendance, Northern Nash offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='865972' first='Jackson' last='Jenkins'] looked the part once again. You can tell his early technical advantage has only been enhanced by his work in the weight room, and he carries his 315 as well as anyone I've seen recently. He's a future Power Four recruit, and the first offer may come soon.

Linebackers and Defensive Backs

East Forsyth linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='2126975' first='Josiah' last='Werts'] was set to crack our rankings after coming on strong late in the season after debuting on varsity. Friday, he popped.

I didn't get as close a look at the linebackers as some of the other positions, and yet every time I looked over, it seemed like Werts was making a play.

ALA-Johnston linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='2166011' first='Nick' last='Massey'] moves well laterally, and that showed up in how he fared in drill work. He stayed square, balanced, and put himself in position to make plays.

Also See: All-Camp Team: Offense

Teammate Nana Takyi-Mensah has excellent length at defensive back and used that to make several plays in one-on-ones, matching speedier receivers well.

We'll finish with notes on two defensive backs from state powers.

Rolesville defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='2199082' first='Caleb' last='Freeman'] flashed a few times, showing solid footwork and ball skills. Hough's [player_tooltip player_id='2199010' first='King' last='Young'] has a 72" wingspan and tested near the top in all four speed and agility tests. I'm not sure what kind of impact either can have, given the depth in front of them, but whether they crack the rotation in two games or two years, both guys have plenty of talent.

We'll have plenty more to come from our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp this week, so follow along. We're updating rankings soon, so keep it locked in with Prep Redzone.
