What a wild 2025-26 high school basketball season in Minnesota! If you aren't aware, state playoffs just finished up, and we saw the likes of Chaska (4A), Totino-Grace (3A), Minnehaha Academy (AA), and Hills-Beaver Creek (A) walk away as state champions in what was one of the more electric playoffs in recent memory. If there's one thing the state of Minnesota does especially well, it's produce top-tier, multi-sport, football/basketball hybrids, and those same elite, multi-sport athletes stole the spotlight at this most recent state playoff run. [player_tooltip player_id='592119' first='Deron' last='Russell'] made a legit run at Mr. Basketball, Carter Cupito announced his 2030-backed name to the varsity masses under the brightest of lights, and familiar names from the gridiron were littered all over the four class All-Tournament teams from the fixtures, as well as the StarTribune All-Minnesota Basketball Team. Now that the dust has settled, we're back to completely focusing on the gridiron, and PRZMN wanted to make sure we highlight some of the best Minnesota-born multi-sport standouts on the gridiron and hardwood! PrepRedzone x PrepHoops combine! Enjoy.

--

A superstar multi-sporter in the 2028 class, Hopkins High School's QB and PG/CG [player_tooltip player_id='1651164' first='Tre' last='Moore'] is also blood-related to MN multi-sport royalty. His older brother [player_tooltip player_id='1522278' first='Jayden' last='Moore'], the Minnesota career assists record-holder as of this past season and a Mr. Basketball finalist who will hoop in college at North Dakota. The elder Moore held high-major football and basketball offers, and the younger Moore has similar multi-sport utility and top-end ability, though he plays QB instead of WR like his brother. The #5 ranked sophomore in the PrepHoops 2028 Rankings totald 11.8 PPG, 4.2 APG, and 4.2 RPG, and he helped lead Hopkins' to a Class 4A, Section 6 championship appearance and loss to Wayzata, 105-70.

Also a winner on the gridiron, Moore was an integral part of turning around a Hopkins program that was recently in the depths of 6A despair, and that leadership and competitiveness is far from overlooked by PRZMN. The DC from SDSU and assistant DB coach at NDSU checked in this winter to see the Hopkins product, who went 146-274 (53%) for 1,881 yards and 17 total TDs, with 122 rushes for 525 yards in 2025, and I'm sure the programs like Moore's big arm that can stretch the field vertically and win over the top against 6A DBs. The 5'11, gunslinger sees the field well and can get through his reads and progressions cleanly, as well as direct traffic and his threats when things break down and Moore can work outside of the pocket, and his smooth, intentional, twitchy footwork, small-area quickness, and overall scrambling ability inside and outside the pocket impress on tape as well. Moore displays touch and ball placement on his deep balls, a quick release, and accuracy to all three levels of the field. The sophomore also posted elite testing numbers at 612Q's Offensive Skills Showcase, and given the fact that two defensive coaches showed up to see Moore in person, there is a chance he may be looked at as a WR or DB at the next level, but it's still too early to comment officially. Either way, this dude is dynamic. What a sophomore year and budding career this young Moore has on his hands.

https://twitter.com/OJW_Scouting/status/2039782454429409741

Byron was ridiculously loaded last season. The 2026, 2027, and 2028 classes were stacked with scholarship talents across the board, but their best player may have been somewhat hidden and overshadowed in their sophomore class, though it's not hard to see the upside. [player_tooltip player_id='1653223' first='Keaton' last='Hansen'], the younger brother of 2025 Minnesota Gopher signee Colin Hansen - also a PRZMN Showcase standout - was a tall, lean, but athletic and explosive TE and occasional DE who is looking very much on the path to future B1G signee, just like his older brother. Like with many high-level Minnesotans, [player_tooltip player_id='1653223' first='Keaton' last='Hansen'] is a standout multi-sporter who comes in at #27 in the PrepHoops 2028 Rankings and runs with MN Fury in the AAU circuit. This past high school season, Hansen tallied 6.3 PPG, 1.0 RPG, .5 APG, helping Byron to an 11-16 record in 2025-26, but the gridirons of Southern Minnesota is where the younger Hansen really shines.

The verified athlete can win vertically as well as in contested catch situations, and PRZMN love the burst and acceleration from a dead stop, consistently running a good block fake in his junior highlights. Hansen boasts a huge catch radius and can reel in receptions fully extended thanks to his soft hands and coordination, and he owns real-deal, big-play ability from the TE position. Hansen demonstrates excellent contact balance and YAC ability for his age and size. The sophomore can step and work through weaker tackle attempts at his lower body while staying upright and runs with physicality and behind his pads, and I love the effort and ability to finish run blocks against varsity upperclassmen opponents. Will run his feet and put you flat on your butt if you aren't ready. As an inline TE or flexed out in the slot, Hansen got open and even scored on a variety of different routes in 2025, and he's a smooth, fluid athlete and mover. Some shake at the top of the route and long and dangerous after the catch and with ball in hand. Plus, the sophomore doubles as a bendy 5T with a great get-off who finds, identifies, and eliminates ball carriers in a blink and has significant room to fill in and add weight. The future is very bright for this young Byron Bear.

https://twitter.com/KeatonHansen13/status/1990580014069526838

Representing Maple Grove, we have a budding mulit-sport standout coming up through the deep and talented rosters of Maple Grove's football and basketball rosters. The #31 ranked sophomore in the PrepHoops 2028 Rankings has some significant JV stat-stuffing score lines from the winter, most of which were tweeted by our own Jared Martinson @JaredMartyMN. It's tough to get playing time at these massive 6A juggernauts, and Banwart fell behind in the depth chart on the gridiron this past fall, recording no varsity stats for MG despite being rostered on varsity, according to MNFootballHub. Not a lot to work with right now, but given the size, budding experience with the powerhouse Crimson, and amount of talent the Maple Grove football and basketball teams are losing to graduation in 2026 and we have a vacuum of playing time that Banwart will be eager to fill. Keep an eye out for this Crimson standout 2028!

https://twitter.com/benbanwart/status/1926729791887024426

As a St. Olaf graduate who spent more than his fair share of time in Northfield throughout my formative years, I couldn't be more excited about the Raiders' recent wealth of talent on the gridiron. A multi-signee recruiting pipeline to FCS heavyweight South Dakota State in Brookings has really put Northfield's football prospects in the spotlight, and the Raiders have some fun up-and-comers in the next two grad classes. One of the big names to know is multi-sport standout [player_tooltip player_id='1654624' first='Liam' last='Oakland'], the younger brother of one of those aforementioned SDSU signees and a noteworthy athlete on both the gridiron and hardwood.

Running with Northfield/MN Fury and ranked #43 in the PrepHoops 2028 Rankings, Oakland played significant minutes with a Northfield team that went 26-5 in 2025, qualifying for the state tournament for the first time since 1932 and losing to eventual champion Totino-Grace in the 3A semifinals before losing to Richfield for the 3A third place game. Oakland averaged 8.9 PPG, .407% FG percentage, 4.0 RPG, and 1.9 APG on a loaded Northfield basketball squad that really made some noise in the bigger school ranks off the Minnesota basketball scene. On the gridiron as a sophomore, Oakland posted 3 tackles and 1 catch for 8 yards and has only one game of public film on Hudl, which came against Rochester Mayo. In it, Oakland proved he was a good tackler, high effort player who was physical on both sides of the ball. If I had to guess, Oakland is more than likely leaning towards hoops at this point of career, but with his gigantic, SDSU-bound brother in his bloodlines, I'd keep an eye on this young buck from the 507 going forward in both sports.

https://twitter.com/liam11_oakland/status/2032623696100135211

One of the best skill players that Minnesota's 9man ranks has produced in the last half decade+, Hills-Beaver Creek has been a talent-factory as of late, and the good times are going to keep rolling into the 2028 class with 6'4, 195 lber. [player_tooltip player_id='1651465' first='Brodie' last='Metzger']. PRZMN has gotten an up-close-and-personal look at Metzger & co. at U.S. Bank Stadium the past couple of seasons, and the three-phase dynamo is nothing short of electric wherever he lines up and no matter how bright the spotlight. Oh yeah, and he can hoop. The #47 ranked sophomore in the PrepHoops 2028 Rankings, Metzger walked away from the 2025-26 state tournament with a ton of hardware, earning Class A All-Tournament team honors and a Class 1A state championship with a 30-3 record in 2025-26 and wins over Southland, Henning, and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in the state tournament. Metzger finished his sophomore season with a 13.5 PPG average, .559 FG %, 6.2 RPG, and 2.8 APG, adding to a decorated list of growing achievements that included a 9Man football All-State nod and All-Prep Bowl Team honors by PRZMN and the StarTribune.

KState came by Hills-Beaver Creek this offseason to check in on Metzger and some of his Patriot teammates, and you can see why, as the sophomore totaled 62 catches for 1,096 yards and 18 TDs, 51 rushes for 483 yards and 8 TDs, 57 tackles, 9 TFLs, 2 sacks, and 1 INT in HBC's undefeated 2025 9Man state championship run. Oh yeah, and he's posted a 11.63 100M, 6' high jump, and 19'9 long jump in his developing track career, but for now, we'll be breaking down his game on the gridiron.

Metzger reads, diagnoses, and closes with pace and physicality from his OLB/SS spot, and closes on ball carriers like he was shot out of a cannon and is a thumper at the contact point. Metzger is a straight-up mean tackler and is looking to hurt you when he comes into contact, and he's a long, massive, instinctive presence all over the field in his sophomore tape. The kid can do it all and is incredibly dynamic, showcasing video game-level elusiveness in space and with the ball in-hand, the ability to absolutely flatten opponents as a lead blocker, bend and explosiveness as a pass rusher, and excellent 1v1 tackling ability. Metzger can shut down quickly and concisely at the top of the route, displays strong hands and a big catch radius, and is twitchy after the catch, with game-changing acceleration, and effective stiff-arm, and the ability can cut on a dime. He sees and exploits space with the ball in-hand too well, and was straight up dominant last year as an underclassman. Hope to see him on the camp trail this summer, especially at the Gophers.

https://twitter.com/NSPNminnesota/status/2037254254209998862

A stock-rising sophomore in Minnesota's 2028 class, Rosemount's Finn Macken was an integral part of the Irish's big-time 2025 campaign and turnaround season on the gridiron, finishing 8-2 last fall. Macken is full of multi-sport utility, representing Rosemount on the hardwood as the #81 sophomore in PrepHoops 2028 Rankings, as well as on the track, and Macken even quadruples as an accomplished boxer and weightlifter for his age as well.

Although he didn't get any tick with Rosemount's varsity basketball team in 2025-26, and honestly, I'm not sure if he hooped at all, Macken was an All-District selection at QB in 2025 and has already knocked off a 275 lb. clean to really highlight some strength and explosiveness in the weight room. The lefty can generate notable velocity on throws to the first and second level of the field and can put some mustard on the pigskin off platform - with accuracy as well. Macken has some good reps showcasing his accuracy and ball placement ability downfield, but he's also a tall, smooth, and powerful ball carrier who can step, slip through, or bowl over tackle attempts at his lower and upper body, as well as finish runs for six once he gets out into space. Macken is physical, dare I say ferocious, ball carrier at times, and he has a great rep against Centennial where he brawls through 3-4 tackle attempts in a single carry. Macken is an effective read-option and option QB with a truck stick that can trample over 6A LBs and DBs and who also snatched some ankles and highlighted some footwork in the open field in his sophomore campaign. The future is bright with this underclassman Irishman.

https://twitter.com/Finn_Macken1/status/2038071669097439363

Johnny Moore is a premier football player in the 2028 football class in Minnesota, and the Monticello/Northstar Titans hooper also clocks in at #111 in PrepHoops 2028 Rankings. The sophomore played a big role in Monti's 22-6 season in 2025-26, averaging 10.0 PPG and earning All-Conference HM honors in basketball in as a sophomore. However, his best projection is on the gridiron, where he already looks like a D1-ready body, and the sophomore opens his tape with a dominating hit on a Brainerd WR over the middle to showcase some highlight-reel worthy physicality at the contact point that also makes one think that this Moore is bound for D1 ball.

Moore owns excellent ball skills and can go up and highpoint the football and win in 50/50 ball situations. Also has the body control to play back-shoulder throws perfectly, and he's a load of a 1v1 tackling assignment in space that can win with power or quickness in the open field, or both. Moore displays contact balance as a ball carrier and overall hits like a mack truck, which you can see in his rep that sent a Bemidji RB flying five feet and a near 180 degree rotation to highlight more physical dominance for a sophomore. Moore also put a hurtin' on a kickoff return front liner, sitting him down in car crash-esque fashion, and he will come downhill and close space with impressive pace. Plus, Moore owns ball skills and instincts in coverage, good quickness on his breaks, and a huge catch radius and can reel in passes while full extended. He's also a twitchy, explosive kick returner with eye-catching shake, can cut at top speed, gets would-be tacklers off-balance and out of position, wherein he can easily step and work through the tackle attempt thanks to his powerful lower body. There's so much power in his game. Power as a tackler, power as a ball carrier, and power as a football player. This Monti Magic 2028er is going to be a Top 10/15 kid in the update later this week/weekend.

https://twitter.com/JM_JohnnyMoore/status/2036922293281005912

A 2028 that PRZMN is absolutely itching to see get varsity reps and action in the 6A ranks, Anoka's [player_tooltip player_id='1651474' first='Alpha' last='Assibu'] is a strong multi-sport prospect in Minnesota's 2028 class who also clocks in at #117 in PrepHoops 2028 Rankings while running with Anoka and the MN Comets. Assibu aided Anoka's varsity hoops team to a 15-12 record in 2025-26 , averaging 6.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 1.9 APG a game, but we're very bullish on his projection as a football player into the next level.

A JV standout more than ready to break out in 2026, Assibu is a mobile QB with good touch downfield and push the ball vertically with accuracy and arm strength. That same noticeable arm strength shows up on a variety of throws, and he can also throw off-platform, and additionally displays jittery footwork in the open field and will run behind his pads and put a hurtin' on would-be tacklers at the contact point. Can't wait to see this kid on the camp trail this summer.

https://twitter.com/AssibuAlpha/status/2033033252437410218

--

What a wild 2025-26 high school basketball season in Minnesota! If you aren't aware, state playoffs just finished up, and we saw the likes of Chaska (4A), Totino-Grace (3A), Minnehaha Academy (AA), and Hills-Beaver Creek (A) walk away as state champions in what was one of the more electric playoffs in recent memory. If there's one thing the state of Minnesota does especially well, it's produce top-tier, multi-sport, football/basketball hybrids, and those same elite, multi-sport athletes stole the spotlight at this most recent state playoff run. Deron Russell Deron Russell Deron Russell 6'0" | 165 lbs | DB Waseca | 2026 State MN made a legit run at Mr. Enjoy.
