IOWA CITY - Waukee made the trip east on Friday night for a Class 5A first-round matchup with host Liberty High. Like the regular season when it was facing a gauntlet for a schedule, the Warriors battled hard before too often coming up short, this time a 34-20 defeat.

It was good to get a look at this group for the first time in 2025. It certainly boasted a roster filled with talented student-athletes.

Here's a closer look at some of them:

White was one of the prospects I was most looking forward to seeing when I pulled up for the Warriors' first-round playoff game at Liberty on Halloween night. A college basketball recruit as a skilled point guard, the senior has seen his football stock rise throughout the last two years. He brings the athleticism necessary for success on the hardwood to the gridiron. He ripped off a 72-yard touchdown run in this game on a simple sweep. White got to corner and hit another gear in the open field. He also had 13 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown entering Friday's contest and contributed 12.0 tackles, eight of which were solo. White averaged 36.3 yards and scored a TD on six kick returns. While he's still somewhat raw in football because of time dedicated to basketball, that's what should make White an even more attractive football recruit. A college can mold him into what they see being his best path positionally. He's worth a look by more programs.

Sometimes I shy away from writing about student-athletes who I've featured multiple times before. Other times, they do something that impresses you and deserves attention. Hine is committed to Army as an offensive lineman. He's a good one, as he showed again while lining up at left tackle during his team's first-round playoff game at Liberty on Halloween night. I'd seen him do that in person before. His skills and technique were improved, which showed he's working towards his college career. What impressed me the most about Hine, however, was his willingness and ability to also play defensive tackle. That's a difficult task at the 5A level, and Hine was effective doing it. His motor and desire fuel the success. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do on the next level.

Jeter has established himself as a three-phase contributor in the state's largest classification. I noticed it watching him in action last season and saw that again on Halloween night when Waukee traveled to Liberty for a 5A first-round playoff matchup. Jeter had logged a team-best 33 receptions heading into Friday's game. They were good for 304 yards. Twelve of his 21.0 total tackles were solo, and he added half a tackle for loss. Jeter was the team's most active kick returner as well. While not the biggest guy on the defense, Jeter brings physicality to the field and a willingness to stick his nose into the fray. He's a technically sound tackler and appears skilled as a receiver, too. Like other seniors on Waukee, Jeter appears to be a little under-recruited right now.

Bakker was sidelined with an injury when Waukee faced Liberty in the first round of the 2024 5A playoffs. I watched the Warriors miss him during that contest. Bakker was in the lineup when I saw his team in a first-round rematch with the Lightning on Halloween night. He also was up against it taking on an aggressive and fast defense applying pressure. Bakker fought hard with the rest of his team, hitting some important throws and picking up tough yards on the ground. Schools might like him as a signal caller, but he's best described as a good, tough football player. Keep an open mind positionally and focus on the traits. There's physicality, athleticism and quickness.

It was good to get another in-person look at Schipper after tracking his progress the last few years. He's continually improved his technique and has become a more consistent performer, as he showed again against Liberty in a 5A first-round playoff game on Halloween night. Schipper did his job much more often than not during a tough loss. The Northern Iowa commitment is athletic and strong already with a frame capable of adding mass without the loss of agility. Schipper could grow into a presence on the inside of the O-Line, but he has a skill set that might work at tackle, too. Either way, he's an ascending student-athlete with a chance to make an impact on the next level.

Nebo began to flash upside as a sophomore last season, when I saw Waukee take on Liberty in the first round of the 5A playoffs. When scouting the rematch on Halloween night, Nebo proved he'd made significant strides during the last year. He grew physically, played faster and looked more confident. It led to a team-best 44.5 tackles coming into the postseason. Twenty nine of the stops were solo and one was for loss. He also intercepted a pass. Nebo probably fits best as a flexible safety on the next level, where he can run with slot receivers and tight ends or get downhill in supporting the run. His frame still has room to fill out while adding strength and not losing the athleticism. He's a guy that should hit the college camp circuit in the summer.
