Battle of Class 4A Top 3 state title contenders in Minnesota's Week 6 was all Byron. Specifically, it was once again all [player_tooltip player_id='1104940' first='Carson' last='Heimer']. A leading candidate for the vaunted Mr. Football Award, Heimer popped off for 35 carries for 261 yards and 3 TDs while starting as a safety for the Bears' physical defense (Byron doesn't upload defensive stats) and leading the way for a strong win over one of 4A's top contenders. Tied 20-20 at halftime and at the end of the 3rd quarter, Byron came out firing in the 4th, first with a 2-yard Heimer TD carry and then with a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown by junior DB [player_tooltip player_id='1657620' first='Mateusz' last='Kawczynski'] to put the game away late. I wouldn't be surprised to see these two meeting again in November.

Eden Prairie 34, Moorhead 33

Fireworks in the Big School Class 6A ranks! Moorhead nearly pulled off a massive upset, as well as a glass-shattering "welcome to 6A" win over perennial contender and top talent producer Eden Prairie High School with a nail-biting 34-33 finish, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. The Spuds' tremendous Friday night effort was produced by 6'7 junior backup QB [player_tooltip player_id='1662721' first='Austin' last='Dryburgh'], who threw 21 completions on 28 attempts for 257 yards and 5 TD and 0 INTs thanks in large part to superstar 2027 wideout [player_tooltip player_id='1629849' first='David' last='Mack'], who caught 11 passes for 150 yards and 3 TDs against a stingy Eagles back-seven. Pretty crazy individual showing from a backup junior thrown in the 6A mix midseason, but Dryburgh seems to be settling in well as the starter, where he can showcase that massive arm and athletic upside. However, Eden Prairie was bale to narrowly squeak this one out despite losing 21-20 at half and 27-26 at the start of the 4th, surrendering a potential go-ahead TD with 24 seconds left in the game, but the 2pt conversion attempt from Dryburgh to Mack was unsuccessful and Eden Prairie earned a tight, hard-fought W thanks to their ever-imposing rushing attack. [player_tooltip player_id='1665895' first='Windlan' last='Hall'] is our Hero of the Game, a tough, explosive two-way starter who posted 12 rushes for 132 yards and 2 TDs while starting on the perimeter against the Spuds' excellent passing game.

Fun intracity 507 one-score finish out of Rochester and the Class 5A ranks. Mayo High School, led by 2025 season breakout star Isaac Peterson, scored 19 unanswered points to stun the Rockets and retain the Addington Jug, smothering any hope of RJM retaining the jug for the first time since 2015. It was also Mayo's sixth year in a row retaining the Addington Jug, and boy did the Spartans earn it, scoring three touchdowns in the final 7:15 in the ball game, capped by a Peterson to Gavin Werneburg pitch & catch in the corner of the endzone to give Mayo a one-point lead with just 16 seconds left. Prior to that, Mayo's Charlie Kipp picked off an errant Rockets pass inside his own 10-yard line, giving our Game Hero the perfect platform for what will remain as a legendary comeback. Mayo's 2025 season has been electric, to say the least!

Nothing like some free football to rile up the Friday night crowd in Eagan! After the Wildcats scored the game's opening touchdown in the first quarter, this slugfest of a 6A showdown remaining scoreless until what became a very tightly-contested 4th quarter of action up at Eagan High School last Friday. After Wildcat specialist Sawyer Haglund hit his first of two FGs to put Eagan up 10-0 with only one quarter of play left, Farmington came roaring back, using a 10-yard TD pass from senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1255911' first='Cade' last='Boyles'] to junior 6', 190 lb. WR Ty Beck, but a late 32-yard FG by Aidan Roche knotted the game up at 10, sending the 6A combatants into overtime, where Haglund once again proved his FG proficiency, as well as the ice in his veins, by nailing a 21-yard walk-off that he nor his teammates won't soon forget!

Litchfield has been one of my favorite teams to follow in 2025, as the Dragons, led by the electric senior stock riser Alexander Medina-Lizarraga, have been putting up stat-stuffing performances all season long. However, the Dragons ran into a brick wall that is Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, with the two squads coming together to create a barnburner of a Class AAA contest that was close all four quarters. Starting slow but ending explosively, this was a 7-3 ball game after the first (Litchfield lead), 21-21 tie game at half, and then 24-23 in favor of the home team Dragons, but the Tigers put their foot on the gas in the 4th, and that one-point difference at the end of the 3rd quarter ended up making a difference. Litchfield's [player_tooltip player_id='1633392' first='Anthony' last='Taylor'], a budding D1-potential prospect in the 2027 class, scored on a 13-yard scamper with 1:29 left, but the ensuing 2pt conversion was unsuccessful, and the Tigers walked away with a heckuva road win in Minnesota's Week 6.
One of the biggest upsets of MN's Week 6, 4-1 Rocori toppled Class 4A Top 5 undefeated Fergus Falls in a smack down in Cold Spring, where Rocori was having a Hall of Fame ceremony that included Golden Gophers legend Eric Decker, and 8-year NFL vet and 2005 grad.
A battle of two Class 5A promotions up the Big School ranks, Andover continues to knock off geographic rivals in 2025, as well as finish out tight victories, this time downing Rogers 34-31 with a familiar face and Game Hero leading the charge into the spotlight once again. Senior gunslinger [player_tooltip player_id='1491934' first='Joseph' last='Mapson'] continues to play like a potential Mr. Football Finalist, as the 180 lber., down 10 with 10 minutes left in the fourth, once again putting the team on his back as threw for a 21-yard TD to make the score 31-27 with 7:38 left in the game, and after the teams traded possessions, Mapson found pay dirt on a two-yard TD scamper with 3:47 left in the ball game, the ultimate game winner. Aidan Wiegert also had a big day for the Huskies, catching 8 passes for 183 yards and 1 TD in the win. I'm really bullish on this Andover squad in 2025. Thriving against 6A talent in their inaugural season up in the Big School ranks, the Huskies know how to finish out tight ball games and have some big wins under their belt.
Three big things stick out to me after seeing this 6A scoreline. #1: Champlin Park is a dark horse in the 6A race, and they know how to finish out tight ball games. #2: Anoka Is the best 0-6 team in the state, hands down. Also hard not to feel bad for the Tornadoes, who have lost their last three contests by a combined six points. #3: [player_tooltip player_id='1633474' first='Preston' last='Nelson'] is one of the season's biggest stock risers, and last Friday night was #1's show.

Our Class A #1 went down to the wire with a tough 1-4 Sleepy Eye United squad last Friday night in Week 6. Springfield, despite a roster stocked with talent in the 2026, 2027, and 2028 classes, were suffocated by the Storm's defense for the first three quarters of the ball game, finding themselves down 22-9 at the start of the fourth quarter after a Brayden Heiderscheidt TD run and ensuing 2pt conversion catch, but the defending Class A runner-up Tigers showed their grit and big-game experience in the following seven minutes. Stud 2027 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1633417' first='Parker' last='Kuehn'] found Leo Hovland for six, followed by a 2pt conversion by [player_tooltip player_id='1655354' first='Madden' last='Lendt'], and with only 1:04 left in the ball game monster 2027 jumbo ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1288305' first='Aiden' last='Moriarty'] tied the game up from 16-yards out.
Heavyweight Class 4A showdown went down at Southwest Minnesota State's game field in Minnesota's Week 6 between the hosting Marshall Tigers and the visiting Orono Spartans, who traveled quite the distance for this intraclass, but not intra-section, rivalry.
Alexandria 36, Bemidji 35

It's been a fun few years of being an Alexandria Cardinals football fan, and the Cards' faithful turned up on the winning end of a Week 6 thriller again Bemidji, 36-35, improving to 5-1 in the 2025 season. Alexandria Area went to battle with the Bemidji Lumberjacks in a 5A back-and-forth matchup that the Lumberjacks seemed to have slight control of for most of the game. Led by the explosiveness of 2026 5'11, 135 lber. [player_tooltip player_id='1903244' first='Rhys' last='Sneide'], who posted 5 rushes for 104 yards and 2 TDs in the loss, Bemidji led by 12 points going into the 4th after the two sides went back-and-forth with TDs until Bemidji went back-to-back on scores early in the third quarter. Sitting at a 35-23 deficit with one quarter of play remaining, 2025 PRZMN Breakout Player of the Midseason Talan Witt took control of the Cards' offense, spearheaded by a powerful rushing attack by 5'8, 180 lb. senior Brody Berg, who went for 25-200-2 TDs on Friday night. The senior NSIC basketball commit Witt found Game Hero Jackson Waltzing for a 15-yard pitch & catch to bring the score to a 35-29 line after the 2pt was unsuccessful, and Waltzing again found paydirt on a run later in the 4th, after which his defense stepped up to turn Bemidji over on downs. Completing the win in a contest that featured six lead changes and five turnover, as well as 949 yards of combined offense. I like both these teams going into the upcoming postseason.

Lakeville South 30, Edina 28

One of the most competitive 6A games of Week 6, Lakeville South held off a furious Edina comeback to move to 5-1 on the season and position themselves for a deep and well-seeded postseason run after MEA break. There's yet another standout "Dean" at Lakeville South, as 2027 Griffin Dean follows in the footsteps of his now-Sioux Falls gunslinging brothers, and he got the scoring off to a hot start with the games opening touchdown 5:51 into the 1st. 2025 TD-machine [player_tooltip player_id='482343' first='Nic' last='Swanson'] made the score 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter, but Edina's explosive offense had an answer, as future Chicago Blackhawk [player_tooltip player_id='592125' first='Mason' last='West'] found stud RB [player_tooltip player_id='923840' first='Chase' last='Bjorgaard'] for back-to-back TD throws, and going into the half we sat at a 14-14 ball game. The Cougars scored on a FG in the 3rd, but the 4th quarter was when the fireworks popped off, as Dean scored with a little less than eight minutes left in the 4th, Edina answered three minutes later, and then Game Hero Myles Krinkie intercepted West and returned the pick for a TD, which managed to be the hold off the Hornets late attempt at a W, as West found Jamestown commit [player_tooltip player_id='212361' first='Jabari' last='Strader'] on a 30-yard score with 50 seconds left. Close, but no cigar.

Honorable Mention: Terynce Wheeler (Lakeville South) 2026. K. 6'2, 175 lbs. - 3/4 on PATs and kicked a 23-yard FG in the 3rd quarter that ended up being the crucial score of the contest.

He's been unstoppable so far this season. However, Breck pulled off the W, and although there isn't any information available online regarding who and how the Mustangs pulled off the victory, the Section 4AAA contender and peer move to 5-1 on the season with a big matchup against 6-0 St. Croix Lutheran coming on October 10th.
Mankato East 22, Waconia 20 - Only publicly available information from this one was behind a paywall, but I do know that the Cougars, who were bouncing off a big road loss to Chanhassen, were down early but rallied back and finished out the one-point final. Each team scored 7 in the first, 0 in the third, and 8 in the fourth, but a 7-6 point difference in the second quarter ended up making the difference. Junior 5'10, 190 lb.
