The current top 2 prospects in WV for the 2028 class reside in the city of Morgantown, and each showcased why they're so highly thought of in week one. 2028 Morgantown QB/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='923337' first='Maddox' last='Twigg'] broke the game open in the first quarter with an electric 67-yard scramble for a touchdown as he wove through the Parkersburg defense. The young standout also got it done with his arm during the Mohigans' 44-7 opening night victory, completing 10/15 passes for 226 yards and two more scores to add to his 76 rushing yards.

Our #2 prospect in the 2028 class, University ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1292038' first='Brody' last='Kehler'], and cross-town rival of Twigg had his own special opening night performance against Musselman. Kehler electrified with 189 all-purpose yards and 5 total touchdowns in the 40-21 win. He showcased his ATH tag in the rankings with his versatility in how he affected the game, getting it done in the running and passing game, and a 65-yard pick 6 on defense. D1 programs need to get in on his recruitment sooner rather than later.

[player_tooltip player_id='923337' first='Maddox' last='Twigg']'s top target in week one of the 2025 season was 2026 WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1605281' first='Jayden' last='Smalls']. He was a big play waiting to happen any time that he touched the ball with a 45 yards per reception average on 4 catches for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns. We project Smalls as a defensive back at the next level, but he'll be a key piece to their offensive success this season as they open up the passing game more and utilize his speed and quickness on go balls and screen passes.

2027 Oak Hill WR/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1306758' first='Carson' last='Treadway'] is poised to have his breakout year after showing flashes of high-level potential over the past two years. Treadway will be utilized in the backfield this season, as well as his continued presence out wide. In a tough week one victory over Nicholas County, Treadway had 7 carries for 77 yards, 2 receptions for 80 yards, and scored a touchdown for the Red Devils. His combination of size and speed will force defenses to cover the entire field and key on him in a multitude of ways.

Riverside had a hard-fought loss in week one against a good Greenbrier East team, and 2027 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1155320' first='Tavion' last='Woods'] kept the Warriors in the game. He showcased his athletic versatility on both sides of the ball, totaling 123 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense to pair with his 17 tackles, 4 TFLs, and two takeaways on defense. Woods was a heat seeker on defense, playing inside and outside linebacker this season, and did an excellent job reading and reacting.

Woodrow Wilson needed someone to step up at running back this season after graduating most of their rushing production from last season, and 2028 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1856641' first='Gage' last='Burdette'] answered that call in a big way on Friday night. Burdette could've easily been selfish after a QB competition this summer saw him second on the depth chart, but he put the team first and moved next to his running mate in the Flying Eagles' backfield. He finished the game with 180 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries and appears to have solidified that position this year.

Burdette's running mate in the battle for QB1 of Woodrow Wilson this season, also had a great 2025 debut in 2027 QB [player_tooltip player_id='897526' first='Gage' last='Price']. We wanted to see Price elevate his game as a junior and take a step forward from his sophomore year, and he did just that and more in game one. Price threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns while adding 35 yards on the ground. He has some excellent targets to spread the ball to, but Price clearly has improved from his up-and-down sophomore campaign and should provide Woodrow Wilson more balance with their offense this season.

One of those top targets in the Woodrow Wilson passing game to know this year is 2026 WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1426802' first='Preston' last='Clary']. We expected big things from Clary this season when we made him a stock riser in the rankings after seeing him in person this summer, and he proved why in week one. He totaled 130 yards and 2 touchdowns on the night while doubling as a standout on defense for a great opening night performance for the Flying Eagles.

The future of West Virginia high school football at running back will be 2029 George Washington RB [player_tooltip player_id='1826125' first='Jaden' last='Black']. He broke all of Ryan Switzer's records at John Adams Middle School and is clearly going to be a headache for defenses for four years. His coaches had no problem letting Black be the bellcow in his first high school game, as he carried the ball 32 times for 114 yards and scored three total touchdowns on the night against a stout Spring Valley defensive front, adding one in the receiving game as well. The freshman phenom scored all three of the Patriots' touchdowns, and they're clearly building their offense around the young star.

2026 University LB [player_tooltip player_id='1112752' first='Marcos' last='Kniska'] proved why we consider him the top linebacker prospect in his class in the Hawks' opening week win over Musselman. Kniska picked off two Applemen passes and totaled 12 tackles and 3 QB hurries in the victory. "Agent Zero" may be the best read and reactor in the state of West Virginia, and he displayed that trait in both pass coverage and run defense in week one. He's a D1 LB prospect in our eyes and seemingly still goes overlooked in the state as one of the best defenders.
