The Carl Albert Titans came into the 2024 football season as heavy favorites after capturing back to back state championships in 2022 and 2023. Despite losing some really good talent to graduation and transfers, the Titans were still loaded and it didn't take long to figure out that this 2024 team had the potential to be historically good. It started in non-district play as they shut out Midwest City and Lawton Eisenhower in the first two games and then did it again to Stillwater in week three, winning 30-0. The Titans would begin the season with five consecutive shutouts, giving up their first points to Noble in week six. The Titans would absolutely steamroll their way to a 10-0 regular season and another district championship. The closest district contest was a 29-0 win over Guthrie in week nine. All in all, they would shut out seven of their ten regular season opponents. The defense would continue their dominance in the playoffs. They would shut out Midwest City in the first round. And then they rolled over Claremore in the quarterfinals before a semifinal showdown with Del City, in a rematch of the 2023 title game. Carl Albert punched their return trip to Edmond with a 28-7 win over the Eagles. That 21-point victory would end up being their closest game all year. In the state title game, they would face district rival Guthrie. They beat the Blue Jays 30-6 to capture their third consecutive state championship and made more history along the way. They won their 19th state title in school history and that put them in a tie with Ada for the most state championships in state history. Not to mention, they now head into the 2025 football season with a 39-game winning streak, which is one win away from tying their longest win streak in school history.

2025 OUTLOOK

The target on Carl Albert is as big as it's ever been but the Titans are coming into 2025 with the same expectation. State championship. However, the Titans will look significantly different from the teams that we've watched terrorize Class 5A over the last few seasons. First on defense, Carl Albert brings back just four starters from that unit that was historically good last season. But the bad news for the rest of Class 5A is that all four starters are from the defensive line. And that was one of the more dominant defensive lines in the state last season. They'll have new names throughout the rest of the defense but just because they're new names doesn't mean they can't get the job done. They will still have plenty of talent on that side of the ball. Offensively, Carl Albert will bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. They need new guys to step up in the skill departments but similar to the defense, the strength will come on the line of scrimmage. Almost everyone is back on the offensive line and a dynamic running back that appears to be ready to take the next step. Throughout the spring and summer, the Titans have had two quarterbacks battling for the starting job. But the Carl Albert coaches are confident that whoever gets that job is going to be ready to go in September. And let's face it, even though they might be new names, this is Carl Albert and the Titans are never lacking playmakers at running back or wide receiver. In the last two seasons, it felt like it wasn't a question of whether or not Carl Albert would win every game but it was how much they would win by. Now, as we inch closer to the start of the season, it feels like Class 5A is more wide open than we've seen over the last few years. But make no mistake about it. Class 5A is still owned by Carl Albert and until someone knocks off the king, this is still Titan territory.

One of the biggest questions we have about Carl Albert is how do they replace the production and leadership of linebacker Caden Davis in the middle of their defense. If this spring was any indication, they might have already answered that question. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1680079' first='Beau' last='Davis'] could be the next standout linebacker in the middle of the Carl Albert defense. Based on what we saw from May, Davis definitely looks the part and when he got on the field last season, he was very productive. Now, Caden became the school's all time leading tackler so those are big shoes to fill. But the drop off doesn't appear to be as significant as we thought it could be. Beau has already earned a handful of D1 offers.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that Carl Albert might have found their next star running back and let's face it, there are few programs that consistently produce running backs quite like the Titans. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='693905' first='Delijah' last='Matthews'] has all the tools to be that guy at the running back position. He finished last season with nearly 400 yards and a handful of touchdowns but he was lower on the depth chart. Now, we anticipate him being the workhorse of the Carl Albert offense. And while they are figuring things out at quarterback, Matthews could benefit in a big way early on. He continues to get better and better every time we see him and is turning into one of the state's best RBs in the ‘27 class.

The Titans need to find new playmakers at the wide receiver position after losing almost all of their production from last season. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1694441' first='Jacson' last='Webster'] could be one of the guys that steps into a much larger role this fall. If last year was any indication, Webster looks like a guy that could see his production explode this season. He only had six receptions last year in limited playing time. Four of those receptions went for touchdowns. Now let's face it, if he ends up catching 50 passes this season, he won't be scoring on over 60 percent of those passes but he's shown the ability to be a big play guy. He's already earned his first offer this offseason.

Carl Albert defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1539931' first='Lebron' last='Royal'] was one of the breakout stars from the 2024 football season. And it didn't take long for Royal to let everyone know that he was the real deal. Early on in the season, Royal would consistently dominate opponents along the line of scrimmage. Whether we watched him on film or in person, he consistently stood out as one of the best defenders on a defense that was stacked. Royal would finish the season with over 100 tackles and ten sacks. He earned All State 2nd Team honors and will come into the 2025 season as one of the best defensive linemen in the state. We're looking forward to seeing the encore.

If you're looking for the next two-way breakout star for Carl Albert, we think we might have found the guy. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1680084' first='Makauri' last='Johnson'] checks just about every box necessary when it comes to the eye test. We caught Johnson in person during the spring and we immediately started asking questions. So did the college coaches in attendance. Carl Albert's coaches believe the ceiling is higher for Johnson on defense. But there's no doubt that he has the potential to be a breakout star for the Titans on both sides of the ball. Johnson has good size, athleticism and just needs the opportunity for more playing time to put some solid film out there. This could be a big season for Johnson.

Senior offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1701284' first='Thomas' last='Welch'] is arguably the top offensive lineman coming back on the Carl Albert line of scrimmage. Last season, Welch had a terrific junior season, starting for the Titans at left tackle. This season, we expect Welch to be the anchor of an offensive line that will set the tone for this relatively young Carl Albert offense. The Titans will have a new quarterback and Welch and the rest of the offensive line will definitely be a key part of their success, especially early on in the season. Last year, Welch was one of the team's leaders with 47 pancakes on the season. He also saw some limited playing time on the defensive side of the ball.

Sept. 5th - AT Midwest City
- The 2025 football season kicks off with a little Mid-Del rivalry as Carl Albert goes on the road to Midwest City. These two teams met twice last season. Carl Albert won the regular season meeting and the playoff rematch by a combined 105 points. The Bombers will have a first year head coach in 2025.
Sept. 12th - Lawton Eisenhower
- These two teams were district opponents from 2016-2023 but Lawton Eisenhower is now in Class 6A-2 so the 2024 meeting was their first in non-district play. This is another series that has been very friendly to Carl Albert. They won 70-0 last season and have won nine straight in the last decade.
Sept. 19th - Stillwater
- Carl Albert wraps up their non-district slate at home, against Stillwater. These two met for the first time last season, with Carl Albert prevailing 30-0. This was their third straight shutout to start the 2024 season and at that point, we knew this defense was special. This year's match-up features two serious title contenders.
Sept. 26th - Western Heights
- District play will open up for the Titans in week four with a home game against Western Heights. The Jets became a new district opponent for Carl Albert a year ago. It was another shutout victory for the Titans. They beat Western Heights 63-0 last season.
Oct. 3rd - AT El Reno
- After three straight home games, Carl Albert will go back on the road and face El Reno in week five. The Titans beat the Indians 70-0 last season and that was tied for their biggest win of the year. Carl Albert hasn't lost to El Reno in the last two decades and all wins have been by double digits.
Oct. 10th - Noble
- The second half of the regular season will start with a week six match-up against Noble. These two teams became district opponents for the first time in over a decade last season. Carl Albert won 54-7 in last year's meeting. Prior to that, the Titans hadn't met Noble since 2011, when they were consistent district foes.
Oct. 16th - AT John Marshall
- Carl Albert will make the short trip to OKC to square off with John Marshall in week seven. The Bears became new district opponents for the Titans last season. Carl Albert won 58-0. Prior to that, these two teams hadn't met since 2007. John Marshall has spent the majority of the last 15 years as a 3A program.
Oct. 24th - AT Lawton
- Lawton dropped down to Class 5A last season and was another new district opponent for the Titans. These two teams met twice in the last decade but both meetings (2016 and 2017) came in non-district play. The Titans rolled to a 62-12 victory last season but the Wolverines could be improved this fall.
Oct. 31st - Guthrie
- The district title will more than likely be on the line here when Carl Albert hosts Guthrie in week nine. These two teams met twice last season, with Carl Albert getting state title #19 at the expense of the Blue Jays. The Titans have won nine straight in this series with the Blue Jays.
Nov. 7th - AT Altus
- The Titans will wrap up the regular season in southwestern Oklahoma. They face Altus in week ten. The Bulldogs were another new district opponent for Carl Albert a year ago. Last season, they beat the Bulldogs 52-7. Prior to that, they hadn't met since the 2016 playoffs.

We're recycling one of our absolute favorite stats and overall fun facts in Oklahoma high school football and specifically when it comes to sustained and prolonged championship success. Bixby has been to 11 consecutive state championship games. Shattuck has their state-record 93-game winning streak. But Carl Albert has been the state's ultimate model for that sustained and prolonged championship success in Oklahoma and it's not even close. With last year's state title, the Titans are now tied with Ada for the most state championships in state history with 19. But what is the most impressive part of their championship story is the fact they've never had anything close to a championship drought since they won their first gold ball in 1989. They won five straight from 1997-2001 and then eight titles in the last nine seasons. But here's the stat. The senior class on Carl Albert's 1988 football team (technically the class of 1989) was the last senior class that did not win a state championship during their four years of high school. It's been nearly four decades and the Titans have won at least one (and plenty of times, several more than one) championship during any four-year stretch. It's pretty remarkable when you put it in those terms and we'll probably use this fact every single year, until Carl Albert goes four years without a state championship. But it feels like we're a long way away from that happening.
