On Tuesday, June 3, 2025 I was personally invited back for the third consecutive year by Fairleigh Dickinson University Head Football Coach Anthony Van Curen to cover his Football Mega Camp. With many other universities now following suit with mega camps of their own, Van Curen's is the O.G. in the area and, quite frankly, everyone is just biting off his style. However, at this point the term “mega” is probably an understatement to describe his event.

In what I would consider more of a celebration of the game, between the 560+ prospects registered, 100+ college coaches watching, clinicians, parents, and high school staffs there were literally around 1000 people coming out to compete, make connections, and enjoy an evening sample taste of football. As has become the norm for Van Curen's baby, the event was organized, structured, ran well, and was highly competitive.

In addition to eyeing prospects up, measuring their combine performances (40-yard dash, Pro Agility, Broad Jump), I was fortunate enough to receive unimpeded access to the grounds to evaluate and scout the talent on hand. In this article, I share my notes for the position group mentioned in its title.

Having already highlighted, in my opinion, the best quarterback at the camp in teammate [player_tooltip player_id='934015' first='Arique' last='Fleming'], two of the Elizabeth Minutemen's militia at wide receiver also shined. For anyone watching, it was clear that [player_tooltip player_id='1305209' first='Qua'Yon' last='Williams'] not only had a breakout performance at this camp, but was unequivocally its best performer. Williams was a Triple Crown guy, scoring amongst the event's best in the 40-yard dash, Pro Agility, and Broad Jump and, as you might expect, still balled out like a demon. Williams left an acclaimed North Jersey Non-public defensive back burnt like toast on an out-and-up. Later on the 2027 graduate showcased fluid, shifty hips when he severed a defender's ankles who was playing with about a 5-yard cushion, amounting him to rubble, on what I remarked as an "inverted whip route." This trend continued as he snapped his hips down, hard, breaking yet another defender to the ground on an out route. Additionally, he showed that he has the moves to beat defenders trying to wall him off, gaining inside leverage toward the middle of the field. Not lost on him, however, are fundamentals, as Williams showed an outstanding ability to high point the ball and only use his hands to make catches. To-date, Williams owns a Temple offer with more to surely forthcoming... With Williams primed for a breakthrough junior campaign, classmate [player_tooltip player_id='857107' first='Nahjae' last='Smith'] has already arrived. In addition to Temple, Smith has offers from Syracuse, Maryland, Michigan State, Boston College, UMass, and Duke - and after seeing him live it is clear to see why. With all these offers and impending NIL money, Smith might need to invest in bigger shorts, as his quads had him looking like the Incredible Hulk out there. I was afraid that if he sat down too quickly, his shorts would have ripped to shreds. With an upper body to match, Smith was far from slow. As he ran his routes you saw him accelerate, gain speed, and separate with every stride. This speed, along with upper body fakes and route discipline, led to him becoming about 8 yards open on a corner route. I saw plenty of Smith this afternoon, as it seemed as though his competitive nature pushed him to be greedy with the reps, seeking every bit of work that he could. Hell, after looking at this specimen and obvious work he put in this offseason, I would want to light everyone up too. The trio of Fleming, Smith, and Williams - all of which are still rising juniors - makes Elizabeth a deathly-scary offensive unit for the next two falls.

One of Elizabeth's opponents this year will be St. Thomas Aquinas out of Edison. Featured on their roster is [player_tooltip player_id='1703731' first='Anthony' last='Perez']. Perez profiled as more of a smaller, slight, quick slot receiver. In the limited action I saw of him, the rising senior did a great job of extending his arms and hands, maximizing his reach in the process, to haul in the ball. With his skillset and profile, Perez is an ideal safety blanket for his quarterback... A similar tendency to extend for the ball was also possessed by [player_tooltip player_id='1703730' first='Michael' last='Knox']. Knox, a tight end, used his reach to corral the ball sooner rather than later. However, different than Perez before him, Knox used his bigger body well by boxing out as he returned to the ball while extending. In a much different sense because of a much different skillset and profile, he too projects as a reliable safety valve - and there should be ample opportunity for Knox this year with so much talent at the skill positions having graduated for DePaul.

From one DePaul prospect to another, [player_tooltip player_id='606227' first='Mason' last='James'] - presumably the brother of since-graduated Spartan running back Nolan James - looked for an increased time share as a target this fall. I thought that James did an outstanding job high pointing the ball, really using his height and extension to nab it at its apex; however, in the little that I caught of him I did not see James create that much natural separation. That said, given his size, perhaps tight end is a spot for him this fall, which will be his senior season?.. Creating perfect symmetry from the last paragraph, Shabazz sent rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1703729' first='Josiah' last='Perez'] to compete. In making the short trip from a town over, Perez showed that he can gain an inside release when pressed at the line. For as hard as he releases and runs, it did not appear that all that much separation was made - at least on that route. Later on I noticed more separation was evident due to shoulder shakes and hip drops when breaking off of his stem. He does, however, use his hands to receive the ball and high points well.

Closing out are two St. Peter's Prep prospects, the eldest of either leading off. [player_tooltip player_id='1704009' first='Ryan' last='Bartels'], a 2026 graduate proved that he can create a tremendous amount of space, blowing past and separating from defenders, when left unchallneged at the line. I did noticed that the rising senior has the proclivity to take an outside release. Tracking the ball over his shoulder is a strength of his, while he should be reminded to catch the ball with his hands and not his body more often... From a rising senior to a rising sophomore, [player_tooltip player_id='852444' first='Kymore' last='Monroe'] and I have crossed paths for like the fourth time this camp season. Now being more acquainted with his game than ever, quickness and acceleration are the clear, defiing elements of his game. Monroe used his quickness to cook defenders who were too tight with pivot routes. Conversely, he then used his speed to stretch defenders out vertically. Despite his size, Monroe proved that he can track the ball well when he goes deep.
