Only three articles left covering the recent PrepRedzoneMN 2026 Rankings Update! I'm starting to feel that our coverage post-update has been robust, and although we still have a fair bit of names to highlight, I'd like to think our readers are starting to get to know this class as well as we know them. The rising seniors have a ton of talent, that much can be confirmed, and they've also done a good job of getting out in the local camp circuit and attending both PRzMN Showcases as well as regional mega camps and prospect camps that our scouts are attending. However, there's always going to be a few recruits who are as mysterious as they are intriguing. Whether that means they have limited film available, no social media, unverified size and/or athleticism, have never been seen padded by our scouts, or a combination of any number of these factors, these prospects are always a blend of Biggest Mysteries/Most Upside, and the MN 2026 class is well-stocked in this year's department. Size, length, eye-catching, tape, small schoolers, and big unknowns are all at a premium here. Dig in!

--

A longstanding known name, Big Body, mystery, and highly-intriguing lineman in the 2026 class, Mahtomedi's [player_tooltip player_id='924342' first='Dawson' last='Duback'] continues to draw and keep the attention of PrepRedzoneMN. Hovering around 6'4-6'5, Duback is going into his third year as a varsity starter with the 5A Zephyrs, and despite multiple years of good film, Duback has yet to be seen by a PrepRedzoneMN scout. Sadly, we weren't able to check Maht put in 2024 during the season, and Duback didn't make a stop at any PrepRedzoneMN Showcases or college prospect camps that we attended this summer (which was a lot, shoutout [player_tooltip player_id='1292716' first='Nate' last='Wahl']), so we don't have a lick of verified information on the young man. He doesn't even have a Twitter, so I'm not sure if any college has contacted him or not.

Duback could be offensive center #1 in the class. At his aforementioned height, you have to like the lower body flexibility and ability to bend, not to mention the football IQ it takes to play the position. However, he possesses excellent overall positional versatility, showing reps at OC, LT, DT, and DE in his junior tape and many exciting traits at whatever position he lines up at. Off the jump, Duback possesses great lateral agility and is especially impressive when reaching DL. This isn't an easy task, and Duback does it as smoothly and effectively as any OL in the class. He's a good 1v1 run blocker who does a good job of attacking half a man and using his height and length, as well as leg drive, to turn and out-maneuver iDL and that aforementioned leg drive is also noticeable and strong. He has good reps of him putting large DEs on skates and out of the camera frame, and Duback also owns a strong initial punch that knocks defenders backward, solid strength, great balance, and can gain both width and depth off the snap when needed and is generally comfortable in pass pro. The 250 lber. is also a 3T DT and 5T DE who stuffs gaps and easily eats double teams, owns a good get-off for his size, and can beat OL with his first step, length, and quickness. I'm just itching to get some information or eyes on this kid. Hope to see you soon, Dawson!

One of the biggest mysteries of the entire 2026 class uncoincidentally is one of the highest upside. With all of the huff and hype surrounding Bloomington Kennedy's Top 25 junior OT [player_tooltip player_id='924346' first='Jayveon' last='Kelly'], who is in real contention for a Minnesota Gophers offer, it seems that 6'5, 240 lb DL [player_tooltip player_id='924239' first='James' last='Girley'] has gone under the D1 radar as quietly as any prospect in the state. Scrolling through his Twitter, you see heavyweight followers like 247Sports' Ryan Burns, GopherIllustrated, Kansas State's RB Coach Brian Anderson, Iowa State WR Noah Pauley and DPP Trent Slattenow, North Dakota's Eric Schmidt and Isaac Fruechte, former UMN DL Coach Winston DeLattiboudere III, UNI DC Al Smith, and Washington State WR coach Jake Menage. That's not to mention all of the DII coaches who follow him as well. Pulling up Kennedy's MNFootballHub page and player stats also catch the eye, as Girley posted 69 tackles, 7 TFLs, 2 sacks, and a blocked kick in 2024, impressive stats for a defensive lineman and one that indicates that he knows how to use his impressive size to his advantage.

The film adds to the mystique, as Girley is a massive physical presence who towers over his peers and competition on tape and flashes physical dominance at times in his limited junior film. However, there isn't a lot of tape, and he also seems a bit stiff and off-balance at times, so I don't really know what to take away from the film overall. Girley completely envelops RBs and QBs at the contact point and can get off blocks at will thanks to his strength and hand usage, but there are also reps of him not really doing a lot and/or seeing plays fall into his lap. Seems like a kid who NEEDS to be evaluated in person, especially padded. We'll see if we can get this kid to the upcoming PRzMN spring showcase.

I'm not sure what is in the water in the Norwood-Young America area, but the Central High School football program is pumping out NCAA Create-A-Player recruits like a factory as of late. With 6'6, 225 lb. senior [player_tooltip player_id='945930' first='Carter' last='Storms'] off to NSIC heavyweight Augustana and 2026, 6'4, 215 lb. Kansas offeree [player_tooltip player_id='1102620' first='Micah' last='Fenney'] firmly on the radars of high-major colleges, PRzMN wants to make sure that 6'4, 215 lb. DE [player_tooltip player_id='1602715' first='Taylor' last='Hackbarth'] gets his fair share of the spotlight. A good athlete who came in at around 6'3 and posted a 4.6 shuttle and 8'7 broad jump this past summer, Hackbarth was a standout performer when PRzMN saw the Raiders take on eventual Class AA champion Jackson County Central in some win-or-go-home state quarterfinal action, shooting gaps in the LOS with pace and making clean, disruptive tackles and sacks in the backfield 1v1 and in space. His length and frame were eye-catching as well, and Hackbarth - at that point - wasn't known to us at PRzMN. We're glad he's known now, as Hackbarth posted 83 tackles, 13 TFLs, 4.5 sacks for good production as a junior while going deep in the state playoffs against some high-quality small school competition. The junior displays a great get-off that easily gains width when working gap to gap and smoothly slides into the backfield and wades through traffic in search of the ball. Has a good rep of him pulling an OT onto his face before sniffing out a screen and making a beautiful TFL against Randolph. The DE, who generally operates as a 5T with his hand in the dirt, is a rangy defensive lineman who can cover noticeable ground in run support and run down ball carriers from the backside of the LOS. His long arms and heavy hands help him easily shed blocks when he rips and works off an offensive lineman, and those same long arms help him wrap up and corral ball carriers 1v1 and close space effectively as well. Hackbarth can unlock his hips and bend at the top of the arc well, beating OTs to their playside shoulder and easily closing on the QB with physical effect, and I love his great chop/rip and ability to get skinny and slide right past a blocker through the gap. The size, production, film combination at a premier position in football can't help one to think about the high potential and upside possible in this NYA junior sleeper.

Nothing catches my attention quite like a 6'3, 200 lb. safety, especially on a Class 4A semifinalist. Orono's [player_tooltip player_id='1602677' first='Dane' last='Kanwischer'] was a can't-miss, eye-catching prospect on more than one occasion last season in front of PRzMN's eyes, including in state semifinal action. We were lucky enough to attend one of the year's best contests of the 2024 regular season, when Orono took on Totino-Grace in what ended as a last-minute, go-ahead TD and 2pt conversion by the Eagles late in the 4th quarter. Here's what we wrote about Kanwischer from that physical playoff preview:

"Eye-catching size from the FS position that passed the eye test with flying colors, Kanwischer was an imposing, physical, and athletic presence at the back of the Spartans' defense. Kanwischer has good speed for his size and was able to corral, run down, and generally act as a safety valve for his defense when RBs would occasionally get loose. easily able to clean up messes thanks to his strong ability to tackle in space and in 1v1 situations, Kanwischer also had some boom at the contact point and laid some massive hits on TG RBs throughout the game and I liked how he always seemed to be in good position and able to clean up big plays of the Eagles. Kanwischer is a big reason why Orono's defense is so stingy, and his eye-catching size at the position really helps improve his stock as a collegiate prospect. He's also a heckuva athlete and was doing some impressive things during halftime warm-ups just messing around out there, so I am suddenly very bullish on his projection to the college level."

That's only an in-person eval, and although Kanwischer didn't have any 2024 film publicly available at the time of the PRzMN 2026 Official Rankings Update, he finally uploaded some this month, so take his current ranking with a grain of salt and know that it will be updated some time in the very near future.

Kanwischer is a strong, confident, and technically sound tackler at the third level of the defense who can consistently succeed as the last line of defense, and make crucial 1v1 tackles in space and in the hole, no matter how big or fast the ball carrier. Takes good angles to the ball, squeezes the space out of the ball carrier, and brings his hips through contact. Swallows up ball carriers and is one of the best tacklers in Minnesota. He put a couple of big hits on ball carriers off a full head of steam too, and runs the alley effectively, is rangy in run support, and sticks RBs where they stand, and doesn't allow extra gains or yardage post-contact. The 6'3 safety also can cover 1v1 in man coverage out of the slot, showing he can read and break on the football with effectiveness and physicality. He'd be an excellent SS or even LB at the next level, and I hope college coaches have him on their radar, he's a fun watch for any lover of defensive backs. Now that he has film, we'd love to get some eyes on this kid in a camp setting. Hope to see him soon!

Also a Top Newcomer and highly-rated debutant in the recently updated PRzMN 2026 Big Board, Maple Grove's stud RB [player_tooltip player_id='1362824' first='Patrick' last='Wright'] is five foot, eleven inches, and 190 pounds of playmaking ability, but playing on Minnesota's best 2024 roster can have its disadvantages. Wright was sitting behind senior Chuck Langama, Minnesota's RB1 last season, and although we got to see Wright do his thing in person multiple times throughout 2024, including a start against Minnetonka in which he was the key to the Crimson's victory offensively, he did not have a full workload last fall and wasn't able to truly highlight what he brings to the table as RB1 throughout the course of a football season. Not only that, Wright didn't make any appearances (that we know of) on this past summer's camp circuit, so we don't have any verified athletic data on the potential game-changing, high-upside running back for a potential college suitor. However, we do know that Wright can flat-out ball, and have watched him tear up some of 6A's best defenses, as well as put the team on his back, in 2024 thanks to his lethal combination of power and quickness. Wright posted 694 yards and 9 TDs in 2024, showing he can run over you, run by you, or juke you out of your shoes with his smooth and fluid running style and gait that seems to float past defenders and would-be tacklers, getting him up to the third level of a defense before you know it. He's a smooth cutter who sends defenders flying past him for out-of-control missed tackles and wraps when he sticks and plants laterally, and I love how he can drop his hips and smoothly break tackles and float by defenders with a minor mid-run adjustment to their pursuit paths. Wright also displays great vision and naturally follows his blocks and allows a play and big run to develop in front of him. I just want to see him work on the top-end speed a bit and finish big runs once he finds space. The junior also took some safety reps and showed he can read, react, and pursue ball carriers for minimal gains and blocked a dropped punt that was picked up and returned by a Crimson defender for six. This dude is a two-way starter on most teams in the state with a ton of good football in front of him. Just a straightforward natural and strong football player! Going to be a monster senior season for Wright in 2025.

I've been looking forward to writing about Mahtomedi's [player_tooltip player_id='1255907' first='Connor' last='Finn'] since the moment I saw the first rep of his 2026 film. The first time PRzMN got to see Finn in person was this past summer during preseason high school 7v7 action under a hot Minnesota July sun. However, the 6'3, 200 lb. eye-catcher was playing WR for Stillwater, and I did not know his name. He played well, catching a TD if I remember correctly, but I couldn't nail down his name and published the recap without him in it. After some asking around later, I found out that the player was Finn, and he had transferred to Mahtomedi right before the season began to really shake things up. Little did I know that he was going to play quarterback for the Zephyrs, and after a long day of grinding tape for the now-released 2026 rankings, I was startled and left in awe by Finn's in-you-face arm talent littered throughout his junior tape.

However, things get a bit messy when you start digging into the stats. Maht only went 3-7 in 2024, and Finn went 48 of 123 (39%) for 970 yards and 12 TDs to 5 INTs as a junior. That's far from ideal accuracy, but the talented gunslinger is also up to 6'3, 210 lbs. now, and is a LHP and first baseman for Maht's baseball team in the spring. Finn opens his tape with a Russell Wilson-esque moonball of a deep skinny post that seemed to touch the sky before dropping precisely into the bucket of the awaiting receiver's arms, and right in between the burnt CB and safety rolling over top I must add. Second play keeps the good times going, as Finn is rolling to his left before stopping his feet right before the sideline, juking out a would-be rusher, and then hurling a ball off his 50 yards (I'm not kidding) off his back foot, right over the paws of a leaping and outstretched Spring Lake Park DB, and right into his wideout's hands. Two SLP DL were bearing down on him as well. Third rep sees Finn snap the ball out of his left wrist downfield nearly 50 yards downfield to hit a streaking wideout in stride again in what looked as effortless as a simple slant route. Three of the better throws I saw while scouting QB tape for PRzMN, and that's coming from what is the best QB class in Minnesota since 2012. The lefty displays great touch on his vertical throws a quick release and gets the ball out of his hand with urgency, and smooth mechanics. He shows one of the biggest arms in the state and can push the ball vertically with exceptional ease and with accuracy, as well as throw off-platform and from various untraditional arm angles with pressure bearing down on him. He's also mobile, and can extend plays with legs and throw well on the move. Definitely curious to see where that overlap of raw talent to below average accuracy devluges, making Finn a good choice for one of the Biggest Mysteries/Most Upside 2026s in Minnesota.

Located four hours NW of my home in Minneapolis and representing the White Earth Reservation and Mahnomen/Waubun High School, 6'4, 205 lb. QB/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1602764' first='Blake' last='McMullen'] was a recruiting darling of the 2024 state semifinal round of action at U.S. Bank Stadium, coming to our attention for the first time in the Thunderbirds' tight semifinal loss to Springfield High School. A 6'4, 205 lber. bruiser of a quarterback & ball carrier, McMullen was a load and a half to try and tackle for the Tiger's defense, and he could move the chains with either his arm or his legs while showing some playmaking athleticism at his size. Despite the loss, McMullen definitely made an impression, and in his junior campaign, he totaled 32 completions on 64 attempts (50%) for 500 yards and 10 TDs to 4 INTs, as well as 390 rushing yards and 11 more TDs on the ground, not to mention 9 tackles, a TFL, and a FF, according to MNFootballHub. However, things get tricky in his evaluation as the XL QB has no film, so it was really hard to get a proper ranking finalized without any context besides the state semifinal showing. Without reaching too far out on a limb, I kind of like the player comparison of McMullen to 2025 Hawley QB [player_tooltip player_id='945349' first='Noah' last='Nelson'], a quarterback with similar size, albeit a bit better of an arm, who will go on to play TE for the NDSU Bison. That small school utility, size, and dynamic athleticism as a ball carrier, not to mention toughness, could project well to a couple different positions at the next level. EDGE [player_tooltip player_id='1581342' first='Brian' last='Sowada'] is dripping with upside. Big School experience as a junior, positional versatility as a hybrid OLB/EDGE/DE, and bringing decent production to the section champion after finishing his season with 43 tackles, 3 TFLs, a sack, and an INT. The frame is about as good as it gets for a collegiate S&C coordinator, as he's long, lean, wiry, and has a ton of room to fill in and add weight, adding to his potential versatility at the next level. I've likened Sowada to the PRzMN 2026 ranking's version of Andrew Van Ginkel in a recent evaluation of the junior, as he's a real-deal pass defender who can sniff out screens, bubbles, and dumps, as well as cover out of the slot in man and zone coverage. Sowada is a 3-4 OLB with a ton of alignment flexibility, both inside and outside the box, and can change direction and redirect around the LOS when pursuing RBs and QBs, banging off the inside blockers before sticking his cleat in the turf and getting back upfield or down the alley to pursue to the sideline, He attacks blockers with proper leverage, can hold and defend the edge, and can beat blocks and make TFLs around the perimeter to halt an opponent's screen and quick game, The 205 lber. shows a good get-off and shoots into the backfield quickly, scrapes tight down the LOS and plays tight off a blocker's backside in run defense, and can make tackles through contact. I love how well he tackles in space and in 1v1 settings, and his long arms show a solid pop at initial contact and he creates noticeable separation from DL when he locks out and extends his arms. There are some exciting traits to say the least, and it's easy to see that Sowada's best football is still in front of him. Wyoming met with the junior when he came into Blaine and Augustana has sent an official junior day invite.

No college program in their right mind is going to say no to an athletic 6'3, 190 lb. He's been averaging 8.4 PPG, 9.3 RPG, and 2 APG on the hardcourt this winter, but hasn't been playing full-time, perhaps due to injury, adding to the mystique and list of unknowns surrounding him. Additionally, he has less than two minutes of junior season footage publicly available, but in it, you can see that Lorenzen is a long-strider who accelerates out of his breaks well and owns strong hands that can reel in receptions out of the air and away from his body. He can finish catches in traffic and through tight coverage + big oncoming hits, is smooth at the top of the route, can take the top off the defense and track the deep ball well, and owns a big catch radius. Seems like a legit multi-sport prospect, but man, we gotta see this kid in person. However, he does have recent Hudl tape as a colossal left wing on the Baudette-based high school's hockey team, so although I'm not clear if this kid even plays football still, I figured the eye-catching size at a premier position in Minnesota high school football recruiting should at least hold down a stop on the 2026 state watchlist. Worth inquiring about if you're a college coach recruiting Northern Minnesota.

Not sure what's going on in Cannon Falls, but the Bombers have had some absolutely gigantic prep football prospects the past few seasons. OLB [player_tooltip player_id='1602761' first='Talant' last='Rifenberick']. The Division 1-worthy size is an immediate attention-grabber, and to sweeten the pot, Rifenberick totaled 14 tackles, 4 TFLs, 2 sacks, and 1 FF for the 8-3 Bombers in 2024. However, this is where my information on the young man ends, as I haven't seen him, he didn't camp anywhere that we saw last summer, and he only has thirty seconds worth of game tape from this past season. In it, you can see that has a great get-off for his size, exploding into the backfield for both TFLs and sacks and occasionally through double teams with easy effort. His closing speed and physicality are also noticeable and impressive on film. After a great showing at the 2024 Minnesota state semifinals, Hanson was firmly on our radar as a possible D1 kid, and we weren't shy about sharing it with the world. His first-class height/length combination at two positions that Minnesota traditionally produces well at (DE/EDGE and TE), as well his individual play style and skillset, had some itching to get more information on the 9man standout. Look at our recent Biggest Stock Risers report on the site for a more detailed breakdown, but Hanson is a nasty two-way starter with physicality and a mean streak on the offensive side of the ball, as well as legit juice as a pass catcher, and is an instinctive, three-down DE edge presence who can impact the run and passing game of opponents. Athletic and effective in space, natural edge setter and defender, and uses his length to not get tied up or blocked at the LOS or out on the perimeter. The upside, as well as athleticism, are staring you straight in the face, but we need to confirm the size and athleticism we see on tape in person before we can really get a proper evaluation in on him. It's always mysterious checking in on 9Man kids, but the upside couldn't be bigger in the small-town kid from Northern Minnesota.

One of the more unique prospects I've seen in my time with PrepRedzoneMN/Northstar Football News, Prior Lake's [player_tooltip player_id='1522534' first='Colten' last='Gunderson'] is a 6'6, 205 lb. WR/TE hybrid and one of the most outrageous mismatches and receiving options we've seen in Minnesota in a while. Fighting against 6A competition, Gunderson was a redzone and fade ball nightmare for opponents, showing the ball skills, bounce, body control, and overall vertical ability you could only dream of from a 6'6 pass-catcher out on the perimeter with an accomplished basketball background like Gunderson's. He can win 50/50 balls like it's no-bodies business, and his catch radius is absolutely massive. Plus, his length and balance are impressive and an asset as a route runner and when fighting through contact and press-man, as well as a blocker when dismantling CBs and safeties downfield, springing his fellow Lakers loose for big gains. The unique, rare, and specific build and skillset, as well as the possibilities and potential his frame presents at 6'6, 205 lbs., make him my choice for the prospect with the #1 most amount of upside in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. However, the lack of verified measurables adds some mystery, but if you want a name that could blow up during the summer camp szn, look no further.

A top-tier prospect in the Great State of Minnesota, 6'5, 230 lb. All-Conference DE [player_tooltip player_id='1581336' first='Ajibola' last='Afuye'] is on a short list of Minnesotans who have been consistently on the radar of the in-state Minnesota Gophers. He is invited to their upcoming Junior Day as well as legitimately possessing a chance to earn the coveted in-state B1G offer, and that's no surprise given the frame, size, and athleticism displayed in his junior film. Afuye went form a 6'3-6'4, 210 lb. sophomore to a near 6'5, 230+ lb. junior 6A defensive end who exploded onto the D1 recruiting scene thanks to his strong play with the Ponies in 2024. This is where his relationship with the Golden Gophers began, as word quickly spread about the mystery defensive end coming out of Stillwater High School. The likes of NDSU, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, and South Dakota visited Stilly to meet Afuye this offseason, and the DE also visited Fargo for the Bison's junior day as well. The issue is that the size and athleticism need to be confirmed with both testing and in-person evals and workouts, so I'll be working my tail off to get this kid to the upcoming PRZMN spring showcase. I think Afuye is going to have to prove it, and potentially blow up, on the offseason and summer camp circuit.

The junior tape, in which Afuye totaled 60 tackles, 6 TFLs, 4 sacks, one blocked FG, and 2 PBUs, shows a standup EDGE who can align as far as a WIDE9 along the LOS, also puts his hands in the dirt and operates and finds work as a 5T. He looks flexible and shows good pad level in his stance and off the snap, owns loose hips that he can unlock to beat OTs at the top of the arc and a strong base when he drops his hips and sets his feet. He's twitchy, shows good initial pop and does a good job of setting and defending the edge with proper leverage, and his long arms and bounce helped him block a FG attempt last season. Afuye does a good job of not getting tied up by blockers around the LOS and using his hands to shock and shed OTs and TEs. Does a good job of locking out his arms and creating separation to hold OL at bay when reading and finding the rock. uses his strong hands and active arm usage to then shed and tackle at or behind the LOS. He displays quick lateral agility and can read, anticipate, and cut past incoming OL and pulling blockers to win 1v1s with quickness, and he reacts to offensive run concepts and oncoming blockers effectively in run support. His noticeable body control catches the eye and flashes tons of athleticism, he does a great job of executing twists and stunts and can cover a ton of ground with quick, concise movements laterally off the snap, and is a physical tackler and goes all-out into contact and laid some big hits on helpless QBs in 2024. His length and athleticism are an asset and he's always looking to create a big hit or crushing collision. I'm itching and scratching to get this kid on the microscope ASAP.

--

Dig in!
