This weekend, Minnesota rounded out their 2025 high school football season with 7 state championship games from each conference at U.S. Bank Stadium. On Friday, Class 1A, 2A, 4A, and 6A had their championship games with different results, and I was able to capture the experience of each of these games in person. Today, we recap what went down at U.S. Bank Stadium in the first day of the two-day Prep Bowl state championship weekend to round out the 2025 high school football season!

1A:

Breckenridge vs. Minneota: 49-14

Minneota's dominance in Class 1A is unheralded, and they now have 6 state championship titles under their belt since 2015. It didn't start out that way, as Breckenridge was able to take a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks in part to 2 turnovers forced by their defense. However, the Vikings turned the tides in the second quarter, and once they got traction, there was no stopping them, as they claimed a 21-7 lead at halftime and never looked back. Minneota made it look easy, and their performance proves exactly why they have been state champions for now 4 straight years as they add on to an unprecedented 46 game winning streak.

Top Performer: Tristen Sussner (JR) - Overcoming a shaky first quarter where he threw an interception, Sussner finished 5 of 8 for 112 yards passing and a beautiful 44 yard TD pass off a double-reverse flea flicker play. He also ran for 30 yards on 4 carries and 3 rushing TDs.

2A:

Goodhue vs. Jackson County Central: 20-15

On the board, Jackson County Central dominated offensively, outgaining Goodhue (411-214). However, they committed a whopping 6 turnovers, including 4 in the first half alone, which allowed the game to stay close. However, Goodhue was unable to capitalize off of most of their opportunities, though they were able to claim a 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter, marking the first time JCC trailed in a game all season. Relying on the dominance of their run game, which racked up 331 of their total yards, #1 prospect [player_tooltip player_id='212362' first='Roman' last='Voss'] punched in both a TD and a 2-point conversion with just over 4 minutes remaining. Goodhue was ultimately stuffed and JCC ran out the clock to earn back-to-back 2A titles in a much closer than anticipated showdown.

Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='212362' first='Roman' last='Voss'] (SR) - The superstar QB rallied JCC through their struggles and ultimately were able to claw their way to victory. Voss ran for a career-high 252 rushing yards and 3 rushing TDs while completing 7 passes for 80 yards.

4A:

Orono vs. Kasson-Mantorville: 21-14

A tale of two halves, Orono's offense was fully clicking in the first 24 minutes of the game, dashing their way to 21 unanswered points in the first half as the Komets weren't able to find any traction on offense. However, the Komets turned the tides in the second half, slowing the Spartans' offense down and scoring 14 unanswered. After a prolonged drive to run down the clock, Orono committed a costly interception, giving the Komets the ball back with good field position with just 3 and a half minutes to go. The Komets droved the ball inside Orono's 35 yard line, but a deep shot on 4th and 2 ultimately got broken up, allowing the Spartans to run out the rest of the clock and earn the first football state title in school history.

Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='2003335' first='Griffin' last='Mauer'] (SR) - Mauer struggled on the air with 2 picks, so he turned to his legs to power his way through the Komets for the 4A title. Mauer finished 3 of 7 for 68 yards passing while rushing for 55 yards on 13 carries and 2 rushing TDs. He also converted all 3 of the team's extra point attempts and punted twice, averaging 31 yards per punt.

6A:

Moorhead vs. Edina: 42-35

As expected, the battle for the 6A title was a shootout with neither team letting up. Moorhead was able to overcome a 27-15 deficit early in the 3rd quarter to take a 28-27 lead with just over 9 minutes remaining. However, Edina immediately responded with two touchdown runs, including one off of a failed 4th and 7 attempt by Moorhead, which proved pivotal in building a lead in which Moorhead was unable to recover from. Spuds QB [player_tooltip player_id='1194605' first='[player_tooltip player_id='1194604' first='Jett' last='']' last='Feeney'] accumulated over 400 yards of total offense and 4 TDs, but it wasn't enough to overcome Edina, who played nearly perfect football to earn their first prep bowl championship and the school's first football state championship in nearly 50 years.

Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='923840' first='Chase' last='Bjorgaard'] (SR) - Bjorgaard was completely unstoppable, rumbling his way through the Spuds defense with ease all night. Bjorgaard ran for a whopping 320 yards on 31 carries (10.3 YPC) and 4 rushing TDs while also catching 2 passes for 31 yards, both of his receptions going for TDs from [player_tooltip player_id='592125' first='Mason' last='West'], accounting for every single scoring play for Edina on Friday night.
