A topsy-turvy season in Class 5A reached the final-four stage with Friday's quarterfinals. West Des Moines Valley and Dowling Catholic, Southeast Polk and Iowa City Liberty advanced to this coming Friday's semifinals at the UNI-Dome.

All four winners played host to quarterfinal games. Three-time defending champion Southeast Polk was the only one in the quartet to play a postseason road game, winning at Pleasant Valley in Round 1.

It's an interesting group. We'll talk more about how they match up in a game preview coming up later this week.

First, let's look back at how they got here and the student-athletes that stood out during the quarterfinal round:

Dowling 14, Centennial 10

These teams were separated by nine points over eight quarters and three overtimes this season. Dowling won both meetings. While the first matchup featured 42 points scored in regulation, Friday's meeting was more defensive oriented. Centennial led, 3-0, at halftime.

The Maroons two-quarterback system continued to win. Parker DePhillips and [player_tooltip player_id='401674' first='Joey' last='Nahas'] combined to complete 10 of 15 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. [player_tooltip player_id='847998' first='Rashawd' last='Davis'] carried 24 times for 111 yards, and [player_tooltip player_id='1619623' first='Sam' last='Drexler'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1279753' first='Trey' last='Wilson'] each caught a touchdown.

[player_tooltip player_id='856072' first='Ian' last='Middleton'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1278782' first='Dylan' last='Manning'] shared the team-lead with 7.0 tackles apiece for Dowling. Manning recorded six solo stops, 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. [player_tooltip player_id='245539' first='Parker' last='Pearson'] contributed four solo stops, and [player_tooltip player_id='1279750' first='Cartyr' last='Smith'] recorded a sack.

The Maroons improved to 10-1 on the season, while Centennial finished up at 8-3.
