Last Season (9-4)

After starting the season 1-2 with tough losses against out-of-state Alcoa (TN) and a challenging 13-7 loss against Abraham Lincoln in their first PSAL game, Tottenville handled nearly every other team they played except for the eventual champions Erasmus Hall. Tottenville won every game by double digits, as most teams could not contain their running game. Their Second meeting with Erasmus Hall was closer than the first meeting when they gave the Dutchman a scare, holding the lead through several points of the game, but it was 21 unanswered points from Erasmus Hall that created too large of a gap to come back from in a game that ended 28-21. Either way, it was an improvement from the previous season when they went 5-6, and for a team that featured an entire underclassman backfield at QB/RB, nine wins is a great place to be.

Brown, who easily could be considered the top prospect of this Tottenville team just like Bent, holds multiple P4 offers but adds some verified speeds on the track to his reputation that not many backs in the northeast can compete with. A shorter prospect at 5'7, Brown is very built and muscular. While Bent shouldered a lot in the regular season, it was Brown who dominated the postseason, which saw Tottenville make it to the PSAL championship game.

McCalip is slightly undersized for the LB position but not by much at 5'11 195lbs. An All-City selection last season, McCalip brings quickness and twitchiness to the LB position for the Pirates. McCalip uses his elusiveness and twitch to avoid blocks and navigate traffic against inside runs. He also shows strong hands and the ability to shed blocks when OL do make contact with him. As a tackler, he consistently can close, wrap up, and make solo tackles in space.

Thompson, who plays an EDGE role, could develop into more of an OLB play type at the next level. Thompson, who is 6'2, looks like a long, lean prospect with a strong wingspan. He comes around the edge with some bend. Even though you see it more against the run than some true pass-rush reps, he is very active with his hands and feet, which is both a positive in terms of his motor and the fact he is trying to get through blocks, but there could be some more refinement in his hand use, footwork, and overall body control.

Cardona is among the top 2025 Centers in New York, already sporting an offer from Misericordia. At 6'2 "and 285 lbs, Cardona is decently sized for the Center position, but his movement skills are what separate him from other prospects. Cardona shows on tape he is quick enough to execute reach blocks consistently and shows good footwork and angles in his lower body during both reach blocks and down blocks.

At times, Cardona can play a little high, but there are reps where he shows an explosive snap out of his stance and plays with leverage. Continuing to do that more consistently will help Cardona move guys off the LOS more.

Velazquez plays that hybrid SS/LB role for Tottenville and does a great job coming downhill in the box. Velazquez shows good upfield burst and does a good job shooting gaps on an angle. Many of his plays against the run-on tape come against zone runs where he can penetrate the backfield.

On tape, you also see some promising pass rush reps and reps in zone coverage in the hook/curl area of the field. Velazquez may be a DIII prospect because of his measurables, but he brings a versatile skill set to the Pirates' defense.

Trinidad Jr. was part of Tottenville's strong offensive line group last season, which returns multiple starters. However, of all the prospects, if Trinidad Jr. can take a big jump in his play, I think he will become a better college prospect and help improve an already very strong run game. He can play both OT/OG and show on tape he can hang against the better DL in the PSAL.

I think Trinidad Jr will bring more explosive movements and a more powerful punch to his game this season. On his Junior tape, he often eased into blocks with not enough violence. While he showed he could maintain and throw guys to the ground, his ability to sustain and control made him a quality blocker. Those stronger explosive movements and initial contact will make for a much more complete OL prospect across the OL.

2024 Outlook

HC: Brian Neville

Their schedule starts off with a bang in Bishop Moore out of Florida, making the trip to Staten Island and then visiting a strong Neumann-Goretti team for their non-conference play. Tottenville needs to get off to a fast start because they face a gauntlet of teams at the end of the season with Port Richmond, Lincoln, an underrated Midwood team, Erasmus Hall, A young and remade Canarsie team,, and Curtis in five straight before the playoffs. There is no stretch that will prepare you more for the playoffs than having all those squads in a row.

3 Things Going For The Pirates

They return multiple OL prospects who have the ability to play at the next level

They have the best backfield duo in New York this year, and potentially the best duo New York has seen in multiple years

The defense has multiple key contributors returning in every position group

1 Area To Be Concerns

They lose a key QB & WR to transfer both players who would have raised the ceiling of the Tottenville offense by a good margin.

The Last Word

This team returns the best backfield New York has seen in a while; from a scouting and evaluation perspective, however good you think [player_tooltip player_id='402273' first='Tyshawn' last='Bent'] and [player_tooltip player_id='426454' first='Kory' last='Brown'] are, they are probably better than that. Both are so young and still developing athletes/bodies that they are just scratching what they can do in the PSAL. The offense does lose some playmaking at other positions, but those two alone are likely good enough to carry Tottenville through the season. The draw of the playoffs and seeding will matter more than before; with this looking like the year E-Hall has more guys to replace than usual and other PSAL teams bolstering their rosters there is no reason Tottenville can't push for the title like they did last season.
