The Collinsville Cardinals had another winning season and made another trip to the playoffs in 2023. The Cardinals would start fast with a 4-0 start but tripped up in week five against Bishop Kelley in district play. A week ten loss to Claremore by a touchdown would force the Cardinals to hit the road in the first round of the playoffs. They would square off with Coweta in the first round and it would end up being one of the best games of the first round. After trailing for the majority of the game, Collinsville would kick a field goal as time expired to score the 23-20 victory. But the magical playoff journey would end in the quarterfinals the following week when they fell to eventual champion Carl Albert. The Cardinals would finish off the season with a 9-3 record but there's a lot to be excited about moving forward. They averaged nearly 35 points per game and they bring back the majority of the production that put up those points in 2023. The Cardinals are only a few years removed from being the state champions in Class 5A and they aren't far away from climbing back to the mountaintop this season.

2024 OUTLOOK

That will be the expectation as they head into the 2024 season. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball and another seven starters are back on defense. On offense, they'll be boosted by the return of their starting quarterback, leading rusher and an emerging playmaker at the wide receiver position. The offensive line took a hit to graduation but the Cardinals are not lacking guys who can get the job done there. On defense, we anticipate the front seven to be the strength of that side of the ball. They return a lot of production from the defense and they could end up showing significant improvement from 2023 to this fall. The biggest question we have about the 2024 Collinsville Cardinals revolves around the big picture in Class 5A. We know that the Cardinals are going to be good. But can they be great? Carl Albert is once again the preseason favorite but Class 5A looks like it could be much more competitive this season. That opens the door for a program like Collinsville to make a run that could potentially end in Edmond. The district is a challenging one but the Cardinals will be in the mix for the top spot and if they secure that, they'll have a chance when the playoffs roll around.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that the offensive line unit got hit hard by graduation. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1323092' first='Austin' last='Choate'] is expected to step into a new role and appears to be ready for it if this spring is any indication. The 2025 offensive lineman is considered the captain of this unit already and should be the guy that sets the tone for the Cardinals up front on the line of scrimmage. When you look at this Collinsville roster, there is no doubt that they aren't lacking talent at the skill positions. If Choate and the offensive line come together quickly, the Cardinals will have a serious shot at making a run when the playoffs roll around in November.

One of the biggest losses to graduation is Hudson Henslick at the receiver position but they've already found his replacement. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='805100' first='Ben' last='Daniels'] was a breakout player in the Collinsville offense and he has a very similar game to Henslick so the Cardinals will be able to just plug Daniels into that role this fall. Despite being somewhat inexperienced and just a sophomore, Daniels made some big plays in some of the biggest games of the season, including their first round win over Coweta on the road. It won't be surprising if Daniels ends up leading the team in receiving this fall. He is absolutely electric with the football in his hands and is primed for a big year.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior standout [player_tooltip player_id='1323090' first='Chris' last='Goodman'] is definitely a player to keep an eye on. Goodman started last year on the defensive line and was very productive. He finished his junior season with nearly 50 tackles and seven sacks on the year. He's expecting that production to go up this season and we're expecting the front seven of this defense to be the strength of the unit. Having a talented player like Goodman back up front certainly helps with that prediction. Goodman has good size and absolutely explodes off the ball. He had a solid spring and seems like he's only getting better every time he steps on the field for Collinsville.

Collinsville junior running back and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1018641' first='Scott' last='Rigby'] is one of our favorite players that returns in Class 5A this season. Last year was a breakout season for Rigby and what's scary is how much better he could be this season. As a sophomore, Rigby ran for over 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns and emerged as the team's leading rusher on the season. And Rigby got better as the season moved along. The Collinsville standout averaged over 150 yards per game in the playoffs and that includes a season-high 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Collinsville's quarterfinal loss to Carl Albert. And don't forget he plays defense too, as he totaled over 50 tackles in 2023.

It seems like every time we see Collinsville junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='402384' first='Skyler' last='Moorman'] in person, he's better than the last time. Moorman has shown steady improvement over the last 18 months and there is no doubt that he could have a monster junior season. We've talked a lot about the talent that the Cardinals return at the skill positions and Moorman will be the guy driving this offense from the quarterback position. Moorman has weapons at wide receiver, a solid running game and an offensive line that might be a little inexperienced but they have talent there. The 2024 season could be a memorable one for him if he continues to progress as a quarterback.

Sept. 6th - Oologah
Sept. 13th - Edison
Sept. 20th - AT Bartlesville
- These two teams have met in non-district play in each of the last six seasons. The Cardinals have yet to lose to the Bruins but will wrap up non-district action in week three on the road in Bartlesville. Collinsville won the first three meetings from 2018-2020 but all three were decided by seven points or less. In the last three meetings, they've won each by at least double digits. But Bartlesville is extremely experienced heading into this season and will be a good challenge.
Sept. 27th - Del City
- There's no “easing in” to the district slate as the Cardinals will host Del City in the district opener. In a match-up of top five teams in Class 5A, we'll potentially see the district decided already with this match-up and it'll still be September. The Eagles made a run to the 5A title game a year ago but came up short to Carl Albert. They've reloaded and this should be a fantastic match-up of two teams that have terrific running games and strong defenses that like to hit.
Oct. 4th - AT [player_tooltip player_id='1161912' first='Will' last='Rogers']
Oct. 11th - Tahlequah
Oct. 17th - AT Claremore
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Collinsville will travel to face off with Claremore in a rematch of last year's week ten clash that saw Claremore winning 21-14. These two teams have been district foes since 2016 and last year's loss to Claremore snapped a seven game winning streak since they became district opponents nearly a decade ago. If Collinsville finds themselves unbeaten in district play, they could be a giant step closer to the district crown with a win here on the road.
Oct. 25th - Pryor
Nov. 1st - AT Nathan Hale
Nov. 8th - AT Memorial

NOTABLE

There's no doubt that Collinsville has been one of the more consistent Class 5A programs for over a decade now. Head coach Kevin Jones took over in 2010 and while his first two seasons ended in losing records, he hasn't had a losing record ever since. With the exception of the 2017 season that ended with a 5-5 record, Collinsville has routinely been several games over .500 and have been pretty consistently in the 8-10 wins every single season. They finally climbed the mountain in Class 5A in 2021 with a perfect season and a state championship. And as we head into this season, we think that Collinsville will once again be in the mix. But with so many talented juniors returning this fall, don't be surprised if the Cardinals are contending this fall as well as next season. The consistent dominance of Collinsville football under Kevin Jones shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
