From quarterbacks who’ve yet to play at the varsity level to those who have a run to the state championship game under their belt, these eight guys really stood out to me throughout the day.
Being named one of the events MVPs, Simon Lopez Simon Lopez 6’1″ | 180 lbs | QB Red Mountain | 2025 State AZ stood out for many reasons but nothing stood out more to me than his consistency. His accuracy was on point throughout the day and he threw a very catchable ball that the receivers didn’t have any trouble hauling in. It wasn’t just his arm though, Lopez was able to showcase his impressive athleticism by having the fastest 40-yard dash (4.72) and L-drill (6.87), as well as the longest broad jump (9’1″) of any quarterback in attendance. Following a season where he had 11 rushing touchdowns, Lopez looks ready to take another big jump while at the helm for Red Mountain.

This is my second time getting to watch Damir Ilicic Damir Ilicic 6’2″ | 190 lbs | QB Valley Vista | 2026 State AZ throw this offseason, and I came away even more impressed this time than I was last time. A player with some natural arm strength and great length, he has a really smooth delivery and great upper-half mechanics. What impressed me most seeing Ilicic at the PRZ Arizona combine was his ability to be accurate over and over again. He showed that arm strength very well, delivering balls with touch down the field. With most of the receivers being players he’s never thrown to, it can be difficult to time throws well; I thought Ilicic did a great job of leading receivers throughout the day. Ilicic could help a 2-8 Valley Vista team really turn it around if he continues to throw the ball like this.

Luke Farrell Luke Farrell 6’4″ | 155 lbs | QB Corona del Sol | 2027 AZ was one of the standouts of the day, regardless of position, for me. With great length, he threw the ball downfield with ease. His smooth delivery created a really tight spiral and I thought he excelled when throwing the ball outside the numbers. Farrell is certainly confident in his arm and you could see him building off his good throws. There was a point where he had a couple of good throws in a row and a coach in attendance said something to him about it; he just gave a little smirk, stepped up, and delivered an even better ball up the sideline. At 6’3″ going into his sophomore season, Farrell is a player that coaches should be seriously watching.
Rylan Reyes Rylan Reyes 5’11” | 180 lbs | QB American Leadership Academy Queen Creek | 2026 State AZ was already a player who stood out to me at the PRZ Arizona Combine with his impressive build and immaculate form; come to find out, the most impressive part of Reyes’ day was something we didn’t see. I found out after the event that Reyes was dealing with the flu (was taken to the ER the following day) and had fought through it to compete at the combine. You would’ve never even known by watching him play, that’s an impressive level of toughness. Even with all of that, he still managed to run the fastest shuttle of any quarterback in attendance with a 4.40. Playing for an ALA Queen Creek team that just had its quarterback head to BYU to continue playing the position, Reyes is a player who could get a lot of attention quickly as the 2024 season rolls around.

Luke Berlin Luke Berlin 6’3″ | 170 lbs | QB Blue Ridge | 2026 State AZ was very impressive throwing the ball around at the PRZ Arizona Combine. With really nice length and an incredibly smooth delivery, Berlin looked very natural playing the position. Though his feet aren’t the fastest, I thought his footwork was great and he did a nice job of using his legs to drive his throw. At 6’2″ he has the size and a high release point to never really have to worry about the bigger players in the trenches. Coming off a season where he was two yards shy of 1,800, Berlin seems to have been working hard on his accuracy since the end of last season. I’d expect a much higher completion percentage and lower TD/INT ratio in his junior campaign.

Even though Roman Thuyns Roman Thuyns 5’9″ | 150 lbs | QB Willow Canyon | 2025 AZ was the shortest quarterback at the event at 5’9″, he made up for it with an incredibly solid build and a ton of explosion. Finishing just one hundreth of a second short of the fastest shuttle by a quarterback (4.41), you could see the twitch that Thuyns plays with. He has incredible form when delivering the football and there was a nice zip on his passes. That ability to drive the football had him looking really good when throwing the ball over the middle of the field. There’s no doubt that Thuyns raised his stock competing out there at the combine this past weekend. After averaging over 150 yards a game last season, he’s poised to make a big jump with the work he’s been putting in leading up to the 2024 season.

Hone Wray Hone Wray 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Estrella Foothills | 2025 State AZ showed why he earned second-team all-region honors last year for the 4A Copper Sky division. He’s got good size and moves nicely with impressive footwork. He was consistently accurate, which was no surprise following a year where he finished with a 61% completion percentage. Even though he has a bit of an elongated delivery, it didn’t seem to affect him at all on his way to 18 total touchdowns this past season. He seems locked in and ready for the season, performing really well at the PRZ Arizona Combine.

At 6’3″ 185 lbs while still only being a freshman, Paiden Cash Dalhuag was the biggest quarterback at the PRZ Arizona Combine. That size provided him with some natural arm strength that was very apparent when he threw the ball. What was even more impressive was his effortless touch on the deep ball. It was no trouble for him to get the ball outside the numbers and it was often a long arching throw with plenty of air under it, making it that much easier for the receivers to get ahold of. Playing for Highland, Dalhaug has all the tools he needs to develop into a really sturdy and productive quarterback at a high level.
