Farmer came out right away and made an impact for the defensive unit. He started Week 1 and never looked back. Like every young recruit there is going to be some learning curves but he’s handled everything well to this point. He’s working on his frame and while he’s still a bit undersized, he’s physical and can lay out big hits. He tracks the ball well and doesn’t over pursue. He isn’t the most explosive athlete on the field but he’s smart and knows his role. 87 tackles and 2 sacks as a freshman is a good start, but it’s also the way you look when you’re out there that matters. Farmer looks like he belongs and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Highlights
Lane is going to be a fun recruit to watch develop over the next 3 years. Right now, I’ve got him listed as a LB but he primarily played on the line this year. I have him at LB because I anticipate him being some sort of hybrid type player down the road. He’s too lengthy and explosive to keep just near the line of scrimmage, especially when he has the speed and length to cover. For his age, he’s well built and already ahead of the game in the weight room. Per his Twitter, he’s squatting 415, benching 225, and cleaning 225. 36 tackles, 4 TFLs, and 2 sacks is what he brought to the table as a freshman, but it’s safe to say his role will only grow as he does.
Barrett very quietly just had a great freshman year for Lafayette Jefferson and is going to get the spotlight he deserves. What he was able to do as a freshman and be so efficient with the ball is as promising of a future as anyone in the class so far. Barrett only started 5 games, but what he showed in those 5 games is worth highlighting. He’s a quick decision maker who knows where to go with the ball, where his outlets are, and does not turn the ball over. He throws as catch-able of a ball as you can get from a QB but doesn’t sacrifice any of his accuracy. 979 passing yards, 12 TDs, and he completed 64% of his throws while only throwing 1 interception. He’s young, he’s a bit raw, but he’s got the talent and football IQ to be successful for a long time.
The only freshman to letter for West Side this year, big things could be coming for Loggins down the road. He got his feet wet on both sides of the ball this year as well. He’s got soft hands and can guide the ball in through contact. He’s able to get open in intermediate routes and can change direction as well as anyone else on the field. Defensively, he’s fairly aggressive and seems to be his calling. He’s violent when he’s attacking the ball and has no issue coming up in run support. He’ll go for the strip and try getting the ball out if it’s not tucked away properly. Defensively, Loggins put up 24 tackles, 2 PBU’s, a forced fumble, and scored his first offensive touchdown. Loggins is a talented young player who I think could really blossom into a reliable piece for West Side and a gem for the right program when he graduates.
