Continue ReadingThe balls were flying and the score boards were lighting up in Week 6, and the results were some exceptionally dynamic and impressive performances in big wins across the state. As offensive systems continue to develop and fine tune their attacks in preparation for the rigors of a playoff run, these passers and pass receivers will figure heavily in their teams’ ultimate fortunes, and opposing defenders will be hard-pressed to negate their impacts. All of these offensive performers are trending upward in passing game production:
Jaizon Collins
Jaizon Collins
The Flyers seem to be hitting their offensive stride at just the right time of the season, and Collins’ emergence as a big-play threat capable of scoring from anywhere on the field has helped fuel that development. In Franklin County’s recent 60-13 win over North Oldham, he gathered in 3 pass receptions and turned all three into touchdowns, totaling 139 yards in the process. Currently totaling 7 receptions for the season and averaging just under 40 yards per reception, his ability to make the first defender miss in space–coupled with his exceptional straight line speed–have enabled him to reach the end zone on 4 of those catches and currently rank him 26th among all Class AAAA receivers. After playing predominantly on defense last season and contributing 24 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 1 interception (returned 46 yards for a touchdown), Collins clearly has the skill set and versatility to add offensive production to his prep resume and keep his 6-0 Flyers rolling toward the post-season.
In his first season as starter, DeLacey’s progressive development seems to be right on schedule after he turned in an exceptionally efficient and productive half of football during his Red Devils’ recent 62-6 blowout win over visiting Muhlenberg County. Completing 11 of 13 pass attempts for 239 yards and 3 touchdowns, his efforts included a 48-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and a 37-yard end zone strike in the second quarter en route to a 43-0 halftime score. Mechanically polished and an accurate passer whether launching from a traditional pocket or on the move, he has completed 101 of 152 pass attempts for 1,289 yards and 10 touchdowns in his 8 starts thus far. Currently the #6 passer in Class AAAAA and the 34th-ranked passer statewide averaging 184 yards per game, he also has contributed 4 touchdowns rushing and 233 total yards on 32 rushes. The 5-3 Red Devils are now on a 4-game winning streak with an open date in Week 7.
Houston Hodges
Houston Hodges
A tall and technically proficient passer with exceptional upside, Hodges is thriving in his second season as the Dragons’ starting signal caller after passing for 1,640 yards and 17 touchdowns as a sophomore. In his team’s decisive 50-16 win over visiting Clinton County, he completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 326 yards and 4 touchdowns, elevating the unit’s season average to 32.4 points per game (currently 9th in Class AA). With the ability to extend plays with his legs while maintaining a sound throwing posture, he has completed 85 of 138 pass attempts this season for 1, 155 yards and 8 touchdowns (9th in Class AA) while also picking up 51 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 successful two-point conversion on 28 rushes. Quarterbacking the #2 rushing offense in Class AA, Hodges exhibits increasing degrees of sophistication with play-action mechanics and route timing that are sure to elevate his stock with next-level scouts and programs.
Now in his third season as the Lions’ starting quarterback, Holbrook is exhibiting the developing vision, timing and accuracy to exploit all potential routes in the passing tree, and his ability to make plays with his legs drastically limits how opposing defenses can play him. In Boyd County’s 48-14 win over Greenup County, he completed 14 of 18 pass attempts for 229 yard and 3 touchdowns and added on 72 yards rushing and a fourth score on 9 carries. Currently averaging 250.7 total yards per game, he ranks 10th among Class AAAA passers with 79 completions on 110 attempts for 1,044 yards and 12 touchdowns while also ranking 22nd among all Class AAAA rushers with 460 yards and 8 touchdowns on 74 carries. On schedule to surpass 2,000 yards of total offense for the second consecutive season, Holbrook’s extensive experience, skill set and athleticism will continue to attract increasing next-level interest as his developmental trajectory continues to climb.
After devoting the majority of his offensive efforts to the demands of quarterbacking through most of this season, Moore’s athletic talents were on impressive display as a pass receiver most recently, as he caught 3 passes for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns in his Eagles’ 36-6 road win at East Jessamine. Also gaining 108 yards rushing and scoring 2 more touchdowns on only 4 carries, his ability to evade initial contact and accelerate quickly through even small gaps in defensive pursuit lanes make him equally dangerous as either a ball carrier or pass receiver. Currently the 27-ranked rusher in Class AAAAA with 741 yards and 6 touchdowns on 59 carries, his average of 12.6 yards per carry attests to his big-play ability, but he also projects favorably on the defensive side of the ball, where he has contributed 10 solo tackles, 12 assists, 2 tackles for loss and 1 interception. With the versatility to contribute in multiple roles at the next level, his skill set equips him well for early/immediate special teams consideration.
