Week two has come and gone and there were plenty of standout performers in the second week of the WV high school football season. Here are 16 athletes that stood out during week two of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1234064' first='AJ' last='Bart'] - Lincoln '26 QB

Lincoln 2026 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1234064' first='AJ' last='Bart'] makes his first appearance on our site with a big week two performance against Elkins. The sophomore quarterback has taken over the QB1 reins this season and has had a nice start to the 2023 campaign. Bart and the Cougars' passing attack were clicking Friday night in a 41-0 win. Bart threw for over 250 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game while finding several different receivers for scores. Although still developing, Bart is making steady improvements and is worthy of making our week two standouts list.

[player_tooltip player_id='450993' first='Brody' last='Whitehair'] - Fairmont Senior '25 QB

Junior QB [player_tooltip player_id='450993' first='Brody' last='Whitehair'] had a monster game in week two in a high scoring affair against Robert C. Byrd. The Polar Bears tallied 62 points with Whitehair accounting for 7 of those touchdowns. He was 9/14 for 246 yards and 5 touchdowns through the air. Whitehair also rushed for two scores on 4 carries for 33 yards bringing his total for the night to 7 touchdowns. The Polar Bears have had a big start to the season on offense due in large part to the quarterback play of Whitehair who will likely make this list again this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='865458' first='Chris' last='Ross'] - Mingo Central '24 QB

Mingo Central had a huge night on offense in a 61-6 dominant performance against Westside behind the play of senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='865458' first='Chris' last='Ross']. Ross was 13/19 for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns in the victory spreading the ball around to numerous fellow Miners. The senior QB threw the ball well rolling out and on the run showcasing his athletic ability and feet. With a new cast of faces for Mingo Central this season look for them to make a run in the Class AA playoffs.

[player_tooltip player_id='865701' first='Josh' last='Moody'] - Nitro '25 QB

We mentioned last week that junior Nitro QB reminded of former standout quarterback J.R. House and the very next week Moody broke House's single-game passing touchdown record. Moody had an unheard-of 11 touchdown passes against a very overmatched St. Albans team in an 84-6 blowout victory. Moody went 24/33 for 621 yards and the 11 scores breaking the previous record that former Nitro Wildcat J.R. House set in the 1998 state championship with 10. Through two games, Moody has 1,032 yards passing and 19 touchdowns which many QBs will not reach this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='865454' first='Matt' last='Frye'] - Scott '24 QB

Scott senior [player_tooltip player_id='865454' first='Matt' last='Frye'] makes back-to-back appearances in our weekly standouts list with another impressive performance in the Skyhawks' win over Wayne. Frye was 12/17 for 235 yards and two touchdowns through the air but made his mark on the ground this game as well. He rushed 6 times for 64 yards and another two touchdowns bringing his total to 4 for the night. In total, Frye had just under 300 total yards in the game and the Scott Skyhawks start the season unblemished behind the great play of Frye and Co.

[player_tooltip player_id='908000' first='Aidan' last='Burke'] - Mingo Central '26 WR/DB

A trio of Mingo Central Miners have made our week two standouts list and 2026 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='908000' first='Aidan' last='Burke'] is one of those three after a great week two game against Westside. Burke caught five passes for 143 yards and two scores in a 60-6 blowout victory. Burke earned our Fan Vote Preseason Player of the Year award for Class AA and he's backing that acclaim up with a game like this. The sophomore has a bright future and is currently ranked in the top 15 in our 2026 rankings.

[player_tooltip player_id='908993' first='David' last='Fennessy'] - Scott '25 LB

2025 Scott linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='908993' first='David' last='Fennessy'] terrorized the Wayne offense all night in their 26-16 hard-fought victory over the Pioneers. Fennessy racked up an astounding 20 tackles in the contest and was all over the field for four quarters. From watching his highlights from the game, Fennessy was sprinting to the ball on every play and crashed the edge very well from his outside linebacker spot. The 5'11 190 junior flashed good speed but also played with good physicality in run defense. Fennessy had one of the top defensive performances in the state so far in this young season.

[player_tooltip player_id='926948' first='Malaki' last='Sheppard'] - Mingo Central '24 WR

Another Mingo Central Miner who had a big game against Westside was 2024 receiver [player_tooltip player_id='926948' first='Malaki' last='Sheppard']. Sheppard is a new name to our radar and he had a great game on both sides of the ball making an impact on offense and defense. Sheppard had 4 receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns on offense but was just as good on defense. He had 9 tackles, 2 TFLs, and a fumble recovery that he returned 90 yards for his third score of the night. With a performance like that, he'll be a name that could enter our 2024 rankings in the future.

[player_tooltip player_id='865459' first='Chase' last='Massey'] - Winfield '24 QB

[player_tooltip player_id='865459' first='Chase' last='Massey'] and the Winfield Generals had a great bounce-back week against Herbert Hoover after a tough week one game against Hurricane. The Generals came out on top over a talented Herbert Hoover squad 35-22. Massey accounted for three touchdowns with two with his legs and one through the air. The speedy senior quarterback had 246 total yards and orchestrated the Winfield option offense well with his arm and legs.

[player_tooltip player_id='370479' first='Dane' last='Hatfield'] - Herbert Hoover '25 QB

Even in a loss, Herbert Hoover junior QB [player_tooltip player_id='370479' first='Dane' last='Hatfield'] did all he could to try to earn a victory in a comeback attempt. Hatfield also had a good night in the passing and running game like his counterpart [player_tooltip player_id='865459' first='Chase' last='Massey'] of Winfield. The 6'4 junior was 13/29 for 206 yards and two touchdowns while adding 96 yards and a touchdown on the ground behind a staggering 27 carries. Look for Herbert Hoover to get going in the coming weeks with a young but talented team.

[player_tooltip player_id='145663' first='Ian' last='Crookshanks'] - East Fairmont '24 QB

East Fairmont senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='145663' first='Ian' last='Crookshanks'] had a phenomenal night for the Bees and was great through the air and on the ground. Crookshanks scored 5 times in their 56-14 win over Grafton with three coming from his arm and two more with his legs. He was a perfect 8/8 for 201 yards and three touchdowns and also added two more rushing touchdowns. Crookshanks hit fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='893491' first='Avery' last='Brown'] for all three touchdown passes and the East Fairmont Bees got their first win of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='893491' first='Avery' last='Brown'] - East Fairmont '24 WR

Big 6'3 220 senior WR [player_tooltip player_id='893491' first='Avery' last='Brown'] was the recipient of three [player_tooltip player_id='145663' first='Ian' last='Crookshanks'] touchdown passes in East Fairmont's win over Grafton. Brown hauled in touchdown catches of 48, 26, and a big 86-yarder for 160 total yards. Brown had a very efficient game catching just three passes but all three went for touchdowns. Look for that tandem to put up some more big numbers throughout their senior seasons this year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1136967' first='Adam' last='Baisden'] - Logan '26 QB

Logan sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id='1136967' first='Adam' last='Baisden'] was actually benched in the second quarter of their win over Sissonville but the 2026 quarterback battled back and put together a very nice game for the Wildcats. After throwing an interception at the end of the first quarter, Baisden re-entered the game midway through the third and finished the night with 181 yards passing and four touchdowns. He even rushed for 9 yards and had 11 yards receiving too. It was great to see the young QB bounce back and not let the interception and benching affect him the rest of the game.

[player_tooltip player_id='907660' first='Brady' last='Green'] - Shady Spring '24 QB

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='907660' first='Brady' last='Green'] makes his first appearance in our weekly standouts behind a great game through the air and on the ground in a dramatic 28-27 win over Nicholas County. Green went 11 of 23 for 226 yards and three touchdowns through the air with zero interceptions on the night. However, he would also have a big game with his legs rushing for 102 yards on 15 carries bringing his total yards to over 300 for the game.

[player_tooltip player_id='866523' first='Corey' last='Lyons'] - Weir '24 RB

The Weir Red Riders battled against a talented Toronto (OH) squad and were victorious in large part due to senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='866523' first='Corey' last='Lyons']' big night. The 2024 athlete carried the ball 26 times for 131 yards and two scores after battling back from a first-half injury. Toronto had a big defensive line and front 7 but Lyons was able to grind out a solid effort on the ground in a big win for the Weir Red Riders who start the season 2-0 and looking for a consecutive playoff appearance.

[player_tooltip player_id='866254' first='Malachi' last='Thompson'] - Nitro '26 WR

The Moody to Thompson touchdown connection has been extremely deadly for opposing defenses thus far through two weeks of the season. After a big week one performance and making our first standouts list, sophomore Nitro WR [player_tooltip player_id='866254' first='Malachi' last='Thompson'] had an even bigger week two. The 2026 prospect had 256 yards receiving and an incredible 5 touchdowns through the air in a 84-6 romping of St. Albans. That brings his two week total to 411 yards and 8 touchdowns in a record setting Nitro offense.

Week two has come and gone and there were plenty of standout performers in the second week of the WV high school football season. Here are 16 athletes that stood out during week two of the season.
