The Jersey Shore AYF All-Stars have been a dominant force over the better part of the last decade, having won the AYF All-Star tournament five times. More than that, the 14U team is the reigning back-to-back-to back National Champions and this past weekend they took their first steps towards championship number six. The Quarterback group was the smallest position to try out, but there were some dudes that clearly separated themselves.
From an athleticism standpoint, Asbury Park’s Weaver was on another level than the other signal callers in attendance. A reclassed kid, he’s every bit of the 6-foot-2 and 160 pounds he’s listed at and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was actually taller and heavier. He’s the type of kid you notice right away because he’s taller than most and carries himself with some swag. Also a talented basketball player, he has a long delivery and doesn’t throw the prettiest pass in the world, but his accuracy was pretty good. Moved very fluidly when having to throw on the run. Best way to sum it up for those who are unfamiliar with Zymere Weaver Zymere Weaver 6’2″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ : I’d trust him to make a big play happen late in a tie game. One way or another, he’ll get it done.
The other quarterback that was noticeably head and shoulders above the rest was Berkeley’s Rahmir Rivera Rahmir Rivera 5’8″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ . He consistently threw the prettiest deep ball out of all the quarterback’s at the tryout and left a lasting impression on kids who were seeing him throw for the first time. Rivera returned to play for Berkeley this year after a few seasons with the Brick City Lions, winning an AYF National Championship a year ago. Rivera has slimmed down a bit since I last saw him play live and is starting to develop nicely. He told me he “doesn’t really” train with a QB-trainer, but I would have sworn he did. He has a lot of the quarterback fundamentals down at this point and has a bright future–as long as he continues to grow taller.
Highlights
Out of the quarterback’s at the tryout, we’ve covered the best athlete ( Zymere Weaver Zymere Weaver 6’2″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ ) and the best pure-passer ( Rahmir Rivera Rahmir Rivera 5’8″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ ), but what about the quarterback with the biggest upside? That distinction goes to Jackson’s Tyler Hunter Tyler Hunter 6’1″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ . Jackson is a run-heavy team with the talented Ca’Si Thomas Ca’Si Thomas 5’9″ | 160 lbs | RB NJ in the backfield, so passing the ball is an afterthought for the Jaguars. For better or for worse, that shows in Hunter’s skillset because his throwing motion leaves a lot to be desired. Yet, somehow he throws a beautiful spiral. Watching game film, he’s also a threat to keep the ball and run it himself. He’s a taller, longer kid that also plays basketball and runs track. If he can get his throwing motion figured out, there’s no reason Hunter can’t be playing some level of college football down the line.

Additional Quarterback Tryout Notes
Derek Grasso Derek Grasso 5'7" | 135 lbs | QB NJ | Middletown – Was certainly shorter than Weaver and Hunter–and possibly Rivera too–but stood out a little bit. Threw a nice deep ball but didn’t have the arm strength or overall ability as the other three showed at the tryout. Once Grasso tacks on a few more inches and can stand up straight in the pocket, rather than banding his plant foot to be able to throw the ball over the line of scrimmage, we’ll get a better look at his true ability.
