A talented runner who was used in the varsity rotation last fall at St. Thomas Aquinas is Ca’si Thomas. Thomas’ running style is one that I would immediately say is violent and you can notice it within the first few steps. Even as a freshman we see that he has the speed to outrun an entire defense. A disciplined runner beyond his years, Thomas knows to run inside-out as he tries to work through the edges and gets his legs up enough to break the subpar tackles. Areas of his game I wish to see Thomas feature on his next film update are him in pass protection and used as a receiver. Additionally, I urge him to lower his pad level as he works through the early layers of the opposing defense.

One of the running backs I’ve seen play the most times out of anyone in this write up,

showed up and showed out in a big way. The well-balanced back was a standout for Jackson and the New Jersey AYF 14U All-Stars this past year, solidifying himself as the premier 2028 back down the shore. Watching him compete against some of the other top backs from North Jersey, South Jersey and beyond showed that he’s not just good for the shore–he’s good, good. Ran a 5.08 in the forty and finished in the top four of every other testing category. He’s always showed the ability to tote the rock up the middle and out on the edge, but at camp he also displayed the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield–which is something I hadn’t seen him do much of, until this point. I was really interested to see how Thomas stacked up against more competition–and he passed the test with flying colors.

Another one of the more complete running backs in New Jersey for the class of 2028. I know it’s high praise, but I see a lot of Emmitt Smith in the way he runs the ball. Thomas is listed at the same heigh as Emmitt was (5-foot-9) and runs with the same mix of speed, balance and power. Thomas only needs a crease and he’ll be able to explode through the hole. His balance after contact, is amongst the best I’ve seen in the state.

Thomas was the top back I saw at the tryouts, which is saying a lot considering the talent of the skill guys that showed out in the last two sessions of the day. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds (size not verified) I loved how smooth his game was. Very little, if any, wasted motion when going through bag drills. Effortlessly shifted his weight during cuts, constantly stayed lowed and was able to easily move through bags. You wouldn’t think it just look at him because he’s well-proportioned, but he generated a lot of power in his lower half. Looked really impressive in plyometric drills. Though my biggest take away, was his explosion in space. The type of back that can go 0-60 in just a few steps.
