than the naked eye might initially catch – and thus make him a candidate to have a breakout campaign and a bump in the rankings next time out. DeLuca accelerates very well off of his plant foot, propelling himself with a burst to gain yardage. He is also a tough one to bring down, especially when you try to tackle him high given that he is listed as a 210lb back. DeLuca also has a deadly combination of big, strong powerful legs that match with a stiff arm. A threat out of the backfield on screens, he is good at baiting-or-waiting in order to lull the defenders to sleep and make plays. In addition to this, DeLuca has very good vision in the open field, cutting across almost at will. To conclude, DeLuca has also shown to be a capable pass protector, working and grinding, rather than delivering a shot and being done with his block.

A new name on the list for me,

stepped up as the lead back for an 8-4 Don Bosco in 2024 and did not disappoint. Dante may be the biggest, most intimidating running back in the state. A true old school, power back, nothing impressed more than seeing defenders bounce off of Dante as he made his way downfield unfazed. It takes a swarm of defenders to bring Dante to the ground, as arm tackles are broken through easily and attempted tackles up high always end in disaster.
Don’t assume Dante is strictly a bruiser, however. He demonstrated throughout the 2024 season that he is still elusive enough to make guys miss and can quickly change directions to find the open space. Dante is a reliable back that is only going to get better his senior year. He rushed for 892 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, but I expect him to cross the 1000 yard mark next year. I think Dante is one of those RBs that’s not being recognized enough and deserves way more credit for what he accomplished this past season.

It seems as though Don Bosco did try to apply the approach I predicted in my championship game preview by deploying a balanced attack. The beneficiary of this was Dante DeLuca. The junior tailback was given 14 totes that produced 52 yards and a score. DeLuca also caught 4 balls that produced 43 additional yards. In all, DeLuca finished the game tied for first in touches and second in yards from scrimmage.
There is something motivating about defeat, especially in a tight game that got away late. DeLuca will have the opportunity to do something about that, as he just completed his junior year with 193 carries for 892 yards and 15 scores. He will be motivated like all hell to win the big one next year.
