The Heritage Hall Chargers came into this season as the favorite to repeat their 3A crown and after a month of football, nothing has changed that. The Chargers have been dominant so far this season and they find themselves in arguably the toughest district in Class 3A. In addition to the Chargers sitting at number one, this district currently has four other teams in the top ten rankings. Only four will make it to the playoffs so that tells us one of those teams currently ranked will head to basketball and wrestling early. The Chargers are unlikely to be one of those teams.
The Chargers are 4-0 so far this season and the only game that provided a scare to Heritage Hall came in week two when they beat 4A’s perennial power Clinton 50-43. But the final score doesn’t tell the full story of that game. Heritage Hall was absolutely rolling until quarterback and OU commit Andy Bass Andy Bass 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK missed the second quarter with an injury. Clinton mounted a comeback with Bass out and it was back and forth from there in the second half. The Chargers avenged their only loss from last year’s state championship season.
This year’s Heritage Hall team certainly appears to be a squad that could raise another gold ball. Offensively, it’s hard not to say everything starts and ends with Bass at quarterback. He’s truly one of the best athletes on the football field every time he steps on the field. But Bass isn’t alone on offense. He has a very strong offensive line and some really good skill players, that has allowed him to put up some monster numbers. Defensively, the Chargers have been stingy on that side of the ball. But as the district schedule heats up, they will be tested more and more.
Marlow, Sulphur, Plainview and Pauls Valley all find themselves in the top ten and they are all on the upcoming schedule for the defending champs. This week, Heritage Hall will square off with #9 Pauls Valley on Thursday night. Just like the Chargers, Pauls Valley has a quarterback that can beat defenses with his arm and his legs so that will be a challenge for the Chargers. The Panthers are also coming off a loss against Marlow last week so this is going to be a team that has their back against the wall and can’t afford many more district losses.
HERITAGE HALL’S PLAYERS TO WATCH
Heritage Hall has only played four games but in all four games, senior quarterback and OU commit Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK has been one of the best players in the state. It didn’t take long for Bass to be added to our PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year watchlist and he’s continued to back up that hype with his play over the last few weeks. Bass is committed to OU to play running back and he’s shown his playmaking ability in the running game already this fall. But teams shouldn’t think he’s one-dimensional because he’s been able to carve up defenses with the passing game as well. We’re only a month in but Bass is one of the best in Oklahoma.
Highlights
The state’s 2026 class is getting deeper and deeper and Heritage Hall’s Jerrod Williams Jerrod Williams 5’11” | DB Heritage Hall | 2026 State OK is one of the standouts that shined last year as a freshman. Williams most notably led the team in tackles during their state title win over Metro Christian. Since that title game, we’ve gotten a chance to see Williams a handful of times in person with the pads on and in 7v7 competition. He’s a really good corner that does a great job in 1 on 1 situations. Earlier this year, he was matched up against really good players on the other side and held his own. Williams has a bright future on the defensive side of the ball.
Like we said with Bass, we’re only a month into the season but senior Jordyn Harris Jordyn Harris 6’1″ | 165 lbs | DB Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK looks like he might be one of the best, if not the best two-way players in Class 3A this season. Harris is a big play threat on the offensive end of the field, a lockdown corner on defense and he’s also made plays for the Chargers in the return game. Bass is electric with the football but him having a playmaker like Harris feels like a cheat code for this Heritage Hall offense. Harris has had a great start to his senior season and his recruitment has continued to gain some momentum over the last few months.
In addition to Harris, the Chargers also have fellow senior Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6’0″ | 175 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK at the wide receiver position to make plays. We first got a chance to see Smith in person last season and he had a strong performance in their win over Millwood. Smith is once again one of the top playmakers on the offensive side of the ball for the Chargers. But just like Harris, he’s turned around and been a ball hawk on the defensive side. This is a versatile player that can play a variety of positions on the football field. He’s also been a standout on the basketball floor. Needless to say, he’s a fantastic athlete.
We’ll continue to fight this fight that Heritage Hall senior defensive lineman Zavier Freeman Zavier Freeman 6’2″ | DL Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK is one of the best in the state’s 2024 class. He does not have the prototypical size so his recruitment hasn’t been as noteworthy as some others at his position. But throw on the tape, see the kid in person and you see a player that has a major impact on the game. And college coaches learned the hard way with his older brother Gavin that he shouldn’t have been overlooked. While they play a different position, we won’t be surprised to see Zavier proving a lot of people wrong at the next level. Wherever that is.
