Winfield’s new QB1 is transferring in from Wake Forest HS (NC) and should raise the ceiling of the Generals’ 2023 team. The Marshall University legacy picked up an offer from the in-state Thundering Herd back in June which tells you the talent level of the 2024 QB. Massey played in just 5 games as a junior at Wake Forest HS so it’s going to be fun to see just how good he is for his senior season. Massey is a very athletic option and a true dual-threat quarterback that should fit perfectly into Winfield’s offense if they choose to run the same scheme as they did in 2022. We ranked Massey as the 24th overall player in the 2024 class and the #5 ranked QB. As more film comes out and we get to see him in action in WV that number could really increase in our future updates.
Jayce Miller Jayce Miller 6’0″ | 170 lbs | LB Winfield | 2024 State WV mans one of the middle linebacker and tight end spots for the Winfield Generals and did good things at both spots as a junior in 2022. I like his college outlook more as a linebacker where he was stout as a junior. Miller has the speed and athleticism to drop into coverage or rush the passer and even saw some reps as a running back. He has a thick build that serves him well in run defense which allows him to be a good tackler. Miller’s strength was also on display when playing tight end where he was able to physically impose defenders at times in the run game. That kind of versatility makes him a very valuable player for Winfield and Miller should have a big senior season for the Generals.
Caleb Kuhl Caleb Kuhl 6’2″ | 225 lbs | DL Winfield | 2024 State WV is a very tenacious defensive lineman for the Generals that is really fun to watch. If you can put 30 more pounds on him the ceiling is extremely high. Kuhl is a little slight right now for a defensive lineman but I love the way he plays the game of football. He tees off on offensive lineman and goes full-speed from snap to whistle. Kuhl is very quick off the ball and penetrates very consistently. He’s also very physical and always fighting off blockers and doing everything he can to get to the ball. I was very impressed with his work on special teams and Kuhl blocked several punts last season. Winfield also uses him on the offensive line and you can tell he just loves the physicality of football. I love his energy and effort and he will be a steal for whichever college gets him. Kuhl was a Class AA Honorable Mention All-State performer in 2022 and ranks as our #17 defensive lineman in the 2024 class.
K-Juan Pearson K-Juan Pearson 5’11” | 180 lbs | RB Winfield | 2024 State WV was one of Winfield’s talented wing-backs last season and was their speed option at running back. Pearson ripped off several big runs in 2022 and was at his best on tosses and outside runs. With his speed, Pearson can get to the edge and hit the corner in a hurry. Once he’s out in space he’s tough to catch up to and run down. Pearson rushed for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns as a junior and should see that production increase mightily in his senior season. Pearson can also line up in the slot and run routes when Winfield does throw the ball. He is also a talented defensive back on defense where he could also play in college. Look for him to have a big senior season on a reloaded Winfield team.
I really like the future outlook for 2025 TE/OLB Toby Laughery Toby Laughery 6’4″ | 225 lbs | TE Winfield | 2025 State WV who is a very athletic and long prospect. Laughery started at tight end and outside linebacker for the Generals as a sophomore and showed very good things at both positions. He has the height at 6’4 and as he continues to add weight and grow into his body he has the potential to be a high-level player. You don’t often see a 6’4 205 linebacker covering slot receivers as well as Laughery did as a sophomore but he matches up very well with them athletically. He can run and is nimble for his size which allows him to cover down the field. On offense, Laughery still could add 30 pounds to be his best at the tight end position and help him in the blocking game but when you’re athletic as he is you can use him a lot in the passing game. The Generals don’t throw the ball a ton but the passing game may open up more with transfer QB Chase Massey Chase Massey 6’2″ | 175 lbs | ATH Winfield | 2024 State WV coming into the program so Laughery may see more touches there. He ranks as our #4 overall tight end in the 2025 class.
Highlights
Tre Tanner Tre Tanner 5’9″ | 150 lbs | DB Winfield | 2025 State WV is a speedy little 2025 defensive back for the Winfield Generals that put together a nice sophomore campaign. At 5’8 150 he needs to continue adding weight and getting stronger but Tanner didn’t let that stop him from matching up physically last season. He is super quick and fast and performed very well in pass coverage as a young defensive back. Tanners closes and breaks on balls very well and showed he’s physical when breaking up a pass. Even as a smaller DB, Tanner tackled well and did a nice job of going low and wrapping up bigger athletes than him. The future is very bright for this rising junior and a name that will likely enter our 2025 rankings in the next update.
2026 athlete Matthew Daly Matthew Daly 5’7″ | 145 lbs | DB Winfield | 2026 WV primarily played on special teams as a freshman last season for the Generals but should see a bigger role moving forward. Daly was a very good bullet/alley and gunner on the kickoff and punt teams and covered them very well. He even saw some action as a returner and his speed allowed him to rip off some big returns. Daly saw some time on defense at corner and nickel on a 10-win Winfield team which was impressive to see for a young player. Daly also had reps at running back and as he continues to grow physically he should be one of their featured backs in time. Daly is going to be a very quick and fast athlete and the ceiling appears to be high for the young 2026 General.
