There is an obvious hold-up, as he currently finds himself without an opportunity thus far. Hayden Johnson Hayden Johnson 6’1″ | 195 lbs | QB Manheim Township | 2024 State PA is one of the prospects on this list that should hardly worry. Considering how tough it is for quarterbacks to hear the call, considering size, some coaches surely want to wait until Johnson shows up at camp to finally pull the trigger. Luckily, Johnson has already checked off numerous boxes. He’s going to impress coaches with his incredible accuracy and unwavering confidence. This ones only a matter of time. Expect high-level FCS programs to pull the trigger first.
Highlights
A busy April saw Top 100 prospect Camron Watkins Camron Watkins 6’2″ | 190 lbs | ATH Bald Eagle Area | 2024 State PA take Spring Game visits to Maryland, Lehigh, and Bucknell University. I’m just thankful that there are programs actually aware of this young man’s abilities at this point. Not too many coaches are even familiar with Bald Eagle Area HS when I mention the program. So seeing his recruitment on par with what we expect is promising. Arguably a top-five athlete in his class, the highly-versatile prospect should leave potential suitors drooling at his capabilities. WR and TE are certainly future options for the young man. His 6’2, 205 frame leaves the door open for LB or EDGE even. He reminds me a ton of Kaeden Singleton Kaeden Singleton 6’2″ | 225 lbs | DL Canon-McMillan | 2024 State PA . We’ll see what the next months are like for Watkins.
Braylon Thomas Braylon Thomas 6’2″ | 180 lbs | ATH Union Area | 2024 State PA jumped from unranked to Top 100 prospect after I witnessed how special of an athlete he is at Cumberland Valley this past December. I’ve checked in on his socials numerous times, things are generally quiet when scoping what recruiting interest has surrounded him at this point. Quiet socials are hardly an indicator of quiet recruitment, yet I get the feeling we would have heard something by now. The top 10 athlete is versatile in his own right. Obvious quarterback prospect who will have to be willing to field potential position swaps at the next level. As my ranking suggests, he should be more than capable considering the skillset he brings to the table. FCS programs should key in on this young man, so long as he camps well.
Isaiah Brown Isaiah Brown 6’2″ | 200 lbs | WR Armstrong | 2024 State PA saw Spring game and Junior Day invites out of Temple, Lafayette, UPenn, and Western Michigan University thus far this year. Brown, one of my favorite pass-catchers in this class, should hear back from FCS programs sooner rather than later. He’s the type of prospect that is going to have to test well in front of coaching staffs. His build intrigues, yet his thick frame might entice college coaches to see his potential elsewhere, understandably so. He’s going to need to run very well to stay at WR. Combine testing will be an indicator of his future. Nonetheless, I’d have a hard time imagining FCS schools not favoring his potential over others in the state.
Keeping up with the interior defender out of Imhotep, David Johnson David Johnson 6’0″ | 265 lbs | DL Imhotep Charter | 2024 State PA has taken visits to James Madison and Delaware University so far this year. I’m sure Johnson has flirted with other potential suitors who may have visited the school in the past two weeks, yet I can’t say for certain. An integral piece to the front seven that dominates nearly every Friday in the Fall, David Johnson David Johnson 6’0″ | 265 lbs | DL Imhotep Charter | 2024 State PA should hear from coaches who are excited about his tape. His size at the position might bring up concerns strictly from G5 programs and up, he’ll have to camp and win against linemen much bigger than he is. I have no doubt he’s more than capable of doing so.
The absence of offers for many of the prospects on this list leaves me scratching my head at times, especially concerning Landon Kennel Landon Kennel 6’3″ | 200 lbs | WR Manheim Township | 2024 State PA out of Manheim Township. Kennel and Johnson caught the right attention a couple weeks back, with Torrey Smith and other prominent football coaches singing their praises after dominating a local 7v7 event. Overt athleticism and confidence, mirrored by his quarterback who is equally confident, also mentioned on this list above. 6’3, a 205-pound frame that he can lift, Landon Kennel Landon Kennel 6’3″ | 200 lbs | WR Manheim Township | 2024 State PA is the prototypical “wow at an event” type of prospect. Again, many might not know of his tremendous skill set and production. He’s going to have to prove he can play with some of the best DBs in the state. My ranking suggests he can. FCS programs should be pulling the trigger on this young man right now.
I’m ready to launch Mekhi Wharton Mekhi Wharton 6’5″ | 215 lbs | QB Neumann-Goretti | 2024 State PA into the top five, even top three quarterback discussion. The lack of reps and constant moving of homes is far in the past. Mekhi Wharton Mekhi Wharton 6’5″ | 215 lbs | QB Neumann-Goretti | 2024 State PA is now coming off a State Title run that ended at Cumberland Valley, after just his first year under center for Neumann-Goretti. A real 6’5, a real frame that can absorb contact in the pocket. Real downfield accuracy, he’s got weapons that demand the rock down the sideline, he’s got the rocket to hit them 40+ yards downfield. I still won’t be surprised to hear Power Five programs bite on him this Summer after seeing him at camp. That might be a high bar I’ve set, I’m willing to stick with it. The floor, I know for a fact that several FCS programs have his name on the board. We’ll see how things play out.
