Continue ReadingWith the 2022 high school football season behind us, it is now time to take a look back at a very exciting season. The city of Lexington has been growing in talent on the football field and there was an abundance of it on display this past season. With that being said, I have decided to focus on the best players in the city from the past season for my 2022 Lexington All-City Team. To kick things off, here are my top players in Lexington on the offensive side of the ball from the 2022 season.
This selection was a no brainer as Cutter Boley Cutter Boley 6’5″ | 200 lbs | QB Lexington Christian Academy | 2024 State KY is one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the entire country in his class. Boley had an incredible first season with the Eagles, completing 254/400 passes for 3,901 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He has incredible arm strength, showing the ability to lead his receivers down the field in the deep passing game and zip passes into tight windows in the short/intermediate passing game. Boley also has great pocket mobility, moving around the pocket to avoid pressure while also showing the ability to escape the pocket and make throws on the run. Cutter also has shown the ability to use his legs to make plays on the ground when needed, running the ball 48 times for 102 yards and six touchdowns this past season. Boley has a long list of Power 5 offers and I expect that list to continue to grow as he is a truly special talent.
Jeremiah Mundy Jeremiah Mundy 6’2″ | 210 lbs | RB Bryan Station | 2023 State KY is a player that truly jumped onto my radar quickly this past season. He played a key role in a very successful season for the Defenders, finishing the year with 181 carries for 1,200 yards and 20 touchdowns. Mundy is a downhill runner with the ability to hit the running lane quickly and run through tackles without breaking stride. He has also shown the speed to run away from the defense once he hits the open field. In the passing game, Mundy finished the season with five receptions for 39 yards. Jeremiah currently holds offers from Wilmington College, Goode Elite Prep, Roseville Athletic Academy, Community Christian, Aces Elite, and Butler Community College, and I can see him developing into a very successful running back at the next level.
One of my favorite stories of the season is how Lexington Catholic kicker Max DeGraff Max DeGraff 5’11” | 155 lbs | K Lexington Catholic | 2023 State KY turned into a dominant receiver this season. DeGraff had an outstanding senior year, finishing with 64 receptions for 1,425 yards and 21 touchdowns. He is a very dangerous deep threat, using his speed to run right by defensive backs. DeGraff also showed tremendous ability after the catch, using his speed and elusiveness in the open field to turn short passes into big gains. While he stood out as a receiver, DeGraff still proved to be one of the best kickers in the state connecting on 58/59 PAT attempts and 4/6 field goals. Max is committed to Kentucky where he will likely be a kicker but he could play receiver if ever asked to do so.
Parker Chaney Parker Chaney 6’0″ | 180 lbs | ATH Lexington Christian Academy | 2024 State KY made an impact on both sides of the ball for LCA this season but I liked what he did on offense at receiver the most. Chaney finished his junior year with 83 catches for 1,175 yards and seven touchdowns. He is a smooth route runner with the ability to create separation with the breaks in his routes. Chaney also has very reliable hands in contested catch situations and has the speed and elusiveness to pick up solid yards after the catch. Parker also showed some promise as a ball carrier, running the ball 14 times for 40 yards and a touchdown this season. Chaney currently holds one offer from Eastern Kentucky but I expect more to come his way going into his senior year as he is a Division I caliber talent and has been receiving a ton of interest from college programs.
Highlights
Another LCA wide receiver that stood out to me this season was Evan Brown Evan Brown 6’0″ | 160 lbs | ATH Lexington Christian Academy | 2023 State KY . Although Brown caught my attention initially as a defensive back this season, he made a huge impact on the offensive side of the ball this year. Brown had an outstanding senior season, catching 60 passes for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns. He is a very dangerous deep threat, using his speed to run by opposing defensive backs. Brown also does a great job of looking in passes over his shoulder and catching the ball without breaking stride. Brown is also a good route runner and has the ability to take short passes for a big gain or touchdown at any given moment. He also proved to be a dangerous weapon on special teams, returning two punts for touchdowns this season. Evan currently holds an offer from Campbellsville but I expect more to come his way as he has the talent to play on either side of the ball at the next level.
Thomas Howard Thomas Howard 6’3″ | 215 lbs | TE Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY came into the season as my top tight end in the class of 2023 in the state of Kentucky and he proved that he deserved that ranking during his senior year. Howard played a big role in the Broncos’ 5A State Championship run, catching 19 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He has shown the ability to run routes like a receiver and pose as a deep threat down the seam. Howard also has shown the ability to turn up the field and use his speed to pick up extra yards after the catch. I also liked what I saw from Howard as a blocker as he showed the ability to get out in the open field as a lead blocker and pick up blocks in open space. Once he got to his man, he did a great job of running his feet through contact to drive them out of the play. Thomas is committed to play baseball at Louisville but he could very easily be a Power 5 tight end if he were to have a sudden change of heart.
I decided to add an “Athlete” slot to this team for a player that does it a little bit of everything for his team. Cole Colony Cole Colony ATH Lexington Dunbar | 2023 State KY fits that description perfectly as he was a key piece of Dunbar’s offense this season. Colony started off the season at running back, finishing his senior year as the team’s leading rusher with 159 carries for 1,029 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is a hard runner that has the strength and contact balance to break tackles without losing stride. Colony also has the speed to run away from the defense and elusiveness to make defenders miss in the open field. He also caught six passes for 68 yards. Due to an injury at the position, Colony returned to his original position of quarterback during the regular season, completing 94/160 passes for 1,266 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Colony also played a role on defense as a defensive back but he looks the best with the ball in his hands on offense in my eyes. His play earned him District Player of the Year honors this season. Cole currently holds an offer from Centre but I can see more coming his way as he has the ability to play multiple positions at the next level.
Demeco Kennedy Demeco Kennedy 6’3″ | 270 lbs | DL Frederick Douglass | 2024 State KY came into this season as one of my top offensive linemen in the state and he continued to impress during his junior year. He played a key role in the Broncos’ championship run, anchoring the offensive line from the left tackle spot. In the run game, Kennedy is a mauler, exploding out of his stance and driving his man down the field. He finishes his blocks through the whistle, resulting in several pancake blocks. He also does a great job of getting to the second level and picking up blocks in the open field. In pass protection, Kennedy has great footwork and does a good job of mirroring pass rushers off the edge. Demeco has a long list of Power 5 offers and I expect more to come his way as he is an impressive player that could play on either side of the line, whether it be on offense or defense, at the next level.
Another junior offensive lineman that has been high on my radar for a while now is LCA’s Garrison McKinney Garrison McKinney 6’2″ | 280 lbs | OL Lexington Christian Academy | 2024 State KY . McKinney continued to impress this season as he a led an impressive LCA offensive line unit. He started the season at tackle where he thrived but made the move to center during the regular season and stayed there throughout the playoffs. McKinney plays with a ton of physicality as a run blocker, exploding out of his stance and driving his man down the field. At center, he did a great job of snapping the ball quickly while stepping to his man and keeping his feet running through contact. In pass protection, he showed the ability to pick up stunts and blitzes while protecting his inside gap. Garrison currently holds an offer from Eastern Kentucky but I expect more to come his way going into his senior year as he is a Division I caliber offensive lineman with a ton of position versatility.
Joining McKinney on the Eagles’ offensive line was senior Max Ishmael Max Ishmael 6’4″ | 310 lbs | OL Lexington Christian Academy | 2023 State KY . Ishmael lined up at guard and showed a lot of promise in the run game. He moves very well for his size, showing the ability to pull and get around the edge as a lead blocker while destroying anyone in his path. Ishmael also does a great job of running his feet through contact and driving his man down the field, finishing his blocks through the whistle. He also does a great job of getting to the second level and picking up blocks in open space. Max is committed to Kentucky as a Preferred Walk-On where I can see him developing into a solid offensive lineman.
Highlights
Another interior offensive lineman that caught my attention this season is junior Joe Schlarman Joe Schlarman 6’2″ | 245 lbs | OL Lexington Catholic | 2024 State KY from Lexington Catholic. Schlarman played a key role for the Knights this year as their starting center. He does a great job at communicating before the snap and picking up stunts and blitzes. In pass protection, Schlarman has very good footwork and does a good job of protecting his inside gap at all times. Schlarman is a physical blocker in the run game, driving his man down the field and finishing his blocks through the whistle. He has a quick first step out of his stance, snapping the ball quickly while stepping to his man and keeping his feet running through contact. While Joe doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect some to come his way going into his senior year as he has been receiving a nice amount of college interest and has the talent to play at the next level.
Wrapping up my Lexington All-City Offense is Bryan Station offensive lineman Gary McCauley Gary McCauley 6’3″ | 240 lbs | OL Bryan Station | 2024 State KY . McCauley had an impressive junior year, playing a key role in a very successful season for the Defenders. He lines up at left tackle and does a great job of protecting his quarterback’s blind side. McCauley has impressive footwork and does a great job of continuing to work to get back in his pass sets to mirror opposing pass rushers off the edge. On many occasions, McCauley used his physicality to drive defenders out of the picture before they even got close to the quarterback. In the run game, McCauley does a great job of exploding out of his stance and driving his man off the line of scrimmage. Gary doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come his way going into his senior year as he has received some college interest and definitely has the talent to play somewhere at the next level.
