It was absolute domination from start to finish. On offense they averaged over 40 points per game. They were a machine, which had fantastic playmakers all over the field. On the other side of the ball, their fast and physical defense was lockdown all year. They only gave up 17 points throughout their four playoff games, including only 7 to a Plainedge offense that averaged over 40 points per game. Take a look at some of their standout prospects from this season.
Top Performers
The super sophomore had another dominant season, this time with over 2,000 yards on the ground. His vision and cutting ability make him so dangerous along with his breakaway speed. Messina’s change of direction gave defenses nightmares in every game he played. He hits the hole very hard and effectively. Messina put on over 25 pounds of muscle compared to his freshman season, making him much more difficult to bring down.
Despite being a little undersized, Sands was a game-changer at middle linebacker. He has incredible instincts and was constantly able to track down the ball carrier. Sands was a very agile linebacker. He was able to slice through the opposition’s offensive line to come away with a ton of tackles for loss. He also showed his ability to drop back in pass coverage or be a solid QB spy.
Breakout players
He had a standout junior season after missing time as a sophomore. Tripptree has great footwork in the pocket and threw incredible deep balls to his fast wide receivers. In the Long Island Championship game, he was tested against a great Plainedge defense and he was borderline perfect in the first half. He made quick and smart decisions all afternoon. When facing a tough pass rush, he was calm, cool, and collective as he had an amazing championship performance.
Highlights
Anthony Morrione
Anthony Morrione
After a couple receivers graduated, Morrione became the go to target. He was a very smooth route runner with great athleticism. He showed his ability to jump high and come down with a 50/50 ball throughout the season. The yards after catch is where Morrione shines the most. He is one of the shiftiest receivers in Suffolk County and always made tacklers miss in open space
Stars ready to shine
Michael Sands
Michael Sands
The sophomore linebacker had a standout season. Similar to his brother, he has great instincts. Sands is one of the fastest linebackers and hits with a purpose. At 5’10 and 175 pounds, he has the opportunity to add more weight and become an even more effective linebacker. He has a great motor and showcased great vision against opposing offenses. With his brother graduating, he’ll take a larger role in the defense and continue to make plays.
Luke Hansen
Luke Hansen
One of the most athletic players on the roster, Hansen was a serious threat down the field in the passing game. He also was effective in special teams, returning the opening kickoff to the house in the Long Island championship game. At 6’1, his size and speed gave defenders trouble and now with Anthony Morrione graduating, he has an opportunity to get a lot more targets in this offense.
