It was not until recently that I started seeing Messina as more of a potential safety at the next level and it is part of the reason he jumps so high in these rankings – for a while he has been one of the more productive players from Long Island. However, the competition level isn’t great, a lot of his running back play is very impressive but an athlete of his caliber makes those plays fairly easily. It is his instincts and ball skills defensively that have really helped shape my evaluation of Messina. He is athletic enough to play either way but defensively he lives around the ball and sees things very well – without him at Safety Sayville doesn’t win the some of the close meaningful games they had this season.

The star from Sayville dominated for a third straight season. He had a fantastic year at running back, rushing for over 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was also the anchor of the Golden Flashes defense, as he came away with 60+ tackles and 6 interceptions. Messina’s athleticism is some of the best you’ll find on Long Island.

did what he does best and that’s take over a game on the ground. On a wet, rainy and windy afternoon, everyone knew Messina would get a heavy workload and the Colts still couldn’t stop him. He had a huge 57 yard touchdown where his vision and explosiveness was on full display. Messina has some of the best IQ out of any RB on Long Island and he made people miss in the open field with ease. What impressed me on a lot of his runs was his breakaway speed. Although the Colts defense is a little smaller, Hills West has a very fast group and Messina still flew by players and pulled off big runs.

It has been a special two years for the star running back from Sayville. The speed and instincts he possesses, has helped him thrive. He had over 2,000 yards last year and was taken out of the game usually by halftime. He breaks off a lot of big runs and he also became a physical runner in his sophomore year. All summer long he’s looked like one of the best athletes in the state. Messina will also be playing a lot of safety this year and will be a high level defensive back as well.

has made a name for himself as one of New York’s best players. And at the 7v7, it was evident that he was easily one of the most athletic players on the field. At running back he made an impact on his short routes and caught everything his way. Although plays were blown dead quickly, Messina showed his burst and acceleration after he caught passes and it was very impressive. But during these 7v7’s what Messina did on defense jumped out to me the most. He was going step for step with some of the best receivers on the island. He will be one of the best two way players in New York this upcoming season.

The super sophomore had another dominant season, this time with over 2,000 yards on the ground. His vision and cutting ability make him so dangerous along with his breakaway speed. Messina’s change of direction gave defenses nightmares in every game he played. He hits the hole very hard and effectively. Messina put on over 25 pounds of muscle compared to his freshman season, making him much more difficult to bring down.
