New year, new class, same results. For the ninth straight year, the Bixby Spartans played for a state championship in early December. For the eighth time in that span, they were raising a gold ball by the end of the night. Bixby took down Owasso in dominant fashion with a 69-6 beat down of the Rams underneath the lights of what has become their second home in Edmond at UCO. Bixby’s win gave them a fifth consecutive state championship and their first since moving up to 6A-1 after eight years of dominance in 6A-2.
The 63-point win in the title game was also the second biggest point differential in a championship game. Only Adair in 2015 won by more when they beat Haskell by 64 points. The Spartans came out swinging on Friday night and they didn’t stop swinging until the final buzzer sounded. These two teams met in the first game of the year back in August. Bixby was able to run away with it in the second half. This time around, it was a first quarter knockout.
The Spartans scored on their first drive. It took 48 seconds to go six plays and 80 yards and ended with a Connor Kirby Connor Kirby 6'2" | 190 lbs | ATH Bixby | 2023 State OK touchdown touchdown run. Owasso would answer with a 54-yard touchdown from Mason Willingham Mason Willingham 6'1" | QB Owasso | 2023 State OK just two minutes later but that would be the lone touchdown on the night from the Rams. Bixby added two more touchdowns on Kirby passes to Jakeb Snyder Jakeb Snyder 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Bixby | 2023 State OK and Luke Hasz Luke Hasz 6'4" | TE Bixby | 2023 State OK to lead 21-6 after one quarter. Three more touchdowns in the second quarter would put them up 42-6 at halftime after Kirby threw two more touchdowns to Dylan Hasz Dylan Hasz 6'0" | DB Bixby | 2023 State OK and Cale Fugate Cale Fugate 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Bixby | 2023 State OK and ran for another.
In the second half, the Spartans would add to the scoring with a fake punt near midfield as Cooper Parker Cooper Parker 5'11" | 205 lbs | LB Bixby | 2025 State OK found freshman Cord Nolan Cord Nolan 6'1" | 185 lbs | TE Bixby | 2026 State OK , who rumbled into the end zone. Senior running back Jersey Robb Jersey Robb 6'2" | 200 lbs | ATH Bixby | 2023 State OK would score another state championship touchdown. Luke Hasz Luke Hasz 6'4" | TE Bixby | 2023 State OK caught another touchdown early in the fourth quarter, this time from QB Austin Havens Austin Havens 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Bixby | 2023 State OK . And then Havens would find Christian Kaiser for the game’s final touchdown.
Bixby would out gain the Rams 518-178 in total offense. They would have over 300 yards passing and over 200 yards rushing and they would only allow 47 yards passing on the night. The one flaw for Bixby was on 3rd down as they were 1-9 on 3rd downs. It didn’t matter. They turned around and were 6-7 on fourth downs and kept drives alive all night long. There’s no doubt that the Rams weren’t close to being 100 percent but Bixby was clearly on a mission to make another loud statement to the rest of Oklahoma.
That statement is pretty simple. Any team, any class, anywhere, it doesn’t matter. Bixby has now won five straight titles. Eight of the last nine and they’ll go into next season looking for even more history. They can become the first school in state history to go to ten consecutive state championship games. It’s never happened before and at the rate we’re going now, Bixby might as well plan for another early December trip to Edmond, or wherever the 2023 championship game will be.
