Every single Monday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll get the week started with a look at the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. And this week, we have some absolutely great match-ups across the state. This week, our games are headlined by several marquee match-ups in Class 5A. That’s going to be the class to watch throughout week five as district play heats up. Check back every Monday as we break down the top ten games every single week during the 2022 regular season.
1) #6 McALESTER (4-0) AT #3 DEL CITY (4-0)
We mentioned how all eyes should be on Class 5A this week and it starts with the game of the week as #3 Del City hosts #6 McAlester. The Eagles have made an immediate impact dropping down from 6A-2 to 5A this fall. They have been dominant in the first month of the season but slowing down McAlester and star running back Erik McCarty Erik McCarty 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB McAlester | 2023 State OK will provide a new test. Del City has the best defense that McAlester has faced so far this season, with several D1 commits on that side of the ball like defensive lineman Jaedon Foreman Jaedon Foreman 6'4" | DL Del City | 2023 State OK (OSU) and defensive back Kanijal Thomas Kanijal Thomas 6'1" | DB Del City | 2023 State OK . (Kansas State) The winner of this match-up could be considered the favorite for the district but this is a district that also features top-ranked Coweta. Both teams are off to great starts and something will have to give when they go head to head this week. The biggest match-up to watch within the game will be McCarty going against Del City’s front seven.
2) #5 OWASSO (1-3) AT #4 MUSTANG (3-1)
It’s a top five match-up in Class 6A-1 as #4 Mustang hosts #5 Owasso. It’s a big district clash as the Broncos are coming off a big rivalry win over Yukon, while the Rams are looking to bounce back following a home loss to #1 Union. Mustang was able to snap a five game losing streak to the Rams last year and because of that, they had a better position when the playoffs rolled around. Mustang is determined to not only be considered the “best in the west” this year, but they want to be considered a serious state championship contender. Owasso’s defense will have to contend with a Mustang offense that has the ability to light up the scoreboard. Senior quarterback Tristen Russell Tristen Russell 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Mustang | 2023 State OK is coming off another strong performance in their win over Yukon. Not only is Russell one of the better quarterbacks in 6A-1, he’s surrounded by several playmakers at the wide receiver position that could provide many problems for the Owasso defense.
3) #8 PERKINS-TRYON (3-1) AT #3 METRO CHRISTIAN (5-0)
It will be a clash of styles in the best game in Class 3A this week as #3 Metro Christian welcomes #8 Perkins-Tryon to Tulsa. The Patriots have one of the best passing attacks in the state, regardless of class, led by senior quarterback Kirk Francis Kirk Francis 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Metro Christian | 2023 State OK . The senior QB has been considered one of the best quarterbacks in the 2023 class since his sophomore year and he’s taken his game to a new level this year by using every weapon on this Metro offense. It’ll be a clash of styles as they go head to head with a Perkins-Tryon offense that has an incredibly strong rushing attack, led by junior running back Tre Stevenson Tre Stevenson 6'0" | ATH Perkins-Tryon | 2024 State OK , who is quickly rising up the boards in the state’s 2024 class for running backs. The game plan will be simple for the Demons as they try to pull off the upset. They’ll want to keep the ball in Stevenson’s hands and out of Francis’ hands. And when Metro has it, Stevenson will also impact the game as a defensive standout as well.
4) #4 GUTHRIE (4-0) AT #10 PIEDMONT (4-1) (THURS.)
In yet another marquee match-up in Class 5A, #10 Piedmont will host #4 Guthrie. The Wildcats are off to a 4-1 start to their season and opened district play with a dominating win over Southeast. Guthrie had week four off after beating Tuttle in the final non-district game of the year. If you’re going to this game, plan to get there early because both of these teams are going to want to run the ball and if you’re 30 minutes late, the game will probably be in the second quarter and headed towards halftime. The Blue Jays are hoping to unleash senior running back Isaiah Hammons Isaiah Hammons 5'8" | RB Guthrie | 2023 OK , but if he can’t go, they showed in the win over Tuttle that they have a few guys who can fill that role. Piedmont has won four in a row after dropping their season opener against Noble. The Wildcats have the potential to have one of the top rushing attacks, not only in Class 5A, but in the state. They have a few playmakers that Guthrie will have to worry about containing.
5) #1 STILLWATER (4-0) AT #5 BOOKER T WASHINGTON (2-2)
It’s the top game in 6A-2 this week as top ranked Stillwater travels to Tulsa to face off with Booker T Washington. This game has the potential to be one of the highest scoring games in 6A-2 this week as both teams are absolutely on fire coming into this week. Stillwater made scoring 85 points look easy in week four and quarterback Gage Gundy Gage Gundy 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Stillwater | 2023 State OK has been outstanding so far this season. Meanwhile on the other side of the match-up, you have Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Booker T Washington | 2023 State OK coming off arguably his best game of his career in a win over Bartlesville. He threw for nearly 500 yards and six touchdowns. The Hornets appear to have bounced back from an 0-2 start and have a lot of momentum coming into this match-up. As if this match-up needed a little more juice to it, it’s also a rematch of last year’s first round match-up when Stillwater eliminated Booker T Washington from the 6A-2 playoffs. The winner here will be in the driver’s seat for the district crown.
6) #5 CLINTON (3-1) AT #9 ELK CITY (3-1)
In another playoff rematch from last year, it’s the top match-up in Class 4A this week as #9 Elk City plays host to #5 Clinton in a western Oklahoma showdown. These two 4A programs will meet for the third time in the last eleven months after meeting in district play and then again in the 4A semifinals. Clinton got the best of Elk City in both meetings and eventually captured the state championship. And we’ll admit that we were off on both of these teams coming into this season. We thought that they would take somewhat of a step back after losing key players like Caden Powell for Clinton and Daylan Thompson for Elk City. That simply has not been the case as both teams have gotten strong wins. The only losses were to marquee Class 5A programs who are in the top ten. The winner here has to be considered the favorite to capture the district crown. Elk City has certainly had this one circled since the end of last season while Clinton is determined to remain on top.
7) #6 BROKEN ARROW (1-3) AT #10 NORMAN NORTH (2-2) (THURS.)
Broken Arrow will travel to the west side of the state for the second consecutive week on a Thursday night. The Tigers got their first win of the season last week when they dominated Southmoore with a 63-7 victory. The Tigers were dominant in all three phases of the game and will look to take that momentum into this week’s Thursday night affair with Norman North. For the Timberwolves, they’re looking to bounce back after starting the season 2-0 but dropping their last two to Yukon and Bixby. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Bixby and then gave up 63 unanswered as Bixby rolled once again. Norman North now attempts to turn the page, facing a Broken Arrow team that is starting to figure out their identity after playing a very tough non-district schedule. This game will have plenty of playoff implications in November. Both teams expect to be participating in the playoffs and a win might provide the difference of hosting a playoff game or going on the road.
8) VICTORY CHRISTIAN (2-2) AT #6 BEGGS (2-2)
These two teams come in at 2-2 but this is the marquee match-up in Class 2A as #6 Beggs plays host to Victory Christian. The Golden Demons bounced back from two tough losses with a big win last week. Victory Christian did the same thing with a big win over Okmulgee after starting the season 1-2. The Conquerors have a strong passing attack, while Beggs has one of the top running backs in the state’s 2024 class. These two met in week ten last year with the district championship on the line. Victory Christian got a big win at home, setting themselves up for a better path in the playoffs. Both teams have certainly had this game circled on the calendar since November of last year. Plus, in addition to this match-up giving the winner plenty of momentum in district play, it’ll have some added storylines. Former Victory Christian head coach Ben Palmer is now an assistant coach at Beggs. It doesn’t need added juice but both teams will be fired up for this one.
9) BERRYHILL (1-3) AT #9 MULDROW (5-0)
We didn’t see this one coming as Muldrow has begun the season 5-0 and they’re the team that’s ranked heading into this match-up with Berryhill. For those not as familiar with the southeastern Oklahoma program, Muldrow has had a few winning seasons in the last decade but the Bulldogs look like the real deal this year. They’ve begun the year with a 5-0 record and senior Trenden Collins Trenden Collins 6'2" | ATH Muldrow | 2023 State OK has emerged as an absolute star at running back. He’s on pace for over 2,000 yards and this is his first time playing running back full time. Collins and the Bulldogs will get their toughest test when they host a Berryhill team that is looking to turn things around in a big way. They’ve lost three in a row but that includes losses to the #1 teams in Class 4A and Class 3A. And another loss to a top five team in Class 3A. So needless to say, the schedule has been brutal. But they have the ability to bounce back in a big way, if they can find a way to contain Collins, which nobody has done so far.
10) #1 COWETA (4-0) AT SAPULPA (3-1)
In yet another marquee game in Class 5A, it’s top-ranked Coweta going on the road to face off with Sapulpa. The Chieftains are right on the outside looking in on the 5A top ten right now but a win on Friday could catapult them into next week’s rankings. They’ve won three straight following a season-opening loss to rival Sand Springs. They’ll face a Coweta team that has been on a roll since the start of the season. The Tigers have played their last two games without starting quarterback Carson Laverty Carson Laverty 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Coweta | 2023 State OK , who is out for the season with an injury. Filling in for Laverty has been Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK and he’s made the most of the opportunity. He’s one of Coweta’s best athletes on the field and he’s made sure that the Tigers haven’t missed a step on offense. Friday’s test with Sapulpa will let us know how serious Coweta is as a title contender in Class 5A. They can’t afford to be looking ahead to next week’s showdown with McAlester.
