rnIn one of the more surprising outcomes of the 2022 season that I witnessed was Coweta’s 49-0 smashing of McAlester back in week six. We thought that the Tigers were the better team coming into the contest but we never would have predicted that 49-0 would be the final score as the Tigers were on a mission that night to make a statement to the rest of Class 5A. And leading the way was senior quarterback , who finished with over 200 yards and four touchdowns on 20-29 passing along with 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Starks stepped up to the plate of being QB1 for the Tigers when fellow senior Cason Laverty went down earlier in the season with a collarbone injury. In some of the biggest games of Coweta’s season, it was Starks that ended up shining the brightest.

Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK had some great and impressive plays for the Tigers, as he showed off great athleticism. He is super quick and demanded attention every time he touched the ball. As soon as the pocket collapsed, he was off to the races. For the game, he ended with 145 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. His two passing touchdowns consisted of 37 yards and 22 yards. He only completed 12 of 30 passes, but his athleticism is something that shows how versatile he can be. He is someone that can translate to wide receiver or running back, as well as playing quarterback. He was good enough to lead his team to an undefeated record going into the game.

The second Coweta Tiger on this breakdown is fellow senior Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK . There’s a good chance that Starks would have been on this breakdown, or at least considered anyway, but the fact that he’s filled in for senior quarterback Carson Laverty Carson Laverty 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Coweta | 2023 State OK after he went down with a collarbone injury and not only filled it, but flourished has been impressive to watch. Starks has been one of the more dynamic players on the offensive side of the ball and he’s not just an athlete back there playing quarterback, although it might look like that at times. This is a player that is completely under control and seems to shine brightest against the toughest competition. He had arguably his best game of the year in their shutout win over McAlester and came up clutch in the overtime win over Del City.

The Coweta Tigers have emerged this season as the top team in Class 5A and they’ve stayed in the top spot despite losing senior quarterback Carson Laverty Carson Laverty 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Coweta | 2023 State OK earlier in the season to a broken collarbone. However, fellow senior Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK has moved over to the quarterback spot and has been outstanding and the Tigers haven’t missed a step. At wide receiver, Starks was truly dynamic and at quarterback, he’s had some of his best performances in Coweta’s biggest games this season. He absolutely torched McAlester in a huge district clash earlier this year. He then followed that up last week with clutch play down the stretch against Del City to lock up the district crown. Starks is listed as an athlete because he can play a few different positions at the next level. But we have to tip our cap to him for what he’s done this season as a quarterback.

rnCoweta made one of the loudest statements in week six when they just absolutely smashed McAlester in a top four showdown at home. Leading the way was senior quarterback , who had the best game of his career at the position. He moved over to quarterback when starter went down earlier this year with a collarbone injury. On Thursday night, Starks torched the Buffaloes for 235 yards and four touchdowns on 20-29 passing. He also added 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Starks is one of the more dynamic athletes in the state and he’s shown that with his production as a wide receiver and a quarterback this season. Coweta is one of many teams in Class 5A to watch out for in a class that is incredibly deep.

As we mentioned earlier, senior Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK moved over to quarterback with Laverty going down with an injury. And Thursday night was probably his best game at the position this season. Starks would go 20-29 for 235 yards and four touchdowns to four different wide receivers. He would also add nearly 70 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown on the ground. Starks did have two interceptions on the night, coming on plays where he was trying to keep the play alive and make something happen down field. But neither turnover would hurt the Tigers. Starks is a truly dynamic weapon at the quarterback position and the Tiger offense hasn’t missed a step since Laverty’s injury. Coweta still has a fantastic balance of running and throwing the ball. Starks is a strong athlete and it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers he puts up the rest of the way, especially in week nine when they travel to Del City.
