Continue ReadingCoweta and Bishop McGuinness go into a highly touted matchup with a combined record 20-1. Coweta was carrying a record of 11-0 and was favored to be the state champs, while Bishop McGuinness came into this game with something to prove. That showed to be true as McGuinness came out firing on all cylinders and leading the whole game. Coweta was trying to fight from behind over the course of the game, coming back to tie it up in the second half. Ultimately, it was a game that came down to the final couple of minutes, but Coweta’s effort was not enough. McGuinness pulls out a 35-28 win and advances to play Oklahoma Sooner’s commit Erik McCarty Erik McCarty 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB McAlester | 2023 State OK and McCalester.
River Warren River Warren 6’4″ | 195 lbs | QB Del City | 2024 State OK came out firing on all cylinders tonight, coming up with one big play after another. He finished with four passing touchdowns and 301 passing yards. Some of his touchdowns consisted of him threading the needle from 20 yards out and him throwing a 45 yard bomb. He played with poise in the pocket, never showing that he was fazed, as well as passion. Not only did he get it done through the air, but on the ground as well. There were a few times that was able to break the edge and get a step on the defense to gain 5-8 yards. On one play, the pocket broke and so he scrambled and barely gained the six yards needed to pick up the first down. He reflected good accuracy and solid power with his passes, as well as the ability to occasionally scramble. His prolific play in this game resulted in his team giving Coweta their first loss of the season, while he was playing on the road.
Mike Taffe Mike Taffe 6’0″ | 190 lbs | RB Bishop McGuinness | 2023 State OK had a great game, getting it done on the ground and through the air. On the ground, he constantly fought through defenders to gain extra yards, as well as showing elusiveness by juking, stiff arming, or side-stepping defenders. He ended the game with 24 carries for 104 yards. Coweta made him earn every yard too, as they have several ranked defensive players. If he can eclipse 100 yards on the ground against Coweta, I believe that he can do it against any team in 5A in the state of Oklahoma. He showed why he is the #4 ranked running back in the state. Not only did he have a great game on the ground, he contributed with a 40 yard receiving touchdown, as well. He was flat out impressive and a treat to watch.
Will Kilgallon
Will Kilgallon
Will Kilgallon was reliable and efficient for the Irish on extra point attempts. He never attempted a regular field goal, but he did not miss on the extra points. On the extra points, he went a perfect 5/5. In a game this close, having someone that reliable can make a big difference in the outcome of a game. He deserved to be recognized for that consistency.
Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6’0″ | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK had some great and impressive plays for the Tigers, as he showed off great athleticism. He is super quick and demanded attention every time he touched the ball. As soon as the pocket collapsed, he was off to the races. For the game, he ended with 145 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. His two passing touchdowns consisted of 37 yards and 22 yards. He only completed 12 of 30 passes, but his athleticism is something that shows how versatile he can be. He is someone that can translate to wide receiver or running back, as well as playing quarterback. He was good enough to lead his team to an undefeated record going into the game.
Brett Jacobs
Brett Jacobs
Brett Jacobs came up with multiple big plays for the Irish. Throughout the duration of the game, he ended with two receiving touchdowns. One of them was from 9 yards out and the other was from 11 yards out. What I liked about Jacobs is that he would fight for extra yardage. He showed some speed and the ability to block and play linebacker. It was a good came for him, as his team came out with the win.
Mason Ford Mason Ford 5’11” | DB Coweta | 2023 State OK showed that he can play and positively contribute on both sides of the ball. On offense, he scored a 37 yard receiving touchdown and gained yardage consistently. He caught a ball while falling out of bounds for 25 yards, which he had a defender on him while doing this. He broke away with his speed for 16 yards and then again with 10 yards. On special teams, he showed off his breakaway speed, by having a burst out of the endzone for a quick 30 yards. He has a quick first step that makes him hard to cover, to go along with some craftiness. On defense, he came up with several tackles and was able to bring the ball carrier down single handedly multiple times.
Noah Loyd Noah Loyd 6’5″ | 200 lbs | LB Coweta | 2023 State OK showed quickness and power, as he made his presence known. He was wherever the quarterback or runningback was several times. On one play, he was bringing down the running back as soon as he touched the ball. On a different play, he was bringing down the quarterback before the quarterback could react. He came up with several great solo tackles and multiple sacks and tackles for a loss. He was impressive throughout the whole game.
