2A’s #4 Millwood kicked off their season on a rain-soaked field against 3A’s #3 Heritage Hall. Although the game was messy on both sides with penalties and turnovers, both teams ended up putting some big plays together, especially on the Millwood side of the match-up. The Falcons’ rally fell short as they lost to the Chargers 35-28, but there were several standouts throughout the night on both sides of the ball. For a complete game recap and a look at some of Heritage Hall’s top performers, you can check that out RIGHT HERE. In this post, we take a look at four standouts from Millwood that stepped up in a big way throughout the night.
MILLWOOD TOP PERFORMERS
Millwood’s top four performers from Thursday night are extremely unique and we promise this wasn’t done on purpose. They had one player in each class that was a top performer and we start with the freshman quarterback CJ Turnbull CJ Turnbull 6’3″ | 190 lbs | QB Millwood | 2026 State OK . Out of the four top performers, Turnbull was easily the one we knew the least about since Thursday was his first ever game. But the freshman impressed as he went against a very aggressive Heritage Hall defenses on a night where the weather and field conditions weren’t ideal. Turnbull did a good job throwing and running the ball. In the passing game, he had a few guys he was focused on and we’re interested in seeing that part of his game under better weather circumstances. And he had one of the best plays of the night. He faked a handoff and it turned into a bootleg run up the Heritage Hall sideline. He fooled all 11 Charger defenders and raced 60 yards for a touchdown.
Highlights
We were excited to see a few different players on Thursday night but at the top of the list was 2025 wide receiver and defensive back Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6’4″ | WR Douglass | 2025 State OK . The Millwood sophomore is already arguably the top basketball prospect in the state’s 2025 class. He joined the football team this offseason and before he even stepped on the field he earned multiple D1 offers. So needless to say, we wanted to see what Nickens looked like when the pads came on. He’s a very physical player and gifted runner. The speed is there and he showcased that quite a few times throughout the night. On a 78-yard touchdown reception where he sprinted the last 50 yards for six and on an interception that set up another Millwood touchdown. Nickens is definitely an intriguing football prospect and we’re interested to see how he continues to develop. It’s still very early but he’s already showing signs of being a strong WR prospect in the ’25 class.
As excited as we were to see Nickens on the football field, we were equally excited to see the return of 2024 athlete Micho Lavine Micho Lavine 6’3″ | 210 lbs | ATH Millwood | 2024 State OK after he missed his sophomore season with a knee injury. Millwood was careful with how much they used Lavine on the offensive side of the ball but he’s definitely going to be their power back this fall and even used as a tight end in certain situations. But what really impressed us about his game was what we saw from him on the defensive side of the ball. He was lining up as a defensive end or outside linebacker depending on the formation and he was getting after it on that side of the ball. If we had to project based on his production on Thursday night, we’re very intrigued about his abilities as a prospect on defense moving forward. But like with Turnbull, we’re wanting to see more from him when the weather isn’t so bad and the field conditions are a little better to see what he does on offense.
Our final prospect was Millwood’s top player and has arguably been that for the last three years. 2023 running back Rickey Hunt Jr Rickey Hunt Jr 6’0″ | 175 lbs | RB Millwood | 2023 State OK . continues to show why he’s one of the more versatile players in the state’s 2023 class. He had a strong night running the football and was also used in the passing game as Turnbull’s safety blanket when plays broke down. On the ground, Hunt would finish with nearly 100 yards and two touchdowns. The biggest thing that stood out to him about his running abilities was his bag of tricks. Hunt is strong with the ball and it routinely took two to three Charger defenders to bring him down. But he’s more than a power back as he showed off a nifty spin move on multiple occasions that left would-be tacklers stuck in the mud, literally. Hunt also led the team in receptions and should have a big impact in that department this fall as their young freshman gets more comfortable in the Millwood offense.
