Orange County has its deepest class of quarterbacks in recent years.
Here are the top 15 quarterbacks in Orange County’s 2023 class.
15. Gavin Rogers, Crean Lutheran
Rogers did some things well for a Crean Lutheran team that struggled last season. He does a good job keeping his eyes on the secondary even when under pressure. His release is clean and his arm is decent. He actually throws better off-platform than when he has his feet set. His accuracy could improve a bit but he was often throwing in tight windows because Crean only had two receivers who could get open last season. He’s a solid athlete who can extend plays with his legs. Rogers is a nice high school quarterback who won’t turn the ball over and will get a chance to throw to some quality transfer receivers this year.
14. Kaden Austin Kaden Austin 6'5" | QB Laguna Hills | 2023 CA , Laguna Hills
Austin is big at 6-foot-5 and a real dual threat quarterback. Laguna Hills expanded its offense under a new head coach last season and he runs it well. He is patient and often makes the right decisions with the ball. His delivery is a little long, but he has a high release and the ball gets there. He can throw off-platform or from the pocket and due to his size, the Hawks are comfortable using him on designed run plays. Austin has offers from Puget Sound and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
13. Julian Puche, Servite
Puche is tough to evaluate because there is not a ton of film on him but he wouldn’t be a contender to start at Servite if he wasn’t good. He throws a really good deep ball and has a nice touch to his throws. He holds the ball down near his stomach which adds some time to his release. I saw him at the Mission Viejo passing tournament briefly and while his accuracy isn’t great, he has good timing with the receivers. He is competing with a sophomore transfer from Mater Dei for the starting job and they have big shoes to fill with Noah Fifita Noah Fifita 5'10" | 175 lbs | QB Servite | 2022 State CA graduating and playing at Arizona.
12. Christian Lundsberg, Canyon
Lundsberg is 6-foot-4 and one of the most mechanically sound quarterbacks in the class. The ball really jumps out of his hands and he has a very strong arm. He averaged 282 yards per game last season and had 27 touchdowns. Sometimes he gets a little risky with the ball and turns it over, but Canyon was playing behind a lot against a tough nonleague schedule. Canyon will rely on Lundsberg a lot this year with a new coaching staff and a lot of inexperienced players around him. No offers for him yet but he has gone on some unofficial visits and has played well on the camp circuit.
11. Colton Joseph Colton Joseph 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Newport Harbor | 2023 State CA , Newport Harbor
Joseph started the first few games for San Juan Hills last season before suffering a back injury and never getting his job back. He is 6-foot-2 and showed flashes of a really good quarterback last season and would have kept his starting spot if not for the accent of a freshman quarterback who is a national prospect. His release is pretty quick and he knows when to throw hard and when to put touch on the ball. He is a solid athlete who can run for big plays when he needs to. He is now at Newport Harbor with a new offensive coaching staff who believes in him and will give him a chance to throw 25-30 times per game. The Ivy League schools and Military Academies have shown interest in Joseph.
