Bishop McGuinness played a very good game Friday night against a very familiar rival in Carl Albert. Even though they came away from the overtime contest on the short side of the scoreboard they still showed signs of a very good team that will make for a tough matchup against anyone that draws them in the playoffs. Let’s take a look at some of the top performers for the Irish from Friday night.
River Warren SO- QB 6’4” 175lbs
Warren was very impressive Friday night against a talented Titan defense. River has the size and ability to make all the throws needed to keep a defense from loading the box against a strong Irish rushing attack. Warren eclipsed the 250-yard mark through the air and kicked off the night with a 7-yard TD pass on a critical fourth down to begin the game. Warren also had another TD toss late in the 4th that would set up the Irish for a two point attempt to tie the game. On the two point attempt River powered towards the goal line but lost the ball bouncing forward. He must have had that Irish luck on his side as the ball bounced into a Irish players hands and tied the game. Warren showed composure all night making excellent throws and also showing good mobility as well. Even though the Irish came up short in the contest Warren gave Bishop McGuinness plenty to be excited about moving forward and showed why he’s one of the highest regarded passers in the state for the ‘24 class. Warren had this to say “We have a lot of talented guys if we keep working we’ll be where we want to be by the end of the season, tough loss Friday a lot of emotions in that game but that doesn’t effect our end goal.”
Mike Taffe Mike Taffe 6'0" | 190 lbs | RB Bishop McGuinness | 2023 State OK JR- RB/ATH
Taffe was really impressive as usual Friday night cutting his way through the Titan defense. Taffe had four total TDs with three coming from his legs and catching the other. Taffe showed off an array of skills in the rushing game as well as receiving. I was really blown away with his agility and ability to almost always make the first guy miss. Taffe is definitely the focal point of the Irish offense and will continue to give opposing team defenses problems throughout the remainder of the season. Watch for Taffe to mirror his efforts Friday as he seemed to get stronger as the game moved along and could very well do the same as the season progresses. The JR ball carrier will continue to impress and build his resume in his fairly young career.
Other Notable Stats-
Paul Tarman WR- 10-yard TD reception
The Irish showed they have what it takes to go up against the top teams in the state and will be very confident moving forward. Bishop McGuinness. (3-3) will take on Western Heights next week at home.
