Prep Redzone Oklahoma will once again make the trip down to Dallas to cover some of Oklahoma’s best. Things will kick off on Saturday with the True Buzz 7v7 tournament and continue at the USNFT combine on Sunday. You can check out our Primer on the USNFT Combine Right Here! Prep Redzone will have all hands on deck for pool play at the 7v7 tourney on Saturday before splitting up on Sunday with one covering the combine and the other covering bracket play. Right here, we take a look at ten names we’re excited to check out at the 7v7 tourney this weekend. We’ll see much more than just ten standouts this weekend but here’s a start.
QUARTERBACKS
[player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"] - 2022 - Norman North (Sooner 7)
The first of two quarterbacks that we’re excited to see in person for the first time this offseason is Norman North 2022 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"]. The Norman North gunslinger will be suiting up for Sooner 7 this weekend and it’s a good chance to get an up close look at a quarterback on the rise. Similar to the other quarterbacks on this list, Frakes doesn’t have that much experience underneath the Friday night lights but all of that will change this fall. Frakes certainly looks the part and could be primed for a big year in 2021. And that should come as a surprise to nobody.
[player_tooltip player_id="115682" first="Gunnar" last="Thrash"] - 2022 - Perkins-Tryon (Sooner 7)
Out of the three quarterbacks we have listed here, 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="115682" first="Gunnar" last="Thrash"] from Perkins-Tryon has been a guy we’ve constant improvement from this offseason. The first time we saw Thrash this offseason was in January. He was making some really great throws but would force it at times. The last time we saw Thrash, we saw all of those great throws and Thrash had cleaned up those turnovers and would not throw it into closed windows. He has sat behind [player_tooltip player_id="38589" first="Austin" last="Mages"] with Perkins-Tryon the last few years but we shouldn’t be surprised if he has a breakout season in 2021.
[player_tooltip player_id="110745" first="Knox" last="Dyson"] - 2024 - Owasso (918 Elite)
Another quarterback we’re excited to see for the first time this offseason is Owasso quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="110745" first="Knox" last="Dyson"], who will be performing with 918 Elite after starting this offseason with the Texas ICE 7v7 organization. Dyson is a highly regarded 2024 quarterback who has a few quarterbacks ahead of him in the depth chart at Owasso. He came into the 2020 season as one of the few 2024 names that we already knew. He certainly looks the part physically. We’re looking forward to seeing how he competes and throws the ball this weekend.
RUNNING BACKS
[player_tooltip player_id="57205" first="Rickey" last="Hunt Jr"] - 2023 - Millwood (Sooner 7)
We mentioned that we have two events that we’re covering this weekend in the Dallas area and one player is also pulling double duty. Millwood 2023 running back [player_tooltip player_id="57205" first="Rickey" last="Hunt Jr"] will be competing with Sooner 7 on Saturday and will also be competing in the USNFT Combine on Sunday. Hunt joined Sooner 7 following the end of the high school basketball season. He has just one tournament under his belt, coming two weeks ago in Houston. He was an instant impact player during that tournament. If you’ve seen Sooner 7, you know they love including the running backs so Hunt was a great addition.
[player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"] - 2022 - Union (Sooner 7)
While [player_tooltip player_id="57205" first="Rickey" last="Hunt Jr"] is heading into his second tournament with Sooner 7, Union 2022 running back [player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"] has been a mainstay for Sooner 7 this offseason. He is getting better and better every time he gets out on the field. The former Union quarterback is excelling at his new position and that should be a scary thing to think about for 6A-1 opponents this fall. He was outstanding for Union in the running game last year as he moved from quarterback to running back in a heavy rushing attack. However, he’s proven in the last few months that he can be a weapon as a receiver out of the backfield.
WIDE RECEIVERS
[player_tooltip player_id="110747" first="Jino" last="Boyd"] - 2024 - Union (918 Elite)
Just like with [player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"], you can’t help but be blown away with the speed of Union freshman wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="110747" first="Jino" last="Boyd"]. The Union youngster is already held in high regard when it comes to the state’s 2024 class and there is no doubt that he has a ton of potential. Don’t be surprised to see Boyd have a big weekend while he simply runs past defender after defender. Boyd isn’t the biggest wide receiver in the state but he already is one of the fastest and he uses that to his advantage. And in a 7v7 setting where receivers can’t get hit, the lack of size means nothing.
[player_tooltip player_id="38694" first="Makhai" last="Belt"] - 2022 - Union (Sooner 7)
We go from a young Union wide receiver to a veteran Union receiver with 2022 wideout [player_tooltip player_id="38694" first="Makhai" last="Belt"]. As mentioned with [player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"], Union was very run-oriented when they made their run to the semifinals. That meant Belt had fewer opportunities to showcase his talents last fall. However, we really like his game as a slot receiver that has big play ability. He has really strong hands and just finds a way to get open consistently. Belt is in the middle of an outstanding offseason with the 7v7 circuit and this weekend is another opportunity to show that.
[player_tooltip player_id="38782" first="Morgan" last="Pearson"] - 2023 - Plainview (C4 Texoma)
Alright we break up the Union content with our final wide receiver prospect to watch. Plainview 2023 wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="38782" first="Morgan" last="Pearson"] will once again be suiting up for C4 Texoma and we can’t wait to watch him in person once again. Pearson has been on our radar following his freshman season. The Plainview coaches have told us that Pearson’s sophomore year could have been even better had they had some consistency at quarterback. Despite that, Pearson is still one of the best sophomore receivers in the state and he’ll look to continue a very strong offseason.
LINEBACKERS
[player_tooltip player_id="38767" first="Caden" last="Pickens"] - 2022 - Plainview (C4 Texoma)
The first of a couple defensive prospects that we’re excited to see is Plainview linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="38767" first="Caden" last="Pickens"]. Let’s be honest, most of the 7v7 playmakers are on offense so that’s why you see this 8:2 ratio of offense to defense. However, Pickens is an outstanding athlete who had a great junior season for the Indians, racking up big numbers in the tackle category. Pickens is a player that we’ve seen film of but haven’t gotten a chance to really watch in person. We get that opportunity this weekend and are looking forward to it.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
[player_tooltip player_id="61137" first="Korbyn" last="Green"] - 2022 - Owasso (Sooner 7)
The second and only other defensive prospect on this list is Owasso cornerback [player_tooltip player_id="61137" first="Korbyn" last="Green"]. The standout corner has been absolutely on fire while playing for Sooner 7 this offseason. He’s been one of the top corners and has been consistent all offseason. Because of that, Green has to be considered a prospect on the rise within the 2022 group. He also made the move this offseason, transferring from Booker T Washington to Owasso. The Rams will be one of the top teams in the state and with the way Green has been playing this offseason, their defense will be among the best as well.
OTHER NOTABLE NAMES
