has been a guy on our radar for a while now and he’s showing why with his overall playmaking ability this season. Matlock has been incredibly productive on the offensive side of the ball. He’s leading the team in all three receiving categories and he’s also been productive in the run game. Matlock turns around and plays defense, where he’s near the top of the list in terms of tackles this season and is also up there in pass break ups. And finally, Matlock returned a kick for a score earlier this year so he’s another player that brings so much to the table because whenever he’s on the field, opponents have to worry about where he is and how he’ll impact the game.

returns to McLoud and we mean that in a literal sense. Earlier this offseason, it looked like Matlock was moving to a different district nearby but he’s back and expected to pick up where he left off last season. And Matlock was incredibly productive for the Redskins last season. Matlock emerged in 2023 as McLoud’s leading receiver as a sophomore and it wasn’t particularly close. He had a strong freshman season in 2022 and took the next step last fall. Now, we’re looking forward to seeing him take another step towards being the top receiver in Class 3A. Last season, he had over 500 yards and five touchdowns and is hungry for more.

is a very intriguing prospect for us because there aren’t many players in the state’s 2026 class that have been more productive than him over the last two seasons. Matlock emerged as a star for McLoud and he had a breakout moment as a freshman and that only continued during his sophomore season. This offseason, Matlock announced that he was transferring to Choctaw and if he ends up with the Yellowjackets on Friday night, they are getting a player that can do a lot of things very well. In all three phases of the game, Matlock has the potential to be a game-changer. The only thing left to figure out with him is what position he fits in at the next level.

this week. We put on the film and immediately we saw SPEED. Matlock appeared to be faster than everyone on the field in every single clip. So needless to say, there were a lot of big plays from the McLoud standout. And similar to Carter at Blanchard, Matlock had a great ability to impact the game in all three phases. On offense, Matlock was a standout wide receiver and he turned around and was a lockdown corner on defense. Matlock would also make plays as a kick returner. As a wide receiver, there were quite a few plays were Matlock would take a simple screen pass and with his ability in the open field, he turned a small play into a big play. The McLoud standout showcased a great ability to change direction without sacrificing that top-end speed. On defense, he used that overall quickness, speed and fluid hips to always be in a right position. It allowed him to keep his eyes in the backfield and then make a play. In addition to Matlock always seeming like the fastest player on the field, it also seemed like he was starting a play a second before it began because of his lightning quick get off. As Matlock continues to get stronger, he’s going to explode this fall.Access all of Prep Redzone

for the start to his sophomore season. Matlock was vocal on social media after our last ranking update when he was at #27. He’s jumped up to #20 and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Matlock has been outstanding for the Redskins on both sides of the ball. This breakdown is full of players who can shine on both sides of the ball and for Matlock, the jury is still out on what is his natural position at the next level. He’s a ball hawk on defense and an absolute playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. He’s become a match-up nightmare and opponents have wised up and started putting more defenders on him, trying to slow him down.

and it doesn’t matter where he lines up on the field, he’s usually making plays. Just like Hill, we covered Matlock earlier this year during our “Friday Film Review” series and the thing that really stood out was his versatility. He was an impact player on offense, defense and in the special teams department. It’s hard not to expect him to take the next step this season when you consider what he did as a freshman. He finished with over 30 catches for over 600 yards and four touchdowns. He also had four interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. We think that Matlock, combined with Hill, is going to give McLoud several really good options at overall playmaking on offense.

is our final prospect on this breakdown and he’s one of the more versatile on the list. He made a massive impact for McLoud last season in all three phases of the game. We got a chance to break down his film from his freshman season earlier this year during our “Friday Film Review” series and the thing that really stood out to us was his ability to make plays from the wide receiver position. He does a great job of beating cornerbacks in a variety of ways whether it’s speed, precise route running or something else. And then on defense, Matlock was able to impact the game on that side of the ball but it was the offense and then his ability in the return game that was eye-opening. He sees the field in a way that not many other prospects his age are able to see the field and that’s why he was able to make a ton of plays.
