A Champlin Park transfer who comes highly-rated by 247Sports in their latest update of the state’s rising senior rankings, Fitch no doubt had a big year with 6A semifinalist Minnetonka at the CB position. However, the momentum started earlier in the summer, as Fitch had a really strong showing at the Gophers camp last summer, going 9′ broad and absolutely going crazy during 1v1s, playing press-man with lethal efficiency and balling out 1v1s against a loaded group of wideouts. Coming in at 5’10, Fitch saw a big-time 6A schedule and WR competition in 2025, where he primarily off-man, although PRZMN did see him press last summer at the Gophs, as we mentioned.
Fitch displays patient creep steps, and he reads & reacts and can stick & plant with explosiveness, with particular aggression and production when reading and playing three-step drops and quick game. Fitch demonstrates situational awareness, reading quick game, understanding splits, and predicting what routes he has a chance of seeing any given rep, and smoothly finds and stays in the WRs hip pocket, no matter the route. Plus, the DB is aggressive in run support and will come downhill and close on RBs with physical tackles with pace and speed – will meet WRs behind the LOS when defending screens.
Fitch also shows a light, nimble backpedal and does a good job of staying square and keeping the gate closed, and he’s a productive zone defender who sees route concepts develop in real time and is aggressive at the catch point. Plus, the ball skills flash on tape to boot. At 5’10, it’s going to depend on the hips and top-end speed to figure out just how Fitch can project to. Hard to get a read on the hips from the film, but they do look loose and able to swivel and transition easily, but coaches are going to have to navigate the lack of speed times and the height, and he isn’t doing himself any favors by not running the 40 at college prospect camps. – Tonka’s other CB – got offered and committed, so the Tonka DB room is getting looked at, so it may come down to some key, highly-competitive, big-time showings on the Summer Camp Circuit to jumpstart this recruitment. Either way, keep an eye on James FitchJamesFitch
