Expert Analysis

Barringer is a highly versatile, athletic playmaker on the defensive line. He took some short-yardage carries on offense last season and lined up everywhere from nose to edge defensively. He has the strength to hold up as a 0-technique, but his biggest upside is as a quick, powerful 3-technique who can get to the passer through or around the interior offensive line.

Graysen has transitioned from Atkins High School and is now at West Forsyth, where he should make an immediate impact. Graysen was an All-Conference player last season, and I like how he uses his hands to shed an offensive lineman’s hands when they try to fit on his inside frame. Graysen’s feet don’t stop moving on contact, and he has a couple of quick inside moves when he uses his hands to get to the quarterback on his pass rush. He’s developed steadily every year, and he’s got a big junior year ahead of him.

Most of Atkins’ defensive front is undersized, so they’ll often move Barringer around to provide size and create mismatches. He’s a fiery run-stuffer who can both eat up space and make splash plays. That’s evidenced by his five forced fumbles last season, one of the best marks in the state. He’s a big, powerful dude with plenty of leg drive as a two-way player. They also put him at running back in short-yardage situations, and he scored a rushing touchdown as a sophomore. As he transfers to West Forsyth, I’m interested in how he’ll be used.

Atkins has a history of playing young players on the defensive line and Barringer rose to the occasion last season. Barringer is a tough player who fights through blocks to make big hits on running backs. He got plenty of experience as a defensive tackle last season and should continue to get better as a pass-rusher as he gets older.
