Expert Analysis
Oliver West | Prep Redzone Scout
The 6’2, 205 lb. Hornets senior gunslinger has a big arm and knows how to use it. With timing and touch, McElroy has a great deep ball on fades and posts and slings the ball out of his hand and downfield with seeming ease. I also am a big fan of his footwork, as he can smoothly navigate in and right outside of the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield and letting the routes develop and also is consistent in setting his feet and following through in his vertical throws. Even when he throws it off his backfoot the ball flies downfield, and I also like McElroy’s ability to throw into smaller windows in the middle of the field. Consistent, productive, and experienced pocket passer who is going to make a college QB room a lot stronger with the addition of his arm. No recruiting news this fall!

The underrated Edina signal-caller has thrown some beautiful deep balls and dropped the ball into the breadbasket for streaking Hornets downfield. I also like how he puts it on their back shoulder where the DBs can’t make a play, and he’s also completed some beautiful deep slants in-between defenders and tight windows. Overall though it looks like he can make every throw on the route tree at the prep level and really help an offense continue to churn forward.

McElroy has a giant arm. When he can step into a throw, he can throw the deep ball on a rope. When under pressure, he has enough arm strength to make stronger throws than an average quarterback still. His arm strength doesn’t just translate to deep balls. He can make throws – specifically out routes from the hash to the opposite sideline – that are not advisable for most quarterbacks. He can also get the ball into tight windows. McElroy is not going to look to run for yards but can make throws on the move.
