was on the radar of Division I programs across the Midwest, it’s a bit of a shock that none of have offered at this point in time. Blount is an instinctual backer that is as about as sure of a tackler as they come. Keeping his eyes in the backfield and watching the ball, Blount is a big reason why Dowling was able to stop opposing team’s run game with regularity this fall. He can sniff out inside runs, QB keepers and screens over the middle.
Blount isn’t as explosive as an athlete or as big — standing at just 6-foot and 215-pounds — but he’s got the mentality and the know how at playing middle linebacker in one of the best high school programs the state has to offer. He posted 68 tackles, four tackles-for-loss (TFLs) and 2.5 sacks this fall.
I just wrote about Blount Jr. during the regular season after watching him operate against Kennedy at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. I felt compelled to file another report after seeing his performance in a state semifinal win against rival Valley at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The junior piled up a team-best 10.0 tackles, four of which were solo. He’s fast to the football and his quickness makes him tough for the blocker to square up. When they do, he uses his hands well to separate from blocks. Blount Jr.’s frame can comfortably add mass and strength without the loss of the athleticism he leans heavily upon now. The junior headed into the 5A title game with a team-high 60.5 tackles (35 solo, 3.5 TFL) and 2.5 sacks. Blount Jr. also forced and recovered a fumble in 2025.
Blount Jr. has been on the recruiting radar since impacting the varsity action as a freshman. He spent his first two seasons at Centennial before joining Dowling this year. When watching him in person during a game against Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Oct. 3, Blount Jr. confirmed his reputation as an athletic, active performer on the second level of the defense. He tied for the team lead with 6.0 tackles, including four for loss. Blount Jr. runs really well, sideline to sideline, covering a lot of ground. His agility and quickness allow him to stick in coverage. He gets downhill quickly in the run game as well. Blount Jr. does well in diagnosing what’s coming before the snap and flows well to the football once the play is underway.
