Expert Analysis
Rob Howe | Prep Redzone Scout
Janis probably won’t scare a lot of opponents getting off of the bus. It’s once he steps between the lines that they realize there’s going to be a problem. The Trojan senior flashed that talent and production again during an in-person scout on Oct. 17, 2025, when West faced Prairie in Cedar Rapids. He rushed 23 times for 140 yards and a touchdown, and caught a pair of passes for 34 yards. On defense, Janis produced 5.5 tackles (3 solo, 1.0 TFL). Toughness is Janis’ carrying tool. He just sticks his nose into the action wherever he lines up on the field. That’s not to say there’s a lack of skills and ability. Janis looks natural as a running back, flowing with the play and making good decisions. His athletic explosion also works well on defense, where he could fit nicely at safety in plenty of college systems.

The most impactful skill position player for Iowa City West,

imposed his will on would-be tacklers of City High. Lowering his shoulder and delivering punishment to linebackers and defensive backs for the Little Hawks. Janis may be one of the toughest players in all of 5A, considering he stands at 5’9″ and significantly less than 200 pounds, because he doesn’t play like it. One of those small, but tough as hell running backs to tackle, Janis will power through arm tackles and can juke defenders out of their shoes. He led all rushers on Friday night with 20 carries or 111 yards and a touchdown.

is ready for football season. Anxious to put the pads on and hit somebody, Janis may be one of the more overlooked weapons for the Trojan offense and defense this coming season.
Impactful as a junior, Janis has the opportunity to reach the next level and shoot up the rankings this fall after taking 51 carries for 261 yards and two touchdowns offensively, while adding 35 tackles and an interception on defense. Janis isn’t an overwhelming physical presence on the football field, but he’s not afraid to hit, and he can make would-be tacklers miss in space by shedding them off or breaking their ankles.

What you can expect from Janis on the field is production. He rushed for 261 yards (5.1 YPC) and two touchdowns, and added a 12-yard catch as a junior in 2024. On the other side of the ball, Janis recorded 35.0 tackles (18 solo) and an interception. On a basic level, he can be described as a good all-around football player. We see that when watching his 11th-grade highlight video. He’s a downhill runner that hits the hole hard and bursts through it. There’s some wiggle in space and a toughness through contact. Janis plays disciplined defense within the Trojan scheme, breaking quickly on the ball when it enters his area. Also a special teams’ asset, Janis’ versatility should open up more opportunities for him on the next level with a sound senior season.
