Expert Analysis
Mark Johnson | Prep Redzone Scout
We end with a highly productive RB out of Kewaunee HS. Owen has been a solid contributor and big play threat in the past, but watching him with a big workload was impressive to watch as he piled up monster numbers and wins with his team. Carlson is an efficient runner. He is always moving forward and gaining yards. In the backfield he is primarily a one cut runner who finds his aiming point and attacks it. He has the vision to find the seam if one opens up early or if he has to find a new path. The long speed allows him to beat angles and win in open space. He has a knack for making the highlight reel run look easy. He also possesses a strong burst through the trenches. Teams have to give this kid a look. He is a difference maker.

From Week 1 to his final game, Owen was one of the most consistent runners in the state. Owen was responsible for an insane 71% of his team’s rushing yards, and 70% of the rushing TDs. There was no secret to what Kewaunee wanted to do on offense, and teams couldn’t slow Owen down.

Stats: 34 Carries, 223 Yards, 2 TDsrnOwen put on one last dominant showing Friday night to end his HS career. More teams need to give the senior a look because that should not be his last career game. Owen spent the early part of his career being the explosive back that changed the pace and broke the game open. This year he proved he could handle a big workload while still providing explosive plays. I love the way he carries the ball. Whether beating defenders with speed, jukes, or lowering his shoulder, the senior is always moving up field. You don’t see him hesitating with the ball in his hands. His instincts and vision jump off the tape as he quickly finds running lanes. Carlson can be a playmaker at the next level. Check out the tape below.

Stats: 29 Carries, 252 Yards, 4 TDsrnAnother week, another dominant performance from Kewaunee’s lead back. Owen piled up the carries, and the big plays were plentiful as well. I am most impressed by Owen’s vision. He makes so many plays where he is well beyond the line of scrimmage before he is even contacted because he quickly finds lanes and blocks to utilize and sets up defenders so they can’t get to him. Once he hits those open lanes, Carlson has the speed to take any carry to the house. Owen also brings the elusiveness between the tackles to make defenders miss and create space. Owen is at the helm of a dominant rushing attack for Kewaunee. Get eyes on the senior.

Stats: 11 Carries, 123 Yards, 2 TDsrnOwen has thrived with his larger workload this season, and so has the Kewaunee offense. In Level One play, we saw a lot of examples of his short area agility. Carson was able to consistently make defenders miss in tight quarters, or at least not allow them to make direct hits on him, so that way he could bounce off the tackle attempt and keep getting up field. Owen has the burst to hit the hole and burst out of cuts or jukes. He does a great job seeing the field too. The senior cuts back to utilize blocks, or capitalize on the defenders leverage. I like the senior’s feel for the position. Take a look at the film from this season so far.

Stats: 23 Carries, 174 Yards, 3 TDsrnOwen has taken on a much bigger workload this season compared to his junior season. The big plays and production have only gone up with the extra work. Carlson’s speed gives him the ability to go off tackle, find a seam, and get out into space off the edge. Owen has developed good instincts with the ball in his hands. He capitalizes on what the defense and his OL gives him. Owen also has multiple examples of effective agility and lateral moves in tight quarters to create space and then accelerate past would be tacklers. I was interested in how he would look as the bell-cow. He hasn’t disappointed.

Kewaunee put together a great 2022 led by QB Mitchell Thompson and RB Jesse Morales- Hernandez. However, those two have graduated. The athlete I believe will step further into the spotlight because of it is RB

. The ’24 is coming off a 800 yards 12 TD season, so he has already shown he can produce. Now we hopefully get to see what he can do with 100+ carries. The 5’11” 190 lbs athlete has break away speed, very good burst through the hole, and he has a knack for creating the big play. He is one of the top recruits in the conference this season. Make sure this kid is on your recruiting boards.

These events are set up best for the explosive, change of pace backs that can be mismatch nightmares. Where an athlete can really stand out is by having that same success while being bigger than a lot of the guys around him. That is what 5’10” 190 lbs junior RB Owen Carlson did. At that size, Owen posted an impressive 4.63 40 yard dash and broad jumped well over 9′. Carlson looked the part of a between the tackles type of ball carrier. An athlete who can run with a lot of power when attacking north-south, and has the long speed to be able to turn those seams of daylight into big gains.
Owen isn’t used a ton in the passing game at Kewaunee, but we saw that same type of play in the one on ones. When he relied more on speed to create separation than pure route running it was successful. Owen is set to have a large role on the Kewaunee offense next fall. Look for him to put up big numbers, and handle a large workload.
