We made it, and Thursday night of Week 1—enlarged by looming weather across the state on Friday—is in the books. We're always player-focused, so we'll have plenty of “top performer” or “things you may have missed” content later in the week. This isn't that. Instead, I'm focused on reacting to some of the night's biggest storylines while talking about a few key performers.

State Champions Make Statements

Just three of last year's 11 state champions were in action on Friday, but two of them made huge statements.

7A Grimsley got off to a hot start, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. They'd add a field goal before halftime to lead, 24-0 at the break. That score held throughout the game as the Whirlies' defense blanked West Charlotte.

Receiver [player_tooltip player_id='2170655' first='Alex' last='Cooper'] was unstoppable early, scoring on a 75-yard touchdown run and a nearly 50-yard reception. [player_tooltip player_id='1815393' first='Ty' last='Shoemake'] added a short touchdown run between the two as the other Grimsley touchdown.

Reidsville started a new era after the most successful senior class in school history.

Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1050807' first='Tyson' last='Broadway'] made some high-level throws, including an impressive back-shoulder throw as part of a three-touchdown half. The Rams were a bit sloppy in the first half, but took down a strong Northern Guilford squad. The secondary was excellent, and [player_tooltip player_id='2177962' first='Damarien' last='Whitted'] picked off two passes.

The Nighthawks had some flashes, too. They played three quarterbacks, including two freshmen. [player_tooltip player_id='2340755' first='Daniel' last='Evans'] tossed a touchdown pass, while running back [player_tooltip player_id='2240938' first='Christian' last='Leach'] added a late touchdown in a 35-14 Reidsville win.

Early 6A Returns

Essentially halfway into Week 1, we're not going to get the full picture. However, one of the most interesting classes tonight was 6A, where a few results made me raise my eyebrows, and others made me nod my head.

Seventy-First and Terry Sanford played one of the best high school games I've ever seen in Week 1 last season. This year, not so much.

The Falcons dominated from the opening whistle. Well, from the third drive. First, Sanford struck quickly with an 86-yard touchdown reception by [player_tooltip player_id='1749317' first='Sebastian' last='O'Keefe']. O'Keefe then scored on the next drive, too.

It was the usual suspects for Seventy-First. [player_tooltip player_id='653512' first='Shon' last='Pone Jr']. scored twice and picked off a pass in his first game as the featured back. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1334992' first='R'Maunni' last='Watson'] scored twice through the air and twice on the ground. Defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1408808' first='John' last='Archer'] got in on the action in an unusual way with an interception. I thought they'd win, but I was a bit surprised at the Falcons' 59-14 blowout.

The 6A class is the one I feel least comfortable ranking, and already, I foresee some drastic changes to the Top 10 (Which I introduced in my Season Primer).

One team that will definitely move up is currently unranked J.H. Rose. We knew the Rampants could score, but to hold Northern Nash, No. 3 in my 6A Top 10, to just 11 points was impressive. The Rampants actually held a 20-3 lead late in the fourth quarter before allowing a late [player_tooltip player_id='1968099' first='Preston' last='McDaniel'] touchdown run.

Quarterback Chase Davis had a big game, throwing two touchdowns, including one to [player_tooltip player_id='2264327' first='Kasyn' last='Chase']. Chase added a late rushing touchdown as well. It's safe to say Rose will leapfrog some teams.

There were several notable losses, albeit to talented teams. Northern Guilford, Sun Valley, and Scotland all fell. While none of those three were in my Top 10, they were all in consideration for one of those final spots.

A few 6A teams that impressed me: Philip O. Berry (First win in over a year), Franklinton, Union Pines, and Triton

Week 1 Instant Classics

We had a few nail-biters in Week 1. Here were a few of my favorites.

Asheboro and Scotland, in a battle of two premier running backs, went back and forth. [player_tooltip player_id='2241103' first='Dallas' last='Brinton'] scored three touchdowns for the Blue Comets, while [player_tooltip player_id='1858055' first='Mike' last='McLean'] scored twice and added a late two-point conversion. Great 25-22 win for Asheboro.

Green Level and Athens Drive should both be improved this year and played a fun shootout on Thursday. I have to admit, when I heard premier athlete [player_tooltip player_id='1853129' first='Derek' last='Monroe'] was moving to quarterback for the year, I didn't think he'd throw for four touchdowns in the first game. [player_tooltip player_id='1616159' first='Aaron' last='Sadler'] added a kick return touchdown and two receiving scores for the Gators.

From what I've heard, Athens Drive had success in the passing game, too. I have to assume that means [player_tooltip player_id='2263897' first='Jaylen' last='Hepner'] played well, and I'm excited to see the film.

Providence and Hickory Ridge played a barn-burner, too, with Providence's stars in the passing game (QB [player_tooltip player_id='1321018' first='Luke' last='Meador'], WR [player_tooltip player_id='1106577' first='Otavio' last='Oliveira'], and TE [player_tooltip player_id='1125763' first='Alex' last='Haywood']) proving to be the difference.

Southern Durham completed a comeback win over an impressive Wake Forest. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1217496' first='Jonathan' last='Dillon']'s two second-half rushing touchdowns completed the comeback, but I'm excited to jump into the film from this one, especially with three premier running backs on display.

Cleveland and Pinecrest played a classic. The Rams turned the ball over with nine minutes left, trailing by two touchdowns, but tied it up at 34 with 15 seconds left. In overtime, Pinecrest scored first, but botched the extra point. Cleveland quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1702810' first='Owen' last='Hulbert'], who excelled down the stretch, ran it in from five yards out, and [player_tooltip player_id='1607760' first='Brody' last='Barnes'] hit the game-winning extra point.

Obviously, I can't hit everything in this one piece, but what did I miss? Who do I need to write about this week? Let me know on Twitter (@whelms21).
