Coming off their first state championship in six decades following the 2024 season, Choctaw was hungry for more gold in 2025 but they knew they were going to have to prove it week in and week out. The non-district schedule was a tough one, featuring road games to west Texas, Kansas and against reigning 6A-1 champion Bixby. Choctaw started 1-2 but finally got to play in front of the home crowd to open district play. The Yellowjackets stumbled twice in early October, and they were entering week eight with a 3-4 record. They were in a position where they were out of the district title hunt and had to fight for playoff positioning. They won three straight down the stretch and finished the regular season at 6-4. They were dominant in the first two rounds of the playoffs, including a road win over Sapulpa in the quarterfinals. That set up a semifinal showdown with Stillwater. They lost to the Pioneers in week seven in a game where they fell down 21-0 but rallied to make it a game in the fourth. The rematch featured the reversal in the script. Choctaw jumped up 22-0 on the Pioneers and had to hold on for a 22-14 win. But however they did it, the Yellowjackets punched their ticket back to the state title game for a shot at back to back gold balls. They faced Sand Springs in Edmond and one year after Choctaw ended a 60-year title drought, it was Sand Springs that did so in 2025. The Yellowjackets fell 32-27 and the up and down season ended at 9-5 with a 6A-2 Runner Up finish. But in the post-Bixby 6A-2, (2022 to now) we would make the argument that the Yellowjackets have been the top program in this class over the last four years.    2026 OUTLOOK   The Yellowjackets come into this season with the same expectations and the same preseason hype as a top five team in Class 6A-2. They bring back the majority of their starters on both sides of the ball but we can't help but look at the offense and see how different it's going to look this season, despite bringing back seven starters. The Yellowjackets averaged nearly 40 points per game last season but they'll have a new quarterback and they have to replace a three-year starter at running back. Throw in the fact that some of their top wide receivers graduated and you have a unit where the strength will definitely start on the line of scrimmage. Choctaw is confident in the quarterback position and they are one of those programs that can reload at the skill positions. They have the majority of their offensive line back and one of the top tight ends in the country. They should be just fine on that side of the ball, despite some new faces in key positions. Defensively, the Yellowjackets also bring back seven starters and this is a unit that we have a lot of confidence in. The front seven has some serious dudes returning and Choctaw has become a program that can produce defensive backs at a high level and they are back at it again this year. They'll be new faces but get ready to learn those names and see them emerge as the next guys to come through this Choctaw DB pipeline. Like the last several years, Choctaw will test themselves against a very competitive non-district schedule. That should get them ready for a district where they will enter as the favorite but they have to go out and prove it. This is a team that is hungry to make it back to Edmond and raise a second gold ball in three years.   KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION   Da'Jon Green - Defensive Back (2025 All State 1st Team Selection) Landon Gatson - Quarterback (2025 All State Honorable Mention) Mayor Morgan - Running Back (2025 All State Honorable Mention)   PLAYERS TO WATCH    We mentioned it earlier in the preview how the offensive line would be the strength of the offense, at least early on in the season. 2027 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1831265' first='Aaron' last='Hale'] is one of the returning starters for this unit and is certainly in a position to be the leader of this group. He's a 2027 prospect that started picking up quite a bit of interest this offseason and that should only continue as he begins his senior season. Choctaw has also had a good run of offensive linemen during this stretch of success. Hale is the latest guy. He has good size, technique and he'll be a big part of this offensive line paving the way for Choctaw's growing group of skill players.     2029 standout [player_tooltip player_id='2124464' first='Akoree' last='Walker'] is one of the first 2029 prospects in the state that started to pick up D1 offers. Looking at some of his limited film from last season, you see an absolute playmaker and a guy who is going to help out the Yellowjackets in a variety of ways this season. He's long, quick and has a natural playmaking ability to his game. And with the Yellowjackets needing new guys to step up in the skill positions, Walker is going to be a prime candidate for a breakout season. There's a reason he was one of the first 2029 prospects to earn offers. The college coaches see the potential there and if it's fully realized, Walker could explode this fall.     2027 running back [player_tooltip player_id='2042560' first='Anthony' last='Keys'] is one of several new additions to the Choctaw roster that should provide an immediate impact for the Yellowjackets this fall. Keys comes over to Choctaw after being a dynamic playmaker for Millwood the last two seasons. It's an interesting situation as Keys could be the marquee back for the Choctaw offense, replacing a running back that has a very similar stature and running style. The Yellowjackets might not look any different in the running game. Keys is also no stranger to playing in big games against tough moments. He has started the last two seasons and played meaningful minutes during his freshman season.    (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     All signs point to 2028 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1748512' first='Cal' last='Whitnah'] being the next QB1 of the Yellowjackets this season. He steps into a role where Choctaw has had a lot of consistency and overall playmaking ability in the last few years. Whitnah is also new to the Choctaw program after starting his high school career at Harrah. He was incredibly productive as a passer and as a runner last season with the Panthers. Shortly after the season, Whitnah moved over to Choctaw and has been with the Yellowjackets throughout the offseason. He's an athletic and tough quarterback that is going to be able to do some really good things in this Choctaw offense.     We've written about 2027 standout [player_tooltip player_id='1176238' first='Israel' last='Hammons'] quite a bit over the last two years. And the one consistent theme that keeps coming up is how versatile Hammons is on the football field. It simply doesn't matter where the Yellowjackets put him, he finds a way to have a significant impact for his team. Offense or defense, Hammons finds a way to be one of the best football players on the field. Now, all signs point to him being a defensive guy moving forward. And that's where he was at his best last season, earning 1st Team All State honors. There's no doubt that Hammons is going to be one of the more experienced and versatile athletes in 6A-2 this season.    (2025 All State 1st Team Selection)     We firmly believe that defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1198491' first='Jayce' last='Watson'] is one of the more underrated players in Oklahoma's 2027 class. All you need to do is throw on the film or look at the production he had last year as a defensive tackle. Watson is such a disruptor in the middle of this Choctaw defensive line and he was a big match-up problem for opposing offensive lines last season. There's no reason to think that he won't elevate his game this season and become an even bigger problem. And with Choctaw getting better and better in the front seven, we imagine that Watson is going to be freed up to cause more havoc along the line of scrimmage.     2028 standout [player_tooltip player_id='1837487' first='Kentrell' last='Gaddis'] II seems to be primed for a major breakout season this season. You started to see flashes of it last season with what Gaddis could do but it was more on the defensive side of the ball. Gaddis could be used in all three phases this season. While he looks to be at his best as a defensive back prospect, don't be surprised if the Yellowjackets use him on offense as a running back or a wide receiver. He can also help them in the return game. It goes without saying, Gaddis has the ability to break a game wide open anytime he touches the ball. College coaches have taken notice and he's being recruited by one of the state's best in the 2028 class.     2028 athlete [player_tooltip player_id='1599209' first='Knoxtyn' last='Rallo'] is another addition to the Choctaw roster after he emerged as a star for Piedmont in each of the last two seasons. Rallo is a dynamic playmaker that is in a similar mode to Gaddis. Rallo was an impact player for Piedmont in all three phases of the game. Offensively, he gives the Yellowjackets more speed in a variety of positions. Defensively, he can move around and play a few different positions and then finally, he's a dynamic threat in the return game. Choctaw could end up having some of the best special teams moments in 2026 considering who they could put back there to return kicks. Rallo should be an instant impact player for the Yellowjackets.    (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     We mentioned how Choctaw had one of the best tight end prospects in the country. 2027 tight end and Notre Dame commit [player_tooltip player_id='1035103' first='Titus' last='Hawk'] is that dude and we're fired up to watch what he does this season. In the last two seasons, it seems like Hawk has played some of his best football on the biggest stages in the state championship game. Hawk committed earlier this offseason to play both baseball and football at Notre Dame. He's an outstanding baseball prospect but he's absolutely blown up as a true football prospect in the last 18 months. The bigger the stage, the better Hawk plays and the Notre Dame commit plans on playing on a few big stages this fall.    (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     2029 defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='2229969' first='Zaedan' last='Walker'] has the potential to be one of the bigger breakout stars this season. We mentioned how much we like Choctaw's front seven with Hammons and Watson. Now you add a young buck like Walker, coming off the edge with a lot of athleticism and pure power and you have an element that will be a nightmare for opposing offenses. Like a few other Choctaw prospects, Walker started to blow up in the spring and that has only continued this summer. Going back and looking at some of our notes from last year, Walker was flying under the radar. That simply isn't the case anymore as he prepares for his sophomore season. This will also be the first time these two teams have met on the football field since Class 6A was split into two divisions. The last time they met was 2013. There will be a lot of starpower on the field in this one.  Sept. 4th - Moore - In week one, we'll see the Yellowjackets face another 6A-1 opponent as the Moore Lions come to town. Similar to the Mustang match-up, this one is the first time these two teams have met on the gridiron since Class 6A was a 32-team class. 2011 was the last time these teams met and Moore won 27-9. Both programs look completely different now.  Sept. 11th - AT Union - The first of three straight road games for the Yellowjackets kick off here with a week two visit to Tulsa to face Union. Just like with Mustang and Moore, Choctaw hasn't played Union in over 15 years. The last time these two met on the gridiron was 2008 and 2009 and Union won both and went on to win state titles in both seasons.  Sept. 18th - AT Muskogee - In their final non-district game of the season, Choctaw heads east again, this time to Muskogee to face the Roughers. It'll be a rematch of Choctaw's 2024 state championship victory, although both teams look very different this time around. The Yellowjackets have won five straight in the series against the Roughers.  Sept. 25th - AT Norman - The third straight road game for Choctaw is the shortest and also the district opener for the Yellowjackets as they'll face Norman. The Tigers have dropped down to Class 6A-2 this season and now become a fierce district opponent. The Yellowjackets haven't played Norman since 2013 but now they are district rivals.  Oct. 2nd - Putnam City West - After three straight games on the road, Choctaw returns home for a week five clash against Putnam City West. The Yellowjackets and Patriots haven't met on the gridiron since 2021 with PC West being in the east side district over the last four years. Choctaw has won five straight in this series, including a 60-27 win in their last meeting in 2021. Oct. 9th - AT Piedmont - Choctaw goes back on the road to face Piedmont in a pivotal week six game towards the district standings. Both teams are going to enter this season with district title aspirations. These two teams have met twice in the last two seasons with Choctaw winning both. But the Wildcats have pushed the Yellowjackets in each meeting.  Oct. 15th - Putnam City North - It's the final home game in the regular season and it comes on a Fall Break Thursday night against Putnam City North. Choctaw took care of the Panthers last year with a 52-13 win and they've won four straight in this series. And in all four wins, the Yellowjackets have been absolutely dominant. They look to continue that this year.  Oct. 23rd - AT Putnam City - This week eight road game will certainly be one that's circled for the Yellowjackets as they go to Putnam City. Last year, they were upset when Putnam City blocked an extra point attempt and the Pirates stunned the Yellowjackets 28-27. Prior to that, Choctaw had won five games in a row in this series and this will have big playoff implications.  Nov. 5th - AT Lawton Eisenhower - The regular season comes to an end on a Thursday night in week ten with a visit to Lawton Eisenhower. These two teams have been district opponents in each of the last two years and Choctaw has been dominant in both. They won 72-19 last season and they also won 59-14 in 2024. The Yellowjackets haven't lost to the Eagles since 2011.   NOTABLE   Head coach Jake Corbin is going into his tenth season in charge of the Choctaw football program. And whenever you go to Choctaw, you see “G.O.L.D. Standard” all over the facilities. You can make a very strong argument that we're in the golden era of Choctaw football. The Yellowjackets have played for the state championship four times in the last six years, winning it all in 2024. New facilities are popping up all over the high school campus and the Yellowjackets have been one of the top contenders in 6A-2 over the last six years. In fact, in Corbin's first four seasons as Choctaw's head coach, the Yellowjackets went a combined 27-19. In the last five seasons as head ball coach, Choctaw has an eye-opening 47-14 record with a gold ball and two silver balls to their names. The Yellowjackets are one of the top programs in the state of Oklahoma and when you look back at the history of this program, they have never had a decade like they've experienced under Corbin. But with success comes expectations and pressure.
