KY's 2028 DB Prospects Flying Under the Radar

So far this offseason, we've already taken a look at the Class of <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/06/ballhawks-senior-dbs-riding-momentum-into-the-2026-season/">2027</a> and <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/06/sophomore-spotlight-2029-bluegrass-dbs-on-the-rise/">2029</a>'s defensive back units. Now, it's time to look at some rising juniors who have put some impressive film on tape last fall. These five players will all look to have a breakout year in their respective defenses:    A solid one-on-one defender, [player_tooltip player_id='988053' first='John' last='Jones'] provides blanket coverage for Paducah Tillman's secondary at the cornerback position. While he's most effective in man coverage, he's an excellent downhill defensive back and has demonstrated his ability to stuff a ball carrier at the line of scrimmage. Likewise, Jones often out-physicals his opposing receiver, stuffing them on the line of scrimmage and winning blocks during run plays. He's also light on his feet and can chase down ball carriers as the last line of defense.     [player_tooltip player_id='2118008' first='Max' last='Sturm'] is a ballhawk at the strong safety position. He has demonstrated his ability to read a quarterback's eyes, anticipate throws, and make plays on the ball. Sturm's speed helps him stick with receivers downfield, and he doesn't make it easy for a quarterback to throw around him. It's also worth noting that reports indicate he will receive a larger role in McCracken County's offense this season. Defensively, he appeared in 10 games and logged 56 tackles and an interception as a sophomore, and also contributed on special teams.     [player_tooltip player_id='2141942' first='Christopher' last='Dezern']'s effort on the gridiron stands out when evaluating his tape. Dezern is fast and can chase down a ball carrier who has broken free. He doesn't give up on plays, either, and has heavy hands that are liable to knock the ball free. He's quick to recognize plays and reacts appropriately. Dezern is effective in man coverage and is clean with his hands when contesting passes one-on-one in deep ball situations. At the line of scrimmage, he can smother a receiver and take him out of the play.     [player_tooltip player_id='1589520' first='Gavin' last='Jermaine Beecher'] is a downhill defensive back who knows his assignments and where he needs to be on the field. He takes his job seriously, serving as the last line of defense from the safety position, and is quick to react in pass coverage. Beecher can latch himself onto a receiver in stride deep down the field, and he can also break on the ball and meet the ball carrier to initiate contact.     A hard-hitting defensive back, [player_tooltip player_id='2140368' first='Tavares' last='Burgess'] is a run-stopper at the line of scrimmage. He can stand up a receiver on the line of scrimmage, drive them backward, and has proven his ability to knock the ball free when creating contact on quick throws. Burgess finished his sophomore season for Hopkinsville with 32 tackles, three pass breakups, and an interception. He's the Swiss army knife, serving as both a wide receiver and running back on offense.
