Continuing with our 'Sophomore Spotlight' series, let's dive into some underrated defensive backs from the 2029 class poised for a strong second year at the high school level. In case you missed it, we've already looked at some of the top offensive talents, up-and-coming running backs, as well as emerging LB/EDGE prospects in Kentucky. Now, let's take a look at some secondary talent across the Commonwealth worth mentioning before the new season gets underway. [player_tooltip player_id='1665544' first='Aiden' last='Zuniga'] is on his way to being a lockdown cornerback in the 2029 class. Zuniga is a downhill defender who has proven his ability to recognize plays and react quickly and appropriately. Has the ability to stick with a receiver in man coverage, especially on deep routes, and Zuniga isn't handsy in these one-on-one situations. Doesn't often stray from his assignment in zone coverage, but can break on the ball and lay a hit on a receiver if given the opportunity. [player_tooltip player_id='1648917' first='Jamaal' last='Haskins'] is the insurance policy for the W.E.B. DuBois defense. At safety, Haskins is the last line of defense and is consistent at executing his role. Can chase down defenders in the open field and provide touchdown-saving tackles. Knows his assignments and is a reliable defender in pass coverage. Has clean hands when guarding one-on-one, and isn't afraid of making contact with a receiver to knock the ball free. [player_tooltip player_id='1651416' first='Saurin' last='DeShields'] is a run-stopper at the safety position. A textbook tackler, DeShields wraps his defenders up and doesn't let them go. Has a good sense of sniffing out plays, finding the ball, and initiating contact. His size allows him to hit his opponent low, showcasing his power and driving ballcarriers backward at the point of contact. Has a high football IQ and doesn't give up on plays. Doubles as a dynamic running back for Madison Southern's offense. [player_tooltip player_id='1650308' first='Brady' last='Ratliff'] already has varsity size at cornerback despite his age. Uses his length to his advantage in man coverage. Ratliff can read a quarterback's eyes and feasts on poor decisions. He is deceptively strong and always a threat to make a play on a ball carrier. Often out-physicals his receiver, and can jam them on the line and throw off their route. Ratliff is also a sure tackler in the open field. [player_tooltip player_id='1648858' first='Gunner' last='Harrig'] is a multi-sport athlete who primarily plays cornerback for Henry County. Harrig can read a quarterback's eyes and has demonstrated his ability to make a play on the ball. Has the speed to keep in stride with opposing receivers. He's most effective in man coverage, providing a reliable presence in the Wildcats' secondary. Once he puts more film on tape, Harrig is a player to watch out for in the 2029 class.
