One of my favorite series of the year is the Deep Dives, where we at Prep Redzone North Carolina start going into counties or areas across the state of North Carolina, and ranking talent by specific positions in those areas. My colleague Will Helms has already done a great job in starting his rankings in the Raleigh area, and I will start in Mecklenburg County in the immediate area of Charlotte, then branch out from there.

We will miss some players here and there, and a lot of our evaluation is based on production, film, offers from college football programs, and the existing Prep Redzone North Carolina rankings. If you feel you should be included, be sure to let us know! This article will feature the top defensive linemen in Mecklenburg County, listed in ranking order. The Top 5 will get a detailed breakdown, then the other players will get a summarized analysis.

Griff made the #1 in my rankings here because I think he's the most complete player right now as far as being able to both defend the run and rush the passer consistently from his defensive line spot. It's a razor-thin margin when you get to high-level talent as we have in the Top 5 of this list here, and even going deeper. Charlotte is really blessed with talented defensive linemen! From a recruiting perspective, Griff has recently received offers from Stanford, Charlotte, Miami, Clemson, and Louisville within the last two months.

When you watch Jesiah on film, you see the speed off of the football, and the power when engaging with offensive linemen, and it's really impressive stuff. When you're as good as Jesiah is, you want to see consistent domination against the level of competition his team, Corvian, plays at, and you get that in abundance on film for sure. From a recruiting perspective, Jesiah has recently picked up offers from Maryland, Rutgers, Kansas State, Purdue, California, and Texas. A number of those schools do not routinely recruit the Carolinas, making that all the more impressive.

I thought Cory took some impressive steps this past season as a player and displayed some dominance against good competition. I think some people really wanted to see that, and in my mind, he's cemented as our #1 defensive lineman in 2028 because of that. Cory has a nice get-off at the snap, and now he's using his hands very well to tie into that get-off, to get into his pass rush moves and block shedding vs. the pass and the run, respectively. Recent offers for Cory have come from Missouri, Nebraska, and California.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - Nate is an impressive defensive tackle, but the best highlight I've ever seen of him was as an offensive lineman when he drove a defender 30 yards to the sideline on a running play. The strength and athleticism of Nate are very impressive, and like his teammate Jesiah, you see consistent dominance against his team's level of competition. From a recruiting perspective, Nate has received recent offers from Rutgers, Kansas State, and Texas.

Charles really worked hard on himself over the past couple of years, and he's shown exponential improvement as a player and prospect. I remember talking to him a couple of years ago, and he has the drive to be one of the best. Charles has received recent offers from Miami, Louisville, Boston College, and Charlotte. Looking at the film, the get-off is really impressive - Charles shoots a gap with impressive quickness for his size. Charles also plays with great power and sheds block attempts quickly, using his hands well.

Analysis

This is a strong group of players here, wow. Mobley made all conference in the toughest conference in the state, and he's got 6 Division 1 offers currently. Incredible depth of talent in Charlotte! [player_tooltip player_id='1687735' first='Antonio' last='Flowers'] has maybe the quickest get-off I've seen out of a defensive lineman in Charlotte since Curtis Neal several years ago. All Antonio needs is time, and he'll be a bigger national recruit than he is already. I think [player_tooltip player_id='2104426' first='Kayden' last='Smith'] is one of the more underrated players out here. His speed rush from his EDGE position is really impressive. Lewis from Myers Park and Falks from Rocky River are both players with really good size and a little under the radar. Falks, though, is starting to get some attention with an offer from East Carolina recently.

The last four on this list all have some positives around them. Tate is the only 2029 player I included, but he is already starting to get some recruiting attention. Grier from Ambassador Christian has a nice size and picked up an offer from Hampden-Sydney recently. Harris was an all-conference player for Rocky River last season, and has the size you like at 6'4 near 270 pounds. He's also an athlete who can play tight end offensively. Drayton is the size you like for a prototypical EDGE player to have at 6'6 and 230 pounds. This is a big senior season coming up for him.
