We're wrapping up our "elite 2027s" series ahead of next week's rankings update, and we're hitting the defensive backs. We've already covered the top players in the 2027 class at the quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, defensive line, edge, and linebacker positions. Now, we're breaking down some of the top defensive backs in an impressive 2027 class.

While we don't differentiate between corners and safeties within our rankings, we do within our evaluations. This class is highlighted at the top by three defensive backs in the top 10 who play three very different positions, and it is actually one of the deeper positions in the class. Here, we're focused on the top-end, though, with several potentially elite prospects.

If we ranked every pure corner to come out of the state of North Carolina since 2020, Hasan would be very close to the top of the list, perhaps second or third. He's an ideal cover corner, with length, speed, ball skills, and clean mechanics. He's a smooth mover in his backpedal and turn, and he drives on the ball well to make plays. It's no surprise that Notre Dame had to beat out a host of other top teams for his services.

A defensive back/linebacker tweener, Geathers is a positionless prospect in the best of ways. He can line up as a traditional box safety, flex out into the slot, or even line up as an off-ball linebacker. That allows Providence Day's entire defense to play with flexibility, as they can match personnel against two and three-receiver sets without subbing defensively. The NFL is learning the importance of that role with guys like Nick Emmanwori bursting on the scene, but very few guys have that versatile a skill set. Geathers is the exception.

I originally pegged Crumel as a corner because of his build, but he's also played some as a free safety, and I think he has the versatility to play both. He has excellent drive on the ball, and he's far more physical than his size would suggest. In all ways, he plays bigger than his frame suggests.

Bryant is one of the top pure safety prospects we've seen in a while, but he also flashed some man coverage skills in the slot this year. He had seven interceptions, and no two were alike. He picked off passes in man, zone, match, as a center fielder, and on tips and overthrows, showing high-level ball skills in the process. He's improved every season, especially in coverage, which bodes well for his future development.

Rankin is, above all else on the field, a pure, instinctual football player. The two-way athlete lives around the ball and has a knack for making a big play. He's built like a corner, but plays like a linebacker, as his pursuit angles from his safety position are excellent. With a bit more weight and some positive recognition, we think Rankin isn't just a future Power Four athlete, we think he's a potential game-changer at the college level.
