CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A Class 5A Group 2 game had Dowling Catholic traveling to Kingston Stadium Friday night for a matchup with Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The visitors recorded a 34-0 victory.

The only blemish on the Maroons' 2025 record is a one-point loss to rival Valley in Week 1. No opponent was closer than 21 points of them at the end of their other five games.

Here's a look at six student-athletes from Dowling that caught my attention on Friday:

I first saw Barrett during the last season's state semifinals when the freshman was starting at left tackle. That also was the last time I scouted him in person until an Oct. 3 contest at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. It's always great to get an fresh-eyed update, which is especially the case when it's our top-ranked sophomore in Iowa. Barrett has improved his mobility and ability to reach blocks better. He gets to his spots on time and excels in hitting his aiming points. Barrett also added strength, which he puts to good use in run blocking but also helps him complement active hands in pass protection. Some of the top college programs are pursuing the Dowling 10th-grader with good reason. He's already a force with plenty of room to go before hitting his considerably high ceiling.

I caught Nahas in action while scouting last season's state semifinals at the UNI-Dome. It was good to get another in-person look when Dowling took on Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Oct. 3. What jumped out most was Nahas' comfortability behind center. He appeared to be much more in control of the offense and commanding the huddle. Nahas did I nice job working through his progressions and getting the ball out on time. Several times, Nahas displayed excellent placement on deep balls and arm strength on quick throws. Nahas is a good athlete that moves well in the pocket. He can pick up yards with his legs or keep plays alive off of schedule. There are plenty of college programs that would benefit from his presence.

Northern Iowa grabbed a good one in gaining a commitment from Drexler. I felt that way after watching him during last year's state semifinals at the UNI-Dome and following after an in-person scout when the Maroons faced Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Sept. 27. Drexler combines an impressive range of skills that make him a difficult matchup as a pass catcher. The senior showed that against the Cougars, illustrating an ability to beat defenses deep with speed. In those situations and on underneath routes, his size can help win balls. Drexler also possesses quickness in space, which helps on short passes in making defenders miss. It will be interesting to see how he develops on the next level because the potential is there for big-time production.

Blount Jr. has been on the recruiting radar since impacting the varsity action as a freshman. He spent his first two seasons at Centennial before joining Dowling this year. When watching him in person during a game against Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Oct. 3, Blount Jr. confirmed his reputation as an athletic, active performer on the second level of the defense. He tied for the team lead with 6.0 tackles, including four for loss. Blount Jr. runs really well, sideline to sideline, covering a lot of ground. His agility and quickness allow him to stick in coverage. He gets downhill quickly in the run game as well. Blount Jr. does well in diagnosing what's coming before the snap and flows well to the football once the play is underway.

Hagan impressed me a lot when watching him operate on the offensive line as a sophomore in last year's state semifinals at the UNI-Dome. After more evaluation, we ranked him among our top players there. Now we have more data that expands our view. During an in-person scout when Dowling took on Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Oct. 3, Hagan was impacting the game as a defensive tackle. He showed an aptitude there, disrupting the opposition and helping his team control the trenches. Kennedy struggled to move the ball on the ground thanks in part to Hagan's ability absorbing blocks, keeping his linebacker clean, and disengaging from them when the play came his way. Colleges are taking notice of his work on defense, and the versatility he's already shown in high school should attract more attention.

Mitchell impressed me when I watched him during last year's state semifinals at the UNI-Dome. He was standing out as a freshman on the big stage operating in Iowa's largest classification. It was great getting another opportunity to scout Mitchell in person when the Maroons took on Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Oct. 3. He played a key role in helping them control the line of scrimmage from his left guard spot. Mitchell clearly improved his strength in the last year and also sharpened his game from a technical standpoint. He's improving as a run blocker with those developments and is advanced when it comes to pass protection. That has to do with the agility and athleticism Mitchell brings to the field.
