The returning Class 6A runner-up, Minnetonka - the state's #1 or #2 program, depending on who you ask - earned a massive win in a throwback Classic Lake matchup over longtime rival Eden Prairie, Tonka's first win over Eden Prairie since 2004! This win came with the Skippers still missing their starting QB Caden Gutzmner, with Iowa State 2026 RB commit [player_tooltip player_id='591990' first='Caleb' last='Francois'] stepping back into his familiar role at quarterback - where he led to Tonka to said defending runner-up title - to captain the Skippers to the W in Minnesota's Week 5. That takes some cool nerves and a calm demeanor, especially given the fact that Francois threw a pick-six in his first and only throw of the ball game, putting Eden Prairie out to an early 7-0 lead. Francois answered with aplomb, putting the team on his back - and his legs - with a 66-yard and 53-yard TD run to put the home team up 14-7. Additionally, he scored the tie-breaking, game-winning 20-yard scamper to solidify his Skippers win. 36 rushes against a stingy, physical Eden Prairie defense is no small task, but Francois is the real-deal, with a strong chance of continuing the RB1 streak in Ames. Hard-fought win for Tonka, who joins #1 Maple Grove in beating EP this year. Nothing like some Minnesota Big School football on a Friday night.

What turned out to be the game of the Minnesota's Week 5, Andover and Anoka, geographic rivals in the Metro North district, put up an astounding 123 points on Friday night in Anoka. The Tornadoes are undoubtedly the best winless team in Minnesota, and they dropped a heartbreaker in Minnesota's Week 5, going into halftime up 42-21 and leading 61-49 with 8:37 left in the 4th after a TD pass from 2027 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1120517' first='Blake' last='Sieben'] to 2027 WR [player_tooltip player_id='1581396' first='Trey' last='Schmalz']. However, 2025 is Joe Mapson's year, and the Andover senior QB is once again proving himself to be one of the most consistent explosive playmakers in 6A football this year, putting up a massive individual stat-line and completing the comeback with a 14-yard TD whose six points was enough to give the Huskies a one-point win. Thanks to Mapson's leadership, Andover scored two TDs in the final 5 minutes and 29 seconds, showing as much grit as they did clock management understanding and hustle. Boy do we wish we were at this one last Friday!

The upset of Minnesota's Week 5, Spring Lake Park is looking and playing like a top contender in a chaotic Class 5A bracket, especially after their takedown of a perennial Class 5A lean & mean contender Robbinsdale Armstrong 35-14. With this 5A showdown tightly contested early in the ball game, Welch set the tone by taking the opening kickoff return 79 yards to Armstrong's 21-yard-line before getting sniped and falling to the turf before finding paydirt. However, late in the first half, after Armstrong's TD pass from 2026 stock-rising seniors Gabe Hall to [player_tooltip player_id='1606273' first='Farelle' last='Deline'] to bring the score to a 14-7 line, Welch took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a TD, shutting down any hopes of an Armstrong comeback and solidifying himself as one of the best returners in Minnesota.
Lil 651 Class 5A overtime action to get the heart pumping on a Friday night! The Minutemen and the KnightHawks battled for each side's first win of the 2025 season, with St. Paul Central - formerly the top dog in the Minneapolis and St. Paul city conferences - coming out on top thanks to junior QB/ATH Charlie Doerr, who was returning after a two-week injury hiatus. The Hero of both the 4th quarter and OT, Doerr scored the game-tying TD with three minutes left in the 4th, then was aided by his Minutemen defense, who stopped the KnightHawks opening OT possession, after which Doerr found paydirt once again, giving Central their first win of the season. For me personally, Central was the Alpha Dog of the vaunted Twin Cities championship when I was growing up, s/o Elijah Campbell, so to see them fighting for a W this late in the season is hard to get used to. However, football in the Twin Cities are in rough shape right now, so we have to highlight these Ws as they come. According to the StarTribune, Minutemen head coach Scott Howell, DTs Willie Harris (2027, 6', 220) and Raheim Ruddock (2027) had strong games as well.
Battle of 4A Top 5s went down in Week 5 in Zimmerman, with Orono completing one of the better comebacks of the 2025 season, rallying from a 21-6 deficit at halftime and a 21-14 hole at the start of the 4th quarter to hold the Thunder to two final scoreless quarters and finish out the ball game with a nine-point victory. It was a high-scoring affair all four quarters, but the Beacons led after every quarter concluded thanks to 313 team rushing yards in a battle of run vs. pass. Down 28-20 late in the 4th, Breck mustered up a near hair-raising comeback after Kuhn found the very under-the-radar three-phase stud [player_tooltip player_id='1602736' first='CJ' last='Roberts'] on a 12-yard pitch & catch, but the 2pt conversion attempt from John Henry Berntsen to Roberts with 30 seconds left fell unsucessful, and the Beacons knocked off an undefeated private school opponent to really build some momentum going into the back half of the regular season.

Massive, massive, result here in the Class AAA ranks as Albert Lea takes down perennial 3A contender Fairmont in thrilling fashion on Friday night at the Albert Lea Hammer Complex. The Albert Lea Tigers may be the team of 2025 - at least so far - as they were off to their first 4-0 start since 1989 yet bested the feat and advanced to 5-0 against one of Class 3A's best teams year to year. The '89 Tigers also went 5-0 back in the day, but this is especially noteworthy given the fact that the Tigers are 3-36 in the past five seasons, which included a drop from 4A to 3A, and have also weathered the loss of their senior QB1 [player_tooltip player_id='1648479' first='Teaghen' last='Tolbers'], who was back in Week 5 against Fairmont in front of the home crowd. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1288346' first='Brecken' last='Wacholz'] has done a great job of embracing the "next man up" mentality, throwing for five TDs and rushing for three more in Tolbers' absence. Down 24-22 early in the 4th quarter, the two sides traded possessions before Tolbers struck gold with a 3-yard push into the endzone with 2:49 left in the ball game, after which the Tigers defense held strong.
Slobberknocker of a 9Man matchup here, with Spring Grove pulling off the upset against then #2 ranked Kingsland to notch themselves to a 4-1 record with some big wins under their belt, none bigger than this recent W over the Knights. Kingsland scored early with a 79-yard TD scamper from UMD commit [player_tooltip player_id='402074' first='Kaaleem' last='Reiland'] in the first quarter, and Spring Grove didn't score until the 4th, putting two scores together with the final coming with only 50 seconds remaining in the ball game! Kingsland sounds beat up, but this is a good Spring Grove squad with some real momentum going now. 9Man is always fun, and this year is no exception. Reynolds is a real sleeper by the way, with the size and dynamic athleticism that can really tear up the 9Man ranks and eventually a DIII or DII conference. Get at him!

An absolute thriller out of Class AAA, Litchfield and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted did battle in the 320 with one of the best finishes you'll ever see on the gridiron. This game had it all. Stat-stuffing individual efforts, dynamic playmakers, eye-popping personal plays, and a kickoff return for a TD with only 2:07 left in the ball game that turned out to be the game-winner. I am pumped to introduce our PRZMN readers to Jaxon Ewert, a 2027 tank of an offensive weapon who iced his Lakers victory in about as memorable of a fashion as possible. Sitting at 18-14 at half, the team's traded touchdowns throughout the rest of the ball game, ultimately setting up a 28-25 late 4th quarter scoreline after stud 2027 Litchfield prospect [player_tooltip player_id='1633392' first='Anthony' last='Taylor'] found pay dirt with 2:13 left in the contest. Things were looking optimistic for the Dragons, but Ewert quickly stifled the excitement, scurrying 91-yards to glory for a finish that no one in Litchfield's stadium last Friday night will soon forget. Additionally, shoutout to Alexander Medina-Lizarraga, a walking splash play and one of the 2025 season's best individual stat-monsters so far. He had another massive showing for Litchfield on Friday night, but it sadly wasn't enough. Lots of fun players in this one!

The Moore to Moore connection struck gold in Roseville last Friday night! One of the more dynamic and explosive pairs of brothers we've seen in Minnesota, the star hoopers and gridiron playmakers teamed up for the late, go-ahead, game-winning pitch & catch late in the 4th quarter to crawl out of a 14-10 hole and earn a hard-fought 6A victory over a fellow first ring suburb. The elder Moore - Jayden - is the state's top uncommitted athlete in both football and basketball, as well as one of the best multi-sporters in the entire nation, used that top-tier athleticism to come through for the game's biggest play. However, his younger brother Tre, a sophomore, had himself one of the better football games of his career. Enjoy it while we got it, folks!

I can't get enough of this North/NW suburb rivalry and competition between the 6A likes of Andover, Blaine, Anoka, Osseo, Centennial, and even Maple Grove. These teams beat the crap out of each other during the 6A regular season and it always seems like the scorelines are tight, and if you need evidence, check out Week 5's 28-24 final from Champlin Park's showdown with Blaine. Tied 14-14 at half, this one remained tightly-contested until the very end, as Champlin Park - then down 24-21 - used a [player_tooltip player_id='1633909' first='Miles' last='Felton'] toss to Landen Olsen-Gray (2026, 6'1, 175) with 1:17 left in the ball game to put the Bengals away for good. Felton is a dynamic and physical presence on the ball field for the Rebels, and 6A squads have been struggling to manage the massive junior in 2025. Additionally, I grow more and more fond of Rebels' senior 6'3, 220 lb. TE Isaac Axness, a big-time in-season stock riser who had yet another good game catching the rock, posting 8 receptions for 110 yards.
