Moving up to the Class 3A level in the high school football landscape across Iowa, we take a look at what went down in week 1 in one of the most competitive conferences in the state. However, despite the teams in this conference being closely leveled in terms of talent and competition, there were not a lot of close-scoring games in this first game, albeit a lot of familiar names among the top of the totem pole were able to start off strong once again. We recap what went down in Class 3A Iowa as they kicked off the 2025 season!

Van Meter vs. Des Moines Christian: 29-21

Arguably the biggest upset in Iowa this week, Des Moines Christian finally ended their losing streak against the powerhouse Van Meter with a historic win on Friday night. Down 21-16 heading into the 4th quarter, the Lions scored 13 unanswered points to earn the win, with the Lions churning out an impressive 390 total yards from offense, with 253 yards coming on the ground. The stunner may represent a change in the landscape for the Lions going forward, that they are a team that will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Top Performer: Max Town (SR) - Leading the way in the upset, Town started his senior campaign 11 of 16 for 137 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries and 2 touchdowns in the win.

Forest City vs. Clear Lake: 69-0

With all the talent that Clear Lake has, if this game was any indication, Clear Lake could be on pace to just completely throttle their opponents this season. By far the biggest blowout of the week in the conference, it seemed that the Lions were scoring every single time that they got the ball, and they never punted the ball to Forest City once in the game. The Lions have set the standard, and it will be exciting to see how they continue to build off such a monstrous performance to start the year.

Top Performer: Jaxon McIntire (JR) - McIntire had a near perfect game on Friday night, finishing 9 of 10 for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns, re-establishing the groove that he found during his sophomore season.

Sioux Center vs. Unity Christian: 28-14

After winning 1 game across the entire 2024 season, the Warriors' came out of the gate strong this year, matching their win total already with a promising win over Unity Christian. After a quiet first half with the game tied at 7, the Warriors emerged with 2 3rd quarter touchdowns that gave them the leverage they needed to hold on to this game. It's interesting to note that their 28 points this game were more than they scored in any other game last season, which may indicate a bright year ahead as the Warriors look to regain their footing in this conference.

Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='1848693' first='Ezra' last='Hibma'] (JR) - Already showing a positive step forward after getting his feet wet last season, Hibma finished 11 of 15 for 145 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a pick, while rushing for 27 yards and a rushing TD.
